Full-time: Brighton & Hove Albion 1-3 Chelsea

90+4'

I guess a better keeper will help too.

90+4'

Chelsea have played ok since going 3-1 up, but it's hard not to see them struggling defensively, even when Thiago Silva and Ben Chilwell are available.

90+2'

Time elapses.

90+1'

There'll be four additional minutes.

90'

Kante plays a one-two off Werner, screeching onto the return, but Dunk does well to hook away the cross, winning a free-kick when Mount leaves one on him.

88'

Chelsea knock it about as Brighton chase it about.

87'

It's Martin Tyler's birthday today, and when Alan Smith raises it, he notes that it would've been Ray Wilkins' birthday.

86'

This is phutting and sputtering to a conlusion.

85'

Jorginho is replaced by Azpilicueta.

83'

Jorginho goes down, so the physios come on.

81'

Lamptey hacks Barkley down and is booked.

80'

Abraham replaces Havertz, who's had a quiet night.

79'

Jahanbaksh replaces Alzate and Gross replaces White, who hurt himself challenging Werner. Brighton will not play a back four.

78'

Lewis Dunk will be rueing the header he missed at 1-2. That's the difference here.

77'

Barkley's done well since coming on and he bursts through midfield then finds Werner, zooming into the box; White slides in to stick the ball behind.

76'

Nice from March, elegantly gliding by Jorginho before standing up a cross that's just too soft for Connolly.

75'

Lamptey still fancies it, burrowing down the right but running into Alonso.

72'

Chelsea knock it about.

70'

Chelsea might well score another coouple here; they're starting to gel and Brighton know the game is over.

68'
66'

GOAL! Brighton & Hovel Albion 1-3 Chelsea (Zouma) James swings the corner out and Zouma does well to check out, diverting the ball goalwards. But Ryan has his shot covered, until Webster extends a foot, deflecting the ball home. That'll be that.

66'

Chelsea are improving, and Havertz again finds James, whose cross is blocked behind.

64'

Better from Chelsea, Havertz sliding James down the line and Werner flicking the eventuating cross into the nearest defender's legs.

63'

Oh my days, lump in my throat hearing this.

61'

Barkley replaces the disappointing Loftus-Cheek.

61'

I bet second place is nowhere near.

59'

What a miss! Alzate caresses a love ball into the box, and Dunk is free at the far post! Anything on target and he's scored, but perhaps trying to be too precise, he flicks his header wide! Dearie me.

59'
58'

Can Brighton come again?

56'

WHAT A GOAL! Brighton & Hovel Albion 1-2 Chelsea (James) That's why Chelsea sold Tariq Lamptey! James moves across the pitch from centre to right, 25 yards out, and without much on, he decides to shoot ... wiping his foot across an absolute beauty that careers high into the net at the near post, swerving away from Ryan all the way. Oh yes!

54'

WHAT A GOAL! Brighton & Hove Albion 1-1 Chelsea (Trossard) Brighton probe, moving the ball from right to left then back across again - this is excellent stuff, I was in the middle of writing, then Lamptey laid back to Trossard, 22 yards out, and he pasted a fine low shot into the far corner. Kepa might've done better, but the shot was extremely early and extremely accurate. Brighton earned that.

52'

Lamptey robs Alonso - he's running all over him - but Kante is there to assist.

52'

Chelsea have barely been out of their own half since the break.

50'

Attackers surround Kepa, but Zouma powers the resultant corner clear.

49'

Brighton are feeling this, Lamptey taking a crossfielder from Webster, chucking lollipops at Alonso before bursting by on the inside and lamping a shot into Zouma's corporeality. He stays down for a little while.

48'

Nice from Alzate, turning to receive a throw and suddenly driving into the box. But his low, dangerous cross doesn't quite find any of his mates.

47'

March goes down the left, past Jamesd, and whams the ball across, straight at Connolly, who can't contort into the position it'd take to get a shot on target.

46'

Peep etc.

21:05

Brighton were the better team but handed Chelsea a penalty and missed the chances they made. For Chelsea, Timo Werner looked extremely sharp.

