City have the derby bragging rights and they have the three points to take them back to the top of the Premier League table. They were the better team on the balance of play, but United made them work for the win. In the end, the gulf between the two sides was obvious even if United made it quite tight in the second half.

- End of 2nd Half
FULL TIME: Manchester City 3-1 Manchester United
- OffDavid SilvaManchester City
- OnPhil FodenManchester City
Silva comes off and receives a standing ovation. He will be replaced by Foden.
The move between Mata and Martial inside the penalty area breaks down and the home fans jeer! This game is over now and the City supporters are finally enjoying themselves.
Three minutes of stoppage time to be played at the end of the match.
No penalty! Sane was pretty clearly shoved off the ball by Smalling, but Taylor shakes his head. The foul might have happened outside the penalty area, but it was surely a foul.
It was Matic who was at fault for that City goal. The Serbian was the one who failed to step up, and when he did he lost Gundogan. The German had so much time and space.
- GoalIlkay GündoganManchester City
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Manchester City 3 (86 mins - Ilkay Gundogan) Manchester United 1. That's surely the end of the United comeback! City showed patience, Bernardo found Gundogan with a clipped pass into the box, the German showed composure and finished past De Gea. Game over. Three points secured.
Gundogan is playing in a pretty advanced position since coming off the bench for Aguero. Although for the most part it's Sterling who is playing through the middle as the furthest forward attacker.
Sanchez hasn't done much since coming off the bench for United. They need to see more from the Chilean. He has the ability to make something out of nothing as they chase an equaliser.
This is a decent spell for United at the moment. Martial believes that he should have been awarded a corner kick, but the throw in is given. City are pegged back for the time being.
Sane tried to walk it in! The German attempted to dribble his way through the entire Man Utd defence, but in the end there were simply too many bodies for him to get through.
City got away with one there. United were pressing high on the home side, forcing Silva into a dodgy pass back to his goalkeeper. Ederson got there just before it went out for a corner.
This has gotten scrappy, disjointed and exactly what a derby should be. United will be happy with that, City won't. Mourinho has 12 minutes left to mastermind another comeback.
- OffSergio AgüeroManchester City
- OnIlkay GündoganManchester City
Guardiola takes off his only out-and-out striker and replaces him with Gundogan, a midfielder.
Wild from Sane! Oh dear! Man City had a four-on-two situation there as they caught Man Utd on the break, but Sane showed no composure and blasts well over from 18 yards out.
- OffMarcus RashfordManchester United
- OnAlexis SánchezManchester United
United are going for this now. Sanchez has come on to replace Rashford, who had very little to work with today.
- OffAnder HerreraManchester United
- OnJuan MataManchester United
There's the change that we thought might happen, with Mata on for the tired Herrera.
City have responded well to losing that goal. They have regained control of the game, with United restricted to the odd foray forward on the counter attack. A third goal would kill them off.
Herrera looks weary. Man Utd look to be preparing a change, there is activity on their bench, so could it be the Spaniard that comes off? Will we see Mata for the final 20 minutes?
There is certainly a nervousness around the Etihad, but City are asserting themselves again by pinging the passes around. This is what they are best at. United sitting back again.
Fernandinho strikes it! Sane dribbles past two Man Utd players and pops it off to the Brazilian midfielder. He winds up the strike, which picks up a deflection, but De Gea saves.
There seems to be a tension around the Etihad Stadium now. The City fans have been here before, in April, when United fought back from 2-0 down. Surely it isn't happening again?
- OffRiyad MahrezManchester City
- OnLeroy SanéManchester City
Guardiola responds to that Man Utd goal by throwing on Sane for Mahrez.
All of a sudden there has been a shift in the momentum. United are competing again. I wouldn't say that they are on top, but they are at least pressing high and threatening.
Fernandinho should have been shown a yellow card twice now, and yet Taylor has let him away with it. The Brazilian is a master of the dark arts. He's so valuable to Man City.
Mourinho has made a habit of changing games from the bench in recent weeks and he might just have done it again here. Lukaku won the penalty and United have the momentum.
- Goal by penaltyAnthony MartialManchester United
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Manchester City 2 Manchester United 1 (58 mins - Anthony Martial pen). United have been given a way back into the game! Martal steps up to the 12-yard mark and sends Ederson the wrong way. Lukaku made an instant impact and Martial converted. We have a game on our hands again.
