KICK OFF! Liverpool get this opening weekend clash of champions up and running.
Ominous for Leeds? We will soon see...
Eurosport pundit, Paul Parker believes that Manchester City will not be able to challenge Liverpool for the Premier League this season.
DID YOU KNOW? Bielsa is only the fourth Argentine to manage in the English top flight. At 65, he will become the second oldest post-war permanent manager to take charge of his maiden game in the English top flight (behind Dick Advocaat who was 67 with Sunderland in 2015).
Jordan Henderson: “If we want to create special memories, they need to be earned, one challenge at a time, one sprint at a time, one save at a time and one battle at a time. It is right to be optimistic about what is ahead for us, but that feeling is built on a belief that we will indeed stay humble and stay focused.”
Pablo Hernandez: “Everybody in Leeds feels excited now. 16 years is a long time for this club and now we have a good chance again to put this club where it belongs in the Premier League, fighting with the big clubs in this country…. “This is the place everybody wants to be and now we have a big challenge in front of us.”
TOP FOUR PREDICTIONS: Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal will all fancy a crack – but who have some of our writers backed?
Jurgen Klopp in his first programme notes of the new league campaign: “I view this coming season as a wonderful opportunity. I’m sure there’ll be lots of talk about pressure and expectation, on us specifically. But so what! That’s not new, it’s been constant. It’s not about what other people think or want – it’s about what we want, and about what we are prepared to do about it! I look at my team and my staff and I see a group of people who are humble and ready. They embrace the culture of ‘let’s go again’.”
Leeds boss, Marcelo Bielsa: I don’t know what people thought about Leeds prior to me being here and I don’t know what they think now. One of the difficulties we will face this season is to continue to play the way we want. To begin with, we will try to play the same way. This is the best league in the world and it requires you to play at the highest level.”
Leeds leave new signing Rodrigo on the bench as Patrick Bamford leads the line in their first PL match in 16 years. However, there is a bow for Robin Koch. Skipper Liam Cooper is out injured.
Meanwhile, Liverpool have a familiar look to them, although captain Jordan Henderson makes a surprising start. Fabinho is on the bench.
CONFIRMED TEAMS – LIVERPOOL: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson, Henderson, Wijnaldum, Keita, Salah, Firmino, Mane… Subs: Adrian, Fabinho, Milner, Jones, Minamino, Origi, Matip. /// LEEDS UNITED: Meslier, Ayling, Koch, Struijk, Harrison, Klich, Dallas, Phillips, Costa, Hernandez, Bamford… Subs: Casilla, Poveda-Ocampo, Alioski, Roberts, Rodrigo, Shackleton, Casey.