21:05

Half-time: Brighton & Hove Albion 0-1 Chelsea

45+4'

Jadon Sancho and Jude Bellingham have both scored for Dortmund tonight.

45+3'

Werner nails Webster on the outside, has a look, and from an acute angle goes for goal, his shot beaten away by Ryan at his near post, for a corner that comes to nothing.

45+2'

Good cross stood up by Lamptey, but James eases Maupay out of it.

45+1'

There'll be four added minutes.

45'

Connolly replaces Lallana. I imagine he'll go up front with Maupay and Trossard will drop into the hole.

44''

Oh dear, that didn't take long. Lallana is down, rolling his socks to reveal an extremely strapped left shin. On the touchline, Connolly prepares himself.

42'

Another counter for Chelsea, Loftus-Cheek taking the ball off Werner, who streaks past him awaiting a return. But yerman hangs on too long and can't find the pass when he needs it at the last moment.

41'

I guess I should be used to it, but this game is curiously slow and insubstantial.

39'

Chelsea could use a winger. They're not creating much out wide.

38'

Havertz cleverly rides a challenge from Bissouma and feeds James, but his cross is aimless.

36'

Nice from Brighton, Alzate into Lallana who plays Maupay in! But his second touch is into traffic and he can't barge past enough challenges to force a shooting lane.

36'
35'

Alzate, in search of redemption, picks up a loose ball and drives into the shooting angle, leathering a low one that Kepa dives to shove away.

34'

Chelsea have created so little; Graham Potter must be fuming that him team are behind.

33'

For which Kepa comes, missing with a tame punch, Luckily for him, there's no one on the back stick to profit.

32'

Lamptey megs Alonso then wins a corner off Jorginho.

30'

Zouma treads on Maupay a right sair yin. There'll be another break while he clutches himself.

29'

Looking again at the goal, I wonder if Ryan needed to sell himself as he did. He made it really easy for Werner, not just offering but proffering a leg. He could've stood up and made a tricky finish difficult.

27'

Lamptey takes an arm in the face, so there's a break while he recovers.

26'

Lamptey swings over a lovely cross and Maupay gets slightly ahead of it, craning his torso to head up into the air for Kepa to catch. That was a chance.

25'

Chelsea will be delighted to welcome Brighton onto them, Werner especially, and he springs forward then shoots into feet.

23'

GOAL! Brighton & Hove Albion 0-1 Chelsea (Jorginho pen) The hop, the skip and Ryan goes to his left, so Jorginho goes to his right. Brighton will be sick and rightly so, because they've gifted a goal that wasn't being threatened.

21'

PENALTY TO CHELSEA! Alzate plays a blind square pass and Jorghinho is onto it, immediately finding Werner, who nips around Ryan, who brings him down. He does well to avoid a red card, but it's the right call because it wasn't a gratuitous foul.

21'

A lovely little triangle between March, Alzate and Trossard allows the latter into the box, but he can't find Maupay.

20'

James plays into Havertz but Webster sees him coming and intercepts.

19'

Mount controls nicely and swings in a cross that Werner glides towards, but he can't quite get the glance that it needs.

18'

This has got very dull very quickly.

17'

A quiet period.

14'

Webster's kick goes deep and is sent back across by Bissouma, but Trossard can't catch up with it.

14'

Maupay pulls right and hammers in a cross that might just find Trossard, but Zouma gets his body in the road, ceding a corner.

14'

Chelsea are sort of waiting for it to click. James has a go and moving down the right, but can't pick a pass into Werner.

11'

I wonder if, when Ziyech is ready, Mount will play off the left. That'd leave Chelsea without much natural width, so Lampard's ideal situation is probably Callum Hudson-Odoi earning the shirt. But he's got a lot of work to do.

11'

Brighton have started well here.

10'

Mount comes short for Zouma, turns, and curves a decent ball in behind for Havertz ... but it's just too strong.

9'

Chelsea knock it about, but Brighton's press forces them backwards.

8'

Alan Smith talks about Thiago Silva, and I guess he might bring some leadership and composure. Maybe I was just unlucky, but he's not a player I've ever seen play all that well, and had he been around a decade earlier, when the standard of centre-back was exceptional, he wouldn't have been in the top 10 in the world.

