Did you know? Crystal Palace have lost just one of their last 12 home league games against Aston Villa (W6 D5), going down 0-1 in December 2014.

“I think we’re building a squad that’s capable of challenging in the top half of this league. We want to keep progressing,” Smith said in a pre-match press conference. “I thought the first half of the season was very good. We’ve been a bit hit and miss in the second half but individually you can see we’ve got better players now and more depth for playing in the Premier League. That’s something we’ve worked hard to create and they will be better next season from playing this one.

For much of the season, it appeared Villa had all the credentials to challenge for a European place. But inconsistent form since January means they are battling just to make the top 10. All considered, however, after narrowly escaping the drop last season, Dean Smith will be delighted with how this term has panned out on the whole.

There are three Palace players starting today whose deals expire at the end of the season - Cahill, Townsend and Benteke. There is also some doubt as to whether Hodgson will stay at the club and when he was asked about his future on Friday, he said: "I haven’t talked about retirement as yet. There will come a time when I do, but I’m not talking about it yet.”

Palace boss Hodgson questioned the commitment of his players after the 3-1 defeat to Southampton last week and he'll be looking for a response from them today. With as many as 10 players out of contract this summer though, that might be a big ask.

Jack Grealish is on the bench for Villa again as he works towards full fitness. Ollie Watkins returns from suspension and replaces Keinan Davis. Tyrone Mings misses out through injury so Kourtney Hause comes in.
11:10
In a bid to stop the rot, Palace boss Roy Hodgson makes FIVE changes to the side that lost at Southampton. Jack Butland makes his debut for the club in goal, while Gary Cahill, James McCarthy, Jeffrey Schlupp and Andros Townsend also come in.
