FT: Chelsea 2-0 Newcastle. Easy as you like for the Blues as they make it five wins in a row in all competitions under Thomas Tuchel to move up to fourth in the Premier League table, above Liverpool. The real Timo Werner stood up, too. Thanks for joining us. Goodnight.
James cuts onto his right foot, drills for goal, but it is blocked.
Three minutes of added time here.
Carroll is such a presence in the box but yet again Peter Bankes spots a foul on Olivier Giroud, despite his claims for a penalty.
Kepa comes out to make a rather indecisive punch. Gets away with it though.
Tuchel wants more!
That was the moment really for Newcastle. If only Almiron would have kept his head!
CHANCE! Flick on from Carroll with his left foot, but Almiron volleys well over the top.
- OffJoe WillockNewcastle United
- OnAndy CarrollNewcastle United
Here he is. Andy Carroll replaces Willock.
SAVE! James right in the thick of the action as he drills for goal, but Darlow sticks out a leg to make the save.
- OffCallum Hudson-OdoiChelsea
- OnReece JamesChelsea
Another change for Chelsea as Reece James is on for Hudson-Odoi.
SAVE! Willock gets up really well to glance a header towards goal, but Kepa springs across to claw the ball out.
- OffAllan Saint-MaximinNewcastle United
- OnRyan FraserNewcastle United
Change for Newcastle with Ryan Fraser on for Saint-Maximin.
Werner goes tumbling again in the penalty area, but again nothing given.
- OffMason MountChelsea
- OnN'Golo KantéChelsea
Change for Chelsea with N'Golo Kante on for Mount.
The pace of the game has slowed right down. Chelsea taking a bit of a risk here.
Still, not bad eh?
- OffDwight GayleNewcastle United
- OnJoelintonNewcastle United
Change for Newcastle and it is Joelinton on for Gayle.
Werner still looking the most lively player here. His movement is something else.
Audacious effort from Shelvey from almost the halfway line, but that is never catching Kepa out.
Hudson-Odoi lays it off for the onrushing Kovacic, but he cannot keep the strike down.
Newcastle have at least upped the tempo a great deal here.
Hudson-Odoi shifts the ball past Lewis on the outside before whipping in a low cross. The ball just takes a touch off the left back and deflects wide of the far post for a corner.
Brilliant from Saint-Maximin to create an opening out of nothing, but Willock cannot convert the cross.
It is notable how Chelsea have taken their foot off the gas here a little.
Werner goes down wanting the free-kick, but nothing is given.
SAVE! Another one for Kepa to deal with, but that is another easy one from a Shelvey free-kick.
- 2nd Half
KICK OFF! We are back up and running here, and there is a early save for Kepa to make! A very easy one, mind.
About time, Turbo TImo.
- End of 1st Half
HT: Chelsea 2-0 Newcastle. Very, very comfortable for Chelsea here, with goals from Giroud and Werner, his first league goal for 100 days, separating the sides.
WIDE! Chelsea break fast, Mount is in acres of space, but drags his strike just wide.
Three minutes of added time at the end of the half.
First bit of football for Kepa, but it is only a back pass to deal with.
Newcastle seem to have taken two steps back this evening. Chelsea in cruise control already.
The drought is over for Werner as he scores his fifth league goal of the season at the far post, after he was left alone from a corner. Poor defending from Newcastle, as Lascelles cannot get the ball clear, and Werner pounces. His first league goal since November.
- GoalTimo WernerChelsea
GOOOOOOOAAAALLLLL!!! Chelsea 2-0 Newcastle. Werner on the scoresheeet himself this time to make it two.
Newcastle have not proven to be the toughest of opponents but Chelsea are looking good again here.
Will do his confidence a world of good.
OVER! Lovely movement from Werner as he darts into the box, but his first time effort flies just over.
Great play from Werner to get to the byline, he drills a low cross into the box, Darlow can only palm the ball out, and Giroud is there to fire home the loose ball. His fourth league goal of the season.
- GoalOlivier GiroudChelsea
GGGGOOOOOAAAALLLLL!!!! Chelsea 1-0 Newcastle. Giroud is on hand to put Chelsea in front.
Another delay in play as Werner gets some treatment. Seems to be bleeding from his lip.
Better pressure from Newcastle, but their final pass is letting them down.
WIDE! Big chance for Werner on the stretch, but he cannot find the target. He perhaps had more time than he realised and could have brought Alonso's header under control.
Hudson-Odoi cuts inside, the space opens up for the shot, but he elects to lay the ball off for Mateo Kovacic, whose tame effort is easily blocked.
A rare sight: a Newcastle attack! Allan Saint-Maximin gets the shot away, but it is blocked.
Here is that change as Abraham limps off. Giroud's 100th appearance as a substitute!
Olivier Giroud is getting ready. Abraham cannot continue.
Abraham has stayed down after that clean tackle from Lascelles and is getting some treatment.
TACKLE! Abraham steals in behind far too easily, but Jamaal Lascelles get back to make a goal-saving tackle.
It does seem to be the case.
Mount and Callum Hudson-Odoi are linking up well down the right, with the latter's cross blocked.
Newcastle cannot get out at the moment.
Nice ball in from Mason Mount right onto the head of Tammy Abraham, but the Chelsea striker gets his nod for goal all wrong, and the ball runs harmlessly wide.
All Chelsea, as you'd expect early on here.
First shot at goal come from Marcos Alonso, but that is a comfortable save for Karl Darlow.
Steve Bruce seem to have been rather bold with his selection. Newcastle appear to have three up top!
- 1st Half
KICK OFF! We are up and running at Stamford Bridge.
So here we go. What a night for Kepa. All eyes are on him tonight.
There has been some welcome improvement from the Magpies of late. Newcastle have won two of their last three Premier League games (L1), as many as they had in their previous 13 in the competition (D2 L9). The Magpies are looking to win consecutive away league games for the first time since July 2020.
Tuchel explains his reasoning for selecting Kepa.
All has gone to plan so far for Tuchel. Chelsea have won their last three Premier League matches, as many as they had in their previous 11 (W3 D3 L5). The Blues have conceded just one goal in their four league games under Tuchel, while they've faced on average just five shots per game under the German, compared to 10.1 under Frank Lampard in the league this term.
Tuchel is very much looking to the long-term at Chelsea.
Big budget social media.
HEAD TO HEAD: Chelsea have only lost one of their 25 home Premier League games against Newcastle (W18 D6), a 2-0 defeat in May 2012. The Magpies have lost their last seven away league games against Chelsea, scoring just three goals and conceding 18. Chelsea are looking to win eight consecutive home top-flight matches against an opponent for the first time since winning nine in a row against West Brom between 1984 and 2013.
KEPA STARTS, GAYLE IN FOR WILSON: The big team news is that Kepa Arrizabalaga makes just his fourth Premier League start of the season. The error-prone goalkeeper has played second-fiddle to summer signing Edouard Mendy this term, but Thomas Tuchel promised to give the stopper a "new start" and the Blues' new boss has delivered on that pledge. Tammy Abraham starts up front alongside Timo Werner, having notched the winner at Barnsley. For Newcastle, they were dealt the most severe blow with Callum Wilson ruled out injured. Dwight Gayle is the man to come in.