PENALTY KICK TO MANCHESTER UNITED! Ederson brings down Lukaku inside the box and Taylor points to the spot!
- OffJesse LingardManchester United
- OnRomelu LukakuManchester United
Mourinho makes his first change and it's Lingard who comes off to be replaced by Lukaku.
Sterling was through! That was a chance for City to put this game to bed, with Sterling clean through following a pass from Bernardo. But he takes too long and the opportunity disappears.
Man City have started this second half with renewed intensity and tempo. United had brought them down towards the end of the first half, but Guardiola has clearly had something to say.
Mourinho has sent Sanchez, Lukaku and Mata to go warm up down the touchline. United need something different, particularly in the centre of the pitch. They are being overrun.
So is there any way back for Man Utd from here? Remember, they were 2-0 down to Man City last season, but this feels different. The Premier League champions are well on top.
A fantastic goal from Aguero, but the defensive play from United left much to be desired. De Gea, Lingard and Lindelof all contributed to that goal from the Argentinean. Very poor.
- GoalSergio AgüeroManchester City
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Manchester City 2 (48 mins - Sergio Aguero) Manchester United 0. A two-goal lead for the Premier League champions! De Gea's kick out was poor, Aguero played a one-two with Mahrez on the edge of the box and from a tight angle he smashes a finish through the United keeper!
No changes made by either manager at the interval. Delph was sent to warm up by Guardiola, but Mendy remains on the pitch. Mourinho resisted throwing Mata on.
- 2nd Half
The second half is under way! Manchester City have a 1-0 lead over Manchester United in the derby.

- End of 1st Half
HALF TIME: Manchester City 1-0 Manchester United. Silva's goal is the difference between the two teams after 45 minutes. City deserve their lead, but it has been a strange game so far.
Side netting! Bernardo drives forward and threads a pass through to Silva, but his shot from a tight angle only finds the side netting. De Gea wasn't worried about that effort.
Handball shouts! The Man City supporters believe that they should have had a penalty, with two shouts of 'HANDBALL' in quick succession. But neither were handball, replays show.
- Yellow cardLuke ShawManchester United
Shaw is the first Man Utd player to enter the book, felling Mahrez on the right side of the City attack.
United look relatively dangerous whenever they come forward on the counter attack. They have players committed forward, but the final pass has been missing from their play.
City look most dangerous when the likes of Bernardo, Silva and Sterling run at the United defenders. Besides that, the away side look quite comfortable sitting back and absorbing.
Martial opportunity! Rashford's run splits Laporte and Stones, he cuts the pass back to Martial, who just for a moment looked to have space for the shot. But his effort is charged down.
Rashford has a point there. Man Utd had a chance to get forward on the break, but Rashford was left isolated when Lingard and Martial were making their way into the box for a cross.
This has become a strange game since the opening goal. City have the lead, but United are succeeding in forcing the hosts to slow down the pace of the contest. Quite slow, now.
Sterling shot is blocked! City up the pace and work the ball to the edge of the box, with Silva and Sterling playing a one-two. But the winger's shot is charged down and it dribbles through to De Gea.
- Yellow cardBernardo SilvaManchester City
Bernardo is the first player to be shown a yellow. He took down Rashford. A clear foul.
If you had to criticise Man City, it would be over the tempo of their play in the last 10 minutes or so. They aren't playing with the intensity of the opening 10 minutes. A bit ponderous.
Mourinho comes out to the touchline to give some encouragement to his players. United have lost their way again in these last few minutes. City in control and knocking the ball around.
Lapooooooooorte! That was ambitious from the Man City centre back. Space opened up for Laporte about 30 yards out from goal, but his shot was never really troubling De Gea.
This has been United's best spell of the game so far. They are enjoying some possession and have tested City's defensive resolve with a few dangerous crosses into the box.
United work a good position down the right side with Young getting a decent ball into the front post. But nobody in a red shirt was gambling and Ederson makes the easy save.
Was Fernandinho lucky there? Man Utd were on the counter attack, with Lingard brought down on the Brazilian. It was cynical, but no yellow card. Was that the right call? Was Fernandinho lucky?
Pocket picked! Herrera took way too long to make a pass and was dispossessed by Silva. He bursts into the box, but United just about get enough players around him to halt the run.
Fellaini is very good at what he does, but is this really the way to use the Belgian? He looks completely out of his depth against this Man City midfield. United struggling to zip the passes around.
