A Mohamed Salah statue unveiled in Egypt has caused rampant ridicule on social media - and it really is pretty ridiculous.

The statue, which was shown at the World Youth Forum in the Red Sea resort city, immediately drew very unfavourable comparisons with the absurd bust of Cristiano Ronaldo at Madeira Airport.

Salah is depicted performing his trademark celebration, but that's about where the likeness ends.

Artist Abdel Allah said she was inspired by Salah’s gesture of “opening his arms to the fans” after scoring goals.

"I found it is distinguished and executable," she told the Egypt Independent.
