Comfortable for City in the end, but they hard to work hard to find a way past a well-drilled Villa side who looked to counter when they infrequently had the ball. Villa will be fine for the rest of the season on this evidence but were blown away by City in the second half. City's only regret will be the red card for Fernandinho, and now sit second in the league - three points behind Liverpool.

Late mix up in the Vila defence between Heaton and Mings, Jesus collects the resulting ball out and tries to clip the flapping keeper and defender, only managing to find the top of the bar, and Vila eventually clear.

Stones blocks a shot from Trezeguet full in the stomach and there's a brief stoppage while Stones gets his breath back.

Red card for City! Fernandinho clatters into the back of a Villa player, but it's more clumsy than anything. The referee disagrees and shows Fernandinho a second yellow and he's off! Guardiola is perplexed and unamused.

Not much has happened bar the substitutions since City's third, it's all gone a bit flat. Trezeguet, however, tries one from distance from the left, which is picked out the top corner by Ederson.

Grealish, struggling and hobbling, comes off. El Ghazi on for Villa.

Gundogan is booked for City for a late challenge.

There's plenty of debate from the BT commentary team whose goal the second was for City. They think David Silva gets a touch on it, but it looked like it went clean through, just, from De Bruyne.

City also make their first change. Mendy comes off for Angelino. Then, immediately afterwards, Aguero and Foden also come on for City, for Sterling and De Bruyne.

Dean Smith, in his 50th game in charge for Villa, makes their first substitution. Keinan Davis replaces Wesley up front.

GOAL! Manchester City 3 Aston Villa 0! De Bruyne corner from the right, then flashed across goal from Fernandinho and it falls to Gundogan on the edge of the box. Gundogan acrobatically scissor kicks the ball through a crowded defence and into the net!

VAR check on Sterling, who was furthest forward of the City players, and possibly offside, to see if he gets a touch. After a lengthy check, the goal stands! 2-0 City!

David Silva plays a lovely ball through the Villa defence for Sterling, but Sterling can't find a way through from close range.

Trezeguet and McGinn both attempt to find Villa players in the box from the right. McGinn crosses for Wesley but the header is straight at Ederson.

Grealish is increasingly getting on the ball down Villa's left but City are containing him for now.

Great chance for City! Jesus is one-on-one with Heaton after a terrible clearance, middle of the goal, but the Villa keeper gets a hand to the shot and, somehow, Mings gets his body in the way scrambling back to put it over the bar.

Sterling and Mendy forcing the issue again down Villa's right. Mendy breaks through down the left into the box but his shot on goal is blocked.
