In a video published on the club's Twitter feed captioned "A goodbye message from Ander Herrera", the Spain international said: "There is red in my heart - I knew it from the first time I played here, and in the moment that I started to wear it.
"A club with thousands of fans that respect and remember all the players who give everything. I felt special when I heard my name chanted, I felt proud when the fans decided I was part of this incredible history."
The 29-year-old, who has been with the club since 2019, continued: "Every time I represented this club in every game, in wins and losses even when I couldn't help from the grass I understood what this club means.
"I am going to remember each of the almost 200 matches that I have played with this jersey, because playing for the greatest club in England has been a true honour. Thanks for these five amazing years."
Herrera joined United from Athletic Bilbao and has helped the club win the FA Cup, EFL Cup and Europa League during his time with them.
With his contract expiring at the season's end, Herrera will leave the club on a free. According to reports he is expected to join Paris Saint-Germain.
Herrera may be one of many to leave Old Trafford after the Reds narrowly missed out on a top four finish this season. It has been widely rumoured that Antonio Valencia, Juan Mata and Romelu Lukaku will be among the casualties as Ole Gunnar Solsjaer hopes to bring the club back to previous winning ways.
