Marcos Alonso has been charged with violent conduct over his tackle on Shane Long in Chelsea's 3-2 win at Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday.

Southampton manager Mark Hughes had called for the full back to face retrospective punishment for his challenge after Alonso avoided any action after his studs-up tackle on the Ireland forward at St Mary’s Stadium.

The Spanish player appeared to rake his studs down the back of Long's calf during a bad-tempered match, where the Blues hit three goals in eight minutes to collect the three points.

Alonso could miss Chelsea’s FA Cup semi-final rematch with Southampton at Wembley on Sunday if the Football Association decided to uphold the charge.

He must respond by 6pm on Wednesday, but faces a three-match ban that would see him miss matches with Burnley on Thursday, the Saints on Sunday and Swansea a week on Saturday.
