Charlie Austin's second-half strike earned Southampton a 1-1 draw in their South Coast Premier League derby at Bournemouth.
The striker finished smartly from substitute Nathan Redmond's low cross just after the hour mark, earning the visitors a share of the spoils after Ryan Fraser broke the deadlock late in the first half.
Southampton dominated the second period but as so often this season were let down by their final ball and wayward finishing, as Austin missed a headed chance to take the points nine minutes from time as Redmond once again sent in an excellent cross with which he failed to connect.
The hosts might still have taken the three points right at the last, when Nathan Ake headed over Jordon Ibe's injury-time corner, but ultimately they were rewarded for an enterprising opening period, and after a difficult start to the season have now lost just one of their last five in the league. Southampton climb a point to 11th but now have only one win in seven.

TALKING POINT

Should Bournemouth have had a penalty? Referee Jon Moss gave only a yellow card to Adam Smith after he fell over the extended leg of Sofiane Boufal, but on first glance it did seem to be a foul and the spot kick was a possibility. Bournemouth may be feeling very aggrieved that they did not have the chance to capitalise on their first-half superiority.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Ryan Fraser (Bournemouth). Always enterprising and hard-working, involved in most of the hosts' attacks.

PLAYER RATINGS

Bournemouth: Begovic 7, A Smith 8, Francis 7, Ake 7, Daniels 7, Stanislas 7, L Cook 7, Surman 7, Fraser 8, King 8, Defoe 7. Subs: Boruc, S Cook, Gosling, Ibe 7, Pugh, Afobe 5, Wilson 7.
Southampton: Forster 7, Pied 7, van Dijk 7, Hoedt 7, Bertrand 7, Davis 7, Romeu 7, Ward-Prowse 6, Tadić 7, Boufal 5, Austin 7. Subs: McCarthy, Yoshida, Targett, Lemina 6, Hojbjerg, Redmond 8, Gabbiadini 6.

KEY MOMENTS

12' CLOSE! Excellent leap from van Dijk, running in from the back post to head wide.
20' SAVE! Great goalkeeping from Forster - Smith's shot is deflected by Defoe, and the keeper is aware and alert.
30' DRAMA! Bournemouth think they should have a penalty, but Jon Moss has given the decision the other way, and booked Smith, presumably for falling over Boufal's outstretched leg. That looks a bad decision to me.
42' GOAL! Hoedt takes too much time, slips over, and King seizes upon the opportunity, eventually playing in Fraser, who slides the ball into the back of the net, nicely under the keeper. A nicely worked goal.
61' GOAL! Equaliser from Charlie Austin, who has far too much space in the box and turns that home cutely.
81' CLOSE! So close for Austin as well, coming in at the near post to meet a great ball from Redmond, and he can't get his head on that properly.
