Goals from Salomon Rondon and Ayoze Perez gave Newcastle a comfortable 2-0 win over rock-bottom Huddersfield in the Premier League at St James' Park.
Miguel Almiron, Newcastle’s record signing, made his first start for the club and impressed, hitting the post after just 12 minutes having lobbed Jonas Lossl.
He was also on the receiving end of a poor Tommy Smith tackle soon after, which saw the Terriers go down to 10 men with 70 minutes still to play.
Newcastle had to wait until after half-time to break the deadlock but once they did, after Rondon fired home from close range, a second goal from Perez - assisted by Rondon - followed six minutes later.

Substitute Kenedy and Sean Longstaff both hit the woodwork in the closing stages as Newcastle eased to a victory that lifts them to 14th, four points above the relegation zone.

TALKING POINT

Almiron gives Newcastle extra spark. All eyes were on the Paraguayan and he didn’t disappoint, showing good movement, an eye for a pass and great speed. There was a buzz every time he got on the ball and he was unlucky not to mark his full debut with a goal. Creativity and drive on the ball is what Newcastle have been most lacking, and while there are bigger tests to come than a home game versus Huddersfield, this display was encouraging and suggests Almiron can make Newcastle a much better team to watch.

MAN OF THE MATCH

DeAndre Yedlin (Newcastle): With Huddersfield offering little in the way of attacking threat, the American was able to get forward at will and was central in both goals, feeding the ball into dangerous areas where it was asking to be finished. This game suited his attacking tendencies and he made the most of it.

KEY MOMENTS

12’ - OFF THE POST! So close for Newcastle - twice! New boy Almiron is set through on goal after a lovely counter-attack and looks to have made the dream start as he dinks the ball over Lossl, but it comes back off the post and Rondon then fires the rebound against the same post.
20’ - RED CARD! Smith vies for a 50-50 with Almiron and somewhat lunges into the tackle. He was off the ground and caught the Newcastle man and referee Kevin Friend rightly sends him on his way.
45+1’ - GREAT CHANCE! A terrific Longstaff cross finds Rondon, six yards from goal, but he can't direct his diving header on target.
46’ - GOAL! Newcastle 1-0 Huddersfield (Rondon). A raking cross-field ball picks out Yedlin. He swiftly plays it inside, where Perez and Hayden get in one anther's way, but the ball runs to Rondon and he fires home.
52’ - GOAL! Newcastle 2-0 Huddersfield (Perez). An overhit Almiron cross is headed back into the middle by Yedlin and, via Rondon, to Perez, who powers into the net on the turn.
72 - GREAT SAVE! A deep cross picks out Kenedy and he unleashes a ferocious outside-of-the-boot volley that Lossl somehow tips onto the bar.
76 - OFF THE BAR! Longtsaff rattles the crossbar with a curling effort from range - what a goal that would have been!