6'

Lamptey looks a real player and he outpaces Mount then plays into and off Trossard, but his next go, off Maupay, doesn't quite work out.

5'

Webster charges forward and whacks a hopeful one miles from everywhere.

4'

First flash of Werner, running in behind to demand a ball from James, who lifts in behind; he does well to catch up with it and crosses well, but it turns out he mistimed his run and was offside. He's so quick he doesn't need to, a line I won't be the first or last to write or speak.

3'

Bissouma bursts forward from midfield and James cuts him off.

2'

Tariq Lamptey gets a touch, and Martin Tyler talks about his bravery in leaving Stamford Bridge. My guess, though, is that he knew he had to leave because he knew James was slightly better.

1'

And off we go.

20:15

The players take a knee.

20:15

Havertz is very slender. I'd not surprised if he was soon prescribed a diet of Guinness and pies.

20:11

Here come the players...

20:09

I forgot to note that Ruben Loftus-Cheek is starting tonight. I'm not at all sold on him - he's not rubbish or anything, but I've not seen much to suggest he's good enough for a team looking to win titles. He might be a handy squad player, but he won't want to settle for that.

20:06

Gary Neville is saying that he expects Werner to score tonight, right at the time I considered a wager on the same. I believe that is called serendipity.

20:03

Lampard complains that usually when you buy new players they have time to bed in, which hasn't been the case this summer. Poor man.

20:03

Graham Potter expects a hard and intense game.

20:02

Lampard expect a lot from Werner and Havertz because they're good, and he also loves their personalities. He's not expecting to see everything tonight, though, and asks that they be given time.

20:00

8.15 is too late to start a game of football, unless I'm going to it and getting extra time going through my pre-match warm-up routine.

19:58
19:54

And some Hakim Ziyech...

19:53

Wolves have beaten Sheffield United 2-0 at Bramall Lane.

19:53
19:52

Here's what to expect from Havertz.

19:48

Lil Mikey Dean has removed his beard, embracing his eternal youthfulness without sacrificing his rugged good looks.

19:45
19:44

The pluralisation here is absolutely top notch.

19:42

I feel like I'm right there.

19:41

Ah man, I love watching Adama Traore, who's just strreaked across the pitch and walloped a shot wide.

19:37

Jorginho is captaining Chelsea tonight. I'm semi-surprised he's still at the club, and I'm not sure what his future is. Lampard could do with someone to pass into midfield, but the problem with Jorginho is that he's too weak and too slow. Perhaps Kante can mind him, but really he needs to be racing about the pitch winning the ball.

19:37
19:33
19:28
19:24

Chelsea, meanwhile, give Havertz and Werner starts. Wener, who can play off the left, is up front - that's a sensible call, I think, because ultimately he's a finisher - while Havertz is off the right. Ziyech will nab that spot when he's back, leaving Havertz to compete with Mason Mount for the role in behind. Of course there'll be rotation but that's not really a fair fight.

Otherwise, Reece James seems to have displaced Cesar Azpilicueta for good - he's going to be a player, in mine - while Marcos Alonso is on borrowed time, definitely at left-back because Ben Chilwell will play there when fit, and possibly at Chelsea.

19:20

I reckon Brighton will play three at the back. I'm looking forward to seeing how Ben White gets on in there - he was excellent for Leeds last season - and also enjoyed watching Tariq Lamptey at right wing-back. By the looks of things, Adam Lallana, who's back on the south coast, will play in a free role behind the two strikers.

19:19
19:19
19:19

Tonight's teams...

19:14

I'm looking forward to this one. Brighton were one of the better sides to watch last season, and they might just've found one in Neal Maupay, who has ability and attitude in equal measure.

Chelsea, meanwhile, have spent an absolute load of money on some excellent players, without sorting the dodgy defence which was their biggest problem. But it'll be fun to see how Kai Havertz and Timo Werner settle in, Hakim Ziyech too when he's fit, and games involving them are unlikely to be short of goals. Settle in!

18:00

Evening all, and welcome to Brighton & Hove Albion v Chelsea!
