FT: Villa 0-2 Spurs. Goals from Vinicius and Kane (pen) move Spurs up to sixth and within three points of the top four. It was much-needed for Mourinho and Co after their Europa League collapse. Villa missed Grealish again and drop to 10th.
- Yellow cardMatt TargettAston Villa
Spurs have looked very comfortable since Kane's goal. Jose will want the clean sheet as they bid to ease this one out. Targett booked as Villa's frustration shows.
Four minutes added. It's going to be a win for Spurs and just what Jose needed.
- Yellow cardJohn McGinnAston Villa
As it stands, Spurs will move up to sixth - just three points off Chelsea in fourth. Villa will be seven points further back in 10th (with a game in hand). McGinn booked a few moments ago for dissent apparently.
Japhet Tanganga makes a fine, sliding block to deny Barkley after the midfielder took a cross from the left and looked all set to reduce the arrears.
- Yellow cardCarlos ViníciusTottenham Hotspur
- OffTanguy N'DombeleTottenham Hotspur
- OnMoussa SissokoTottenham Hotspur
SPURS CHANGE: Sissoko on for NDombele.
Højbjerg lets fly from distance but Martinez parries and Vinicius can't make anything of the rebound from a narrow angle.
- Yellow cardMatthew CashAston Villa
Cash booked for a cynical foul on Lucas he looked to surge through the middle on the counter attack.
Spurs are looking good for sixth spot right now. Villa haven't looked like they can get one back, never mind two. Still hope though.
Deja vu for Villa. They've dominated the start to a half and then come unstuck.
Just the 27 for Kane so far this term. Not bad!
- Goal by penaltyHarry KaneTottenham Hotspur
GOAL! Kane makes no mistake as he sends Martinez the wrong way with a clinical spot kick.
PENALTY TO SPURS! Cash slides in catches Kane close to the left byline. Naive defending by the Villa man.
- OffMorgan SansonAston Villa
- OnRoss BarkleyAston Villa
VILLA CHANGE: Sanson off, Barkley on.
- OffGiovani Lo CelsoTottenham Hotspur
- OnSteven BergwijnTottenham Hotspur
SPURS CHANGE: Bergwijn on for Lo Celso.
Villa have had so much of the ball in this second period but they are still struggling to hurt Spurs.
- Yellow cardGiovani Lo CelsoTottenham Hotspur
Lo Celso booked.
El Ghazi wastes little time in trying to change things. He lets fly from the far left but his sizzling shot arrows into the side netting.
- OffBertrand TraoréAston Villa
- OnAnwar El GhaziAston Villa
VILLA CHANGE: El Ghazi on for Traore.
Trezeguet sees a shot hacked away by Rodon after good play down the left from Sanson. Spurs struggle to completely clear and McGinn finally tests Lloris with a shot from outside the area.
- OffSergio ReguilónTottenham Hotspur
- OnBen DaviesTottenham Hotspur
SPURS CHANGE: Reguilon took a knock just after the interval and has struggled to run it off. He's going to be replaced by Davies.
With the likes of El Ghazi and Barkley on the bench, you would expect it won't be long until Smith makes a change. His team have still yet to test Lloris.
STAT: Villa haven't scored more than once in any of their past nine PL matches, notching just six goals in total.
Watkins meets Traore's hanging cross from the right, but the Villa No.11 nudged his marker in the back and a nervy moment for Spurs is ended by the referee's whistle for a foul.
CLOSE! Kane bends a 25-yard shot just past the far post after collecting a smart pass from Lucas on the left.
VIDEO: Spurs' opener.

KICK OFF! Spurs get us back up and running.
- End of 1st Half
HT: Villa 0-1 Spurs.
One minute added.
The TV cameras keep picking Grealish out as he watches from the stands. He really has been sorely missed by Villa.
Kane meets Lucas' left-wing corner but can't get enough purchase on the header to direct it on target. Spurs cause more problems from another set piece seconds later, but NDombele's floated effort drops just over the bar after Martinez had punched into his path.
