Battling West Ham held Chelsea to a stalemate as Maurizio Sarri's 100 per cent Premier League record was brought to an end.
The Italian was hoping to become the third manager to win his opening six Premier League games, emulating Carlo Ancelotti and Pep Guardiola. But for all of Chelsea's possession - and they had a lot of it - it was the hosts who looked more likely to break the deadlock. Two golden first-half opportunities fell to Michail Antonio, replacing the injured Marko Arnautovic, but he screwed a decent chance wide and was denied by Kepa Arrizabalaga from point-blank range a moment later.
Chelsea's play became more ragged as time wore on and it was evident the Blues' Thursday night Europa League adventures had taken their toll on Maurizio Sarri's side. The introduction of Alvaro Morata briefly sparked the visitors into life, but with only one goal to his name this season the Spaniard proved wasteful once again, striking straight at Lukasz Fabianski with a snap-shot from a matter of yards. Substitute Ross Barkley tried to make his mark on the game, and his shot from range was well saved by Fabianski, who enjoyed an impressive afternoon.
The Hammers' reliance on star striker Arnautovic was underlined when Andriy Yarmolenko missed the best chance of the game, the Ukrainian heading wide while unmarked at the back post with Kepa rooted to his spot.
And so Manuel Pellegrini is still waiting for his first win at the London Stadium. His West Ham side remain 17th with four points; Chelsea are still third with 16 points, but lose a little bit of ground to Liverpool, who they meet in league action next weekend.

TALKING POINT

Blues' Greek adventures take their toll: Chelsea made a fast and furious start but they quickly tired and it is no surprise, given how little time they had to prepare for the game. After a narrow 1-0 Europa League win on Thursday, their flight from Greece to the UK was delayed to the next day, giving them only 48 hours to get ready for this London derby. The situation prompted Sarri to call on the FA for assistance on fixture scheduling, and with two matches with Liverpool also coming up in a hectic week, it is no surprise the Italian is unhappy. Still West Ham deserve great credit for their resolute defensive display and how hard they worked off the ball - and they had the chances to win it.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Lukasz Fabianski (West Ham): The former Swansea goalkeeper has been a shrewd acquisition for the Hammers. Again, he was a calming influence to his defensive line with an assuring performance and then made a couple of great saves when called upon.

PLAYER RATINGS

West Ham: Fabianski 8, Balbuena 7, Zabaleta 6, Diop 7, Masuaku 7, Rice 7, Obiang 6, Noble 7, Yarmolenko 7, Anderson 7, Antonio 5. Subs: Snodgrass 6, Sanchez 5, Perez 5.
Chelsea: Arrizabalaga 6, Rudiger 7, Alonso 5, Luiz 6, Azpilicueta 6, Jorginho 8, Kante 7, Kovacic 6, Willian 5, Hazard 6, Giroud 4. Subs: Barkley 6, Cahill 5, Morata 5.

KEY MOMENTS

30' - CHANCE! West Ham have lacked any real quality in attack - until now. And it's Anderson who provides it, the Brazilian slipping a lovely through-pass into the feet of Antonio but he appears to panic and blasts his shot over from an acute angle inside the box.
31' - ANTONIO WITH ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY! Yarmolenko carries the ball forward before Antonio takes over, and his snap-shot from point-blank range is straight at Kepa who makes a decent reaction save.
67' - MORATA CHANCES! Hazard is released behind the West Ham defence by the vision of Willian but instead of shooting the Belgian opts to leave it for Morata who is beaten to the ball and the hosts scramble it clear. Chelsea recover possession and here they come again. Morata is through one-on-one with Fabianski but is denied by the home side's stop-stopper who makes a crucial block with his face!

77' - MISS! Dear me, Yarmolenko. This is the chance for West Ham, but it's gone begging. The Ukranian is perfectly positioned to head home Snodgrass' inch-perfect cross at the back post but, completely unmarked, he glances his header wide of the post.
90' - SAVE! Barkley's venomous effort is heading straight to the bottom corner until Fabianski gets across to palm it wide. Fantastic save.

KEY STATS

  • Chelsea midfielder Jorginho attempted 180 passes against West Ham – since 2003-04, this is the most by a player in a single Premier League match.
  • This was Chelsea’s 600th London derby match in the top-flight – only Arsenal (674) and Tottenham (609) have played in more.