One bright spark for Man Utd in these opening 20 minutes or so has been Rashford. He hasn't had any goalscoring opportunities yet, but the 22-year-old has looked sharp on the ball.
Now, City are slowing things down in the centre of the pitch. They're attempting to draw out United from their defensive shape because they know there's space in behind to exploit.
United are finding it so difficult to keep the ball in the centre of the pitch. This is where they miss Pogba. Fellaini and Matic are just being swarmed by City every time they get the ball.
The response from United since losing the opener has been a decent one. They are looking to keep the ball higher up the pitch. They are coming out of their shell... slightly.
Sterling on the counter! City won the bal high up the pitch and looked to break on United, but the move eventually broke down with Matic making the tackle on the edge of the box.
This is a little bit better from Man Utd. They have the ball in the opposition half and are probing with a number of corner kicks and set pieces. City are showing defensive strength, though.
Ederson punch! United had a chance to sling a freekick delivery into the Man City penalty area, but the Brazilian goalkeeper comes off his line to make the effective clearance.
Man Utd's defensive line is all over the place. City are finding it so easy to cut them open, almost at will. Mourinho's side surely need to embrace their attacking ability and threat.
This is a familiar feeling for Man Utd. They have made a habit of falling behind in games recently. They managed to fight back against Bournemouth last weekend and Juventus during the week. Can they do it here?
- GoalDavid SilvaManchester City
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Manchester City 1 (12 mins - David Silva) Manchester United 0. First blood to City! That goal had been coming! The Premier League champions have been on top from the start. Sterling's cross to the back post finds Bernardo, who cuts it back for Silva. The Spaniard shows composure to take a touch and fire home off De Gea.
United's pressing game is intense when they get into the City half, but the problem is that they aren't getting that high up the pitch very often. The hosts are dominant right now.
Silva, as he so often is, is the one pulling the strings for City in the midfield. United are struggling to get players around the Spaniard, who has split open the opposition with a couple passes already.
Sterling was in behind! Silva picks out the run of the England international down the left side. He gets inside Young, but Smalling comes across to make the block from Sterling.
Worrying signs for Man Utd in the early exchanges here. City have twice managed to cut them open. Had Aguero been a bit sharper he might have scored the opening goal already.
Chance for City! The hosts cut open United's defence for the second time in the opening five minutes, with Silva cutting it back for Aguero. He misses his shot and Fernandinho drags wide.
As Neville points out on Sky's broadcast, United are playing quite narrowly in attack. Lingard, Martial and Rashford are all chasing down the opposition when they have the ball.
The pre-match scenes...
United are going to look to play on the rapid counter attack this afternoon. At least, that's how it seems from the basis of their starting lineup with Martial, Lingard and Rashford in attack.
Early sighter! It's Man City who have the first sight of goal, with Bernardo drifting between the United defence and midfield. He hits it well, but the ball flashes wide of the post.
- 1st Half
The match is under way! It's Manchester City against Manchester United in the Premier League.
Okay, here we go. About to get started at the Etihad Stadium.
Sir Bobby Charlton and Mike Summerbee are about to lay a wreath out on the pitch to remember those who died in the First World War. Of course, today marks 100 years since Armistice Day.
There's a huge demonstration for Remembrance Sunday out on the pitch. Very poignant. A massive poppy adorns the centre circle. And there will be a ceremony. Both clubs will lay wreaths.
Not long until kick off at the Etihad Stadium now. This has the potential to be one of the games of the season. The two sets of players are out on the pitch. Great atmosphere.
Aguero didn't start in either derby game against Man Utd last season, but Guardiola has decided to place his faith in the Argentinean striker. He will be flanked by Mahrez and Sterling.
Firing! Manchester City have been in exceptional form of late. They have scored six goals in a game TWICE in the past week. Sensational. How can United possibly keep them out?
Revenge! Of course, the last time these two teams met United denied City the chance to wrap up the Premier League title against their old rivals, coming back from 2-0 down at half time to win 3-2. Will we get more of the same today?
Invincible! Of course, Man City come into the derby without suffering a single defeat in the Premier League so far this season. Three points would see them go back above Liverpool into top spot.
Full team news here...
No Pogba! There were rumours this morning that the French midfielder hadn't travelled with the rest of the Man Utd squad for the derby, and those rumours have been proven true. Pogba isn't in the team.
