FRIDAY’S BIG STORIES

Fergie’s doing well…

There really isn’t anything more to say here. Get, and stay well old boy…

Shaw talks body image, Mourinho, life

It’s been a weird few years for Luke Shaw. Injuries haven’t helped, but the Manchester United left-back has been forced to endure jibes about his weight – jibes which, to a point were justified because he did look heavier than many footballers, and it did seem to affect his form.
This summer he’s seemingly taken steps to combat that, doing plenty of pre-pre-season training in Dubai, trying to get as fit as possible. He spoke to journalists in America on United’s tour there, about his body shape, life and everything.
On his shape:
People think because of the way I’m naturally built I’m bigger than I am. People can say I’m fat but I know my own body. Yeah, of course I always look big because I’m bigger built. You could say a Wayne Rooney type of body. But of course I worked hard and not just for them [the critics], I wanted to for myself, get in the best shape and that wasn’t my best shape.
On fitness:
I guess you’ve just got to take it because there is always going to be negative criticism and positive but I think both of them can make you stronger. And I think I’ve been unlucky because I’ve had a few ups and downs with different managers, but I would say I’ve never been out of shape. I’ve just, I don’t know, sometimes people don’t think I’m fitter than I am but that’s all in the past. And, honestly, I feel really good and I’m raring to go.
On being in the final year of his contract:
You don’t really want to be in this situation but I am and I know I have got the quality and the work especially now to become a Manchester United player. Because in my moment now it would be easy to give up in the last year or so, especially the last year I’ve had where many things happened on and off the pitch and all that, it was easy for me to quit and say: ‘I want to go.’ But I believe in myself and I believe in my qualities that I’ve got what it takes to be a Manchester United player and that’s why I’m not giving up.
On getting a text from Jose Mourinho:
I was in Dubai with my girlfriend. It was funny. I was just on my phone flicking through stuff. I got the text and I accidentally clicked on it straightaway. He’s probably thinking, ‘Jesus Christ!’ But that wasn’t the case. I said to my girlfriend, ‘F—, I’ve just opened it and I must look so weird now.’ It was fine. I left it a little bit to reply because I didn’t want to look too eager.

Burnley start the meaningful season in…style?

Presumably we all watched the Europa League qualifier between Burnley and Aberdeen last night, right? Right? Good. Then there’s no need to discuss exactly what happened because we all definitely know…
The final score was 1-1, Sam Vokes popping up to score a late equaliser for Burnley and save them a draw, that away goal one that will probably come in useful when they play the second leg at Turf Moor next week.

The bad news for Sean Dyche’s boys is that England World Cup hero Nick Pope suffered a shoulder injury that could prove problematic for the start of the season.
“He’s gone to hospital. At this stage it looks more serious than not serious,” said Dyche, cryptically.
It’s good to have competitive football back though, isn’t it? Or is it? Maybe it’s the heat, but at the moment we really can’t be bothered…

IN OTHER NEWS

Uh oh. Whether he was making a funny or not, we’d advice Dougie Howser here to stay off his phone for a couple of days.

HEROES AND ZEROS

Hero: Dejan Lovren

Hats off to Dejan Lovren, who upon seeing a post on Instagram laying into Loris Karius – or, as he’s otherwise known, his mate – replied with some gusto. You are full of s***, replied Lovren. Shame on you how you treat our player! And also the name Liverpool fan page.
You’d like to think that we’d all stick up for a pal like that. Nice one, Dejan.

Zero: Reinhard Grindel

Mesut Özil wird nicht mehr für Deutschland auflaufen

Reinhard Grindel, the head of the German FA finally emerged from whatever cave he was hiding in to say something about the Mesut Ozil affair and his role in it, and, well…he might as well have not said anything.
Grindel got out the tiny violines by saying he wouldn’t “pretend that this personal criticism hasn’t affected me, but I feel even more sorry for my colleagues, the many volunteers at grassroots level and the staff at the DFB, who have been linked with racism.” Then he turned into David Brent by clarifying that he is not a fan of racism, before saying…well, that’s pretty much it.
No apology to Ozil, no real statement of any substance at all, nothing resolved. Try again, Reinhard.

HAT TIP

Hey! Over here! Come take a look at this! Helloooooooooo! Attracting attention away from Cristiano Ronaldo isn’t easy in Italy at the moment. A full fortnight after “the signing of the century,” the consternation and incredulity endures. It is dominating the news cycle in Italian sport. Every day there are articles about Ronaldo having the body of a 20-year-old, his frankly ridiculous goal average, the fact he makes more money than all but seven Serie A clubs, and where Cristiano Jr. might play football in Turin.
Over on ESPN, James Horncastle looks at the trouble with trying to get anyone to to pay attention to things that don’t involve Cristiano Ronaldo.

RETRO CORNER

On this day in 1992, Blackburn Rovers spent the huge, incredible, unthinkable sum of £3.6million on Alan Shearer. Here are a few of his goals.
