Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Mourinho said his players had not approached the game simply enough:
"We were deservedly punished. We were masters in complication, everything was complicated.
Players didn't want or couldn't play simple, everything was slow, one more flick, trick, turn. There was no fluidity. We did not deserve to lose, we gave them opportunity to win the match.
He explained this was the reason for Paul Pogba being replaced by Anthony Martial before the hour mark:
"Paul had a yellow card and Paul’s game was complicated like many others.”
Mourinho implied that United's players were distracted and complacent after coming back from 2-0 down to defeat champions City last week:
"I won eight titles and I am not on the moon because I won against Manchester City.
"I saw lots of people in the moon because we won against City. You could see the difference in the attitude to players compared to last week."
"We deserve to be punished, but the defeat was too heavy."
Mourinho did not use the defeat to lessen City's achievement, saying they won the league off their own backs, rather than because of United's failures against West Brom:
"I have won titles, I would not be happy if someone say won title if someone lose a match. City won the title because they won more points than everyone else, not tell City they won title because United did not win, it is not fair on them."
