Football news - Paper Round: Spurs want £310m for Real Madrid target Harry Kane

Real Madrid want Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane, but there is little chance they will be able to afford him. The Sun claim that Spurs will put a £310 million asking price on Kane in order to rejuvenate their front line following the exit of Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus. Real have struggled for goals with an underwhelming season from Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema.

Paper Round’s view: £310m is almost a third of a billion pounds, and would likely be enough to buy Newcastle United from Mike Ashley. While there will always be inflation in transfer fees, it does appear that spending so much money on a single player is too much of a risk. Given the problems with their stadium, such an offer from the Spanish club could well be too good to turn down.

Manchester United are considering a move for England international manager Gareth Southgate. The Telegraph believe that Mauricio Pochettino remains the favourite for the United job with the board, but they are concerned he will remain at Spurs for at least another season. Southgate is lined up as an alternative but there is no guarantee that he will walk away from the England job.

Paper Round’s view: Southgate has impressed with England, but it has only been over a short time frame. Giving him a job at United would be reckless, so can't be ruled out with Ed Woodward in charge at Old Trafford. This story could be a plant in order to dent any negotiations from Daniel Levy in pursuit of compensation.

Marouane Fellaini is wanted by Italian side AC Milan. They had been tracking the 31-year-old Belgian when he looked to be available on a free transfer, but will rekindle their interest now he is out of favour under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. However, there is competition for his signature, with FC Porto and Guangzhou Evergrande also in contention, reports the Mail.

Paper Round’s view: Solskjaer’s introduction at Manchester United has demonstrated just how poorly Fellaini is suited to quick, attacking play. With Fellaini’s wages weighing on any spending plans in future, it would be sensible for United to get a player towards the end of his career off their books in return for a transfer fee.

The Mirror bring news of another potential Manchester United exit. Right-back and captain Antonio Valencia is in negotiations with Inter Milan. The 33-year-old Ecuadorian has been told United will not extend his current deal, and he will be able to leave at the end of the season. Ashley Young may also be allowed to leave for nothing, while Juan Mata and Ander Herrera could stay on.

Paper Round’s view: Valencia has shown poor form for at least the last couple of seasons, and after falling out with Jose Mourinho it seems sensible that he moves on. United’s squad is in need of renewal, with too much deadwood kept on by Woodward as a string of managers failed to improve the squad with their own signings.
