Luis Enrique next for Arsenal?

Arsene Wenger has given some endorsement to his former midfield captain Patrick Vieira, and coach of New York City FC, as the next manager of Arsenal. However, negotiations are well advanced between Arsenal and Luis Enrique - so advanced that Wenger was essentially asked to resign unless he wanted to be sacked to make way for the Spaniard. The 47-year-old's arrival will also make the club favourite to sign Lionel Messi should he ever decide to leave Barcelona.

Paper Round's view: Barcelona will almost certainly now never let Lionel Messi go, given the enormous sums they handed over for his new deal, and Arsenal are unlikely to ever be able to afford the transfer fee and Messi's wage demands. The most important thing is that they do not make a mistake with the replacement. Enrique did well at Roma, but it's hard to judge someone's achievements at Barcelona given the resources at their disposal. Arsenal are a club that need an overhaul, not a few tweaks.

Guardiola set for new deal

One manager who won't be leaving his club in the near future is Pep Guardiola. Guardiola had so far refused to negotiate a new deal with Manchester City, and has just 12 months left on his current deal. However, he has now hinted he is prepared to talk about an extension in the summer. While the club want to tie him down to a long deal, they are conscious of the fact that Guardiola has only spent more than three seasons at Barcelona.

Paper Round's view: A new deal would probably be a very quick way for Guardiola to guarantee himself a raise, perhaps close to £20m a year as a reward for his performance over the last two years. However, pressure will start to build on him if he continues to fail in the Champions League, as he has whenever he has had a team without Lionel Messi to rely upon. In City's favour is that there is no next obvious step for Guardiola to take in his career.

PSG suspicious of Neymar

Paris Saint-Germain manager Unai Emery has said he is unsure about whether Neymar will be ready to return to action for the French club this season, waiting for him to be prepared to go through fitness examinations after he broke his foot. However, the club are generally more suspicious that he is looking to leave the club after joining only last summer. He has consistently been linked with a return to Spain and a transfer to Real Madrid.

Paper Round's view: Neymar is an inscrutable figure. For all the rumours and speculation it is hard to work out what his desires are. The transfer to PSG came as a surprise, but that means few would be surprised that he would quit any team he plays for in the future. A move to Real would make some sense, at least: he would be able to return to Spain where he was happy enough in his personal life, and it would give him a better chance to win European trophies.

Real start Lewandowski campaign

According to reports, Robert Lewandowski has been telling teammates that he wants to join Real Madrid. This is all part of a process for Lewandowski to force his way out of the club, with Real players Cristiano Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos speaking to the player in order to convince him to leave. Bayern don't want to sell, but Real are prepared to offer him a huge sum, and will sacrifice Gareth Bale or Karim Benzema to fund the move for the Polish international.

Paper Round's view: Selling either Benzema or Bale would raise plenty of funds, and as they are similar ages to Lewandowski it would keep the age profile at the squad at a similar level, even if it didn't improve it. Lewandowski would offer a brilliant and technically adept target man, and is probably an upgrade on the slightly underwhelming Benzema. For all their focus on Benzema, the squad needs refreshing in defence, midfield and probably in goal, too.