Since the goal Villa have huffed and puffed without really providing enough quality in the final third to really test the Spurs rearguard.
Villa will rue that mistake from Martinez as he raced off his line to mop up. They will feel they have had the edge so far, but now find themselves playing catch up.
That was Carlos Vinicius' first PL goal.
- GoalCarlos ViníciusTottenham Hotspur
GOAL! Carlos Vinicius taps home after brilliant play from Lucas Moura, who seizes upon a clearance from the keeper, plays a one-two with Kane and lays it across for his fellow Brazilian to touch into an empty net.
So far this match is another good example of how much intensity and tempo a crowd helps to generate.
STAT: Spurs have been beaten in seven games in a row against teams currently in the top half of the table.
Targett makes a late dash to attack Traore's angled ball at the back post, but his hooked cross-shot doesn't drop for a Villa shirt.
Brave goalkeeping from Lloris to deny Trezeguet on the slide after Traore's miscued shot almost fell kindly for the hosts.
Roden hangs out an important leg to divert the ball to safety after Cash had motored to the right byline and looked to cut it back into the danger zone.
Sanchez is almost caught out by McGinn's clipped pass into the channel. The defender loses the flight of the ball but Trezeguet can't quite get there with Lloris alert in coming off his line to gather.
STAT: Villa have won only one of seven league matches without Jack Grealish since their 2019 promotion (D2, L4).
Spurs are turning the screw. Lucas twists and turns on the left side of the box but Cash sticks to his task and makes an important block.
A slick Spurs move sees Kane and Lucas combine to feed Reguilon. He fizzes a low, first-time ball into the middle but Konsa is well placed to slide it clear.
Kane looks to change that by trying to fizz a ball through for Vinicius, but can't find his strike partner. It'll be interesting to see how they link up in their first PL start together.
A very low key start to the proceedings. Both sides enjoying possession without posing much threat.
H2H: Villa have won just one of the past 19 meetings in all competitions with Spurs, drawing three times and losing 15.
- 1st Half
KICK OFF! Villa get us underway.
Eurosport expert, Paul Parker had his say on this encounter in his weekly 'Parker's Picks' feature. Do you agree with the former England international? "I don't get involved in how many goals Harry Kane scores. I look at Son possibly not playing, which is a massive load of energy lost in that team, and they need energy. Villa to win this game. Spurs blew a real opportunity against Arsenal. I think they will get beaten and more questions will be asked about Jose Mourinho. Prediction: Aston Villa 2-1 Tottenham.
STAT: Eleven of Villa's 12 league wins this season have been accompanied by a clean sheet.
MAGNIFICENT MARTINEZ: Emiliano Martinez could equal Brad Friedel's Premier League club record of 15 cleans sheets in a season.
DID YOU KNOW? Mourinho has only been defeated in two of the 14 matches he has overseen against Villa in all competitions, winning eight and drawing four.
John McGinn on Villa’s Euro hopes: “You’d be lying if you said you didn’t have ambitions of carrying on your journey and to go and play in Europe, to play in the Champions League.”
Dean Smith: “The result (Spurs losing in Zagreb) for us is probably the wrong thing because I can expect Jose Mourinho to get a backlash from his players and for them to come out fighting at Villa Park. We have to make sure that we concentrate on ourselves rather than Tottenham. It's a squad that is littered with very good players, none more so than Harry Kane. We have to be at our best to get anything out of this game.”
Mourinho: “The reason why we lost the game in Zagreb was because for 100 minutes or so, one team put absolutely everything on that pitch and another team only felt the pride and let’s say a motivation to fight when the result was already 3-0.”
OPINION: The relationship between Tottenham Hotspur and Jose Mourinho is broken, writes Tom Bennett. That much was clear on an historically poor night for Spurs in the Europa League.
A bit more on some of the visitors' absentees. Erik Lamela is suspended and Son Heung-Min is injured.
The big news for Villa is that Jack Grealish is still OUT. The Villans talisman is missing for a sixth game in a row as a result of his shin issue. That means it's just two changes for the home side following their draw with Newcastle. Matty Cash and Morgan Sanson come in.
