Salah, 25, joined Liverpool from Roma over the summer and his signing was questioned by some given his poor form whilst at Chelsea.
However the Egyptian has silenced all of his critics with a truly historic season that has seen him lead Liverpool into the semi-finals of the Champions League.
He has scored 31 goals in the Premier League, nine in Europe and one more in the FA Cup.
Salah not only has the most goals of any Liverpool player in one season in the Premier League era, he has also recorded the most goals ever by a Red in their debut season.
At the award ceremony Jurgen Klopp told the forward by video link "Now please grab the trophy and come home. We play on Tuesday!”
“It's a big honour,” said Salah at the ceremony.
I've worked hard and I'm very happy to win it.
When asked what it meant to become the first Egyptian to win the award, he said: “Hopefully I'm not the last one! I'm very proud to win and I've worked very hard.”
Salah beat out competition from Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne, with the pair reported to be in close competition for the award.
Salah is the first Liverpool player to win the award since Luis Suarez in the 2013/14 season.
Spurs forward Harry Kane finished third.
