FULL TIME: Newcastle United 0-3 Brighton
An exceptional away performance from Brighton. They were in control for the full match. Lamptey and Maupay were the standout performers. Bruce got his team selection wrong. Newcastle United just couldn't handle the Seagulls. Very strong display from Potter's side.
Lewis has actually gone off after that red card incident. Newcastle United have used all their subs, so they are also finishing the match with just 10 men on the pitch.
- OffAaron ConnollyBrighton & Hove Albion
- OnAlireza JahanbakhshBrighton & Hove Albion
Brighton have made one final change after that sending off, with Jahanbakhsh on for Connolly for the last few minutes.
There will be three minutes of stoppage time played at the end of the match.
Of course, that decision will do little to change the dynamic of the match. Brighton have the points in the bag. It's just about seeing out the clock until the full time whistle now.
- Red cardYves BissoumaBrighton & Hove Albion
SENT OFF! After a lengthy VAR check, Bissouma is shown a red for a backheel flick into the face of Lewis. There was no intent in that, but the referee has decided it was excesive force.
Connolly's finish was exceptional, but the work from Maupay was even better. The Brighton striker recognised when to play the pass out to his teammate having driven 30 yards.
- GoalAaron ConnollyBrighton & Hove Albion
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Newcastle United 0 Brighton 3 (84 mins - Aaron Connolly). And that should be the points in the bag for Brighton. Maupay drives into the opposition half and plays the pass out to Connolly at the right time and the Republic of Ireland international curls home a wonderful finish into the far corner!
This has been an exceptional display from Brighton so far. Even in the moments when they haven't been pressing for a goal, they have looked very organised in terms of their structure.
Here's a statistic that sums up just how toothless Newcastle United have been this afternoon... shots on target - 0.
This could be the start of a difficult stretch of fixtures for Newcastle. After this, they face Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Wolves over the course of their next four games.
Newcastle attempt to get Wilson in behind the Brighton defence with a ball into the channel for him to chase, but Dunk was alert to the danger and makes the sliding interception.
- OffSolly MarchBrighton & Hove Albion
- OnAdam LallanaBrighton & Hove Albion
Indeed, here comes Lallana and it's March he replaces for the final 10 minutes.
It appears Potter is getting ready to make a change of his own. Lallana is receiving some instructions down on the touchline. Who will the former Liverpool man come on for?
Fraser takes a corner kick from the right side, but Dunk has no trouble in heading it away. Newcastle United keep playing balls into the box despite Brighton having a height advantage.
Hayden is down and receiving some treatment. Newcastle United are running out of team if they are to turn this match around. Hayden is back on his feet and will be fine to continue.
- OffJonjo ShelveyNewcastle United
- OnJoelintonNewcastle United
Another change for Newcastle with Joelinton coming off the bench for the final quarter of an hour.
Connolly over the bar! Brighton are banging on the door for a third goal here! Connolly gets in between the two centre backs, but sends his shot over the crossbar from 18 yards out.
Brighton have put their foot down on the pedal in the last few minutes, striking the woodwork twice. There is a sense that they are close to the third goal that would kill this game.
Off the post! Newcastle backed off and backed off and allowed Trossard to get the shot away from 20 yards out. But the Brighton midfielder is denied by the base of the post! Darlow was beaten!
Off the woodwork! Connolly was played in behind, he curled a right-footed shot towards the far corner, but his effort comes back off the post! The flag was raised late for an offside against the Irishman.
This has been marginally better from Newcastle United in this second half, but Brighton still look rather comfortable at the back. The Magpies haven't created many opportunities.
WILSON... he was offside! That was a golden opportunity for Wilson, with Almiron picking out the striker six yards out. He heads well wide, but the flag was up to spare his blushes.
Penalty claim! Almiron believes that he should have been awarded a penalty kick for a tackle from Burn inside the area, but replays show that the Newcastle United man went down easily.
It now appears that Burn is playing at left back with White on the right side of a back four for Brighton. Potter has decided to change the shape of his team in defence.
As we thought might be the case, it appears Lamptey has picked up a knock. The young full back heads straight down the St James' Park tunnel after being replaced by Burn.
- OffTariq LampteyBrighton & Hove Albion
- OnDan BurnBrighton & Hove Albion
Indeed, there's the change for the away side and Burn comes on for Lamptey.
Almiron has made a difference to Newcastle United since coming off the bench for the start of the season half. The former Atlanta United man makes things happen in the final third.
Newcastle United are pressing much higher up the pitch in this second half, but Brighton are dealing with this rather well so far. They have the technical ability play around the press.
It appears Brighton are going to make a change here. Burn is getting ready to come on for the away side. Is he going to come on for Lamptey? Has he picked up an injury?
Trossard takes aim! Brighton win the ball high up the pitch, with Trossard working space for the shot on the edge of the Newcastle box. But Darlow makes the comfortable diving save.
PICTURE: Maupay's double has Brighton in control.
That seemed like a bit of a waste from Newcastle United. They had a freekick in a dangerous position, but for some reason they played it into a central area rather than whipping one in.
This is already much better from Newcastle United. They look so much more balanced all over the pitch and have made a strong start to the second half. Taking up dangerous positions.
Chance for Shelvey! That's much better from Newcastle United. Almiron gets down the left side and cuts a pass back for Shelvey in the area. The midfielder scuffs his shot wide of the goal.
Will the change of formation work for Newcastle United in this second half? Bruce needed to do something. Brighton were all over the home side in the opening 45 minutes.
- OffAndy CarrollNewcastle United
- OnMiguel AlmirónNewcastle United
Bruce has made a change to his Newcastle team at the start of the second half. On comes Almiron for Carroll!

- End of 1st Half
HALF TIME: Newcastle United 0-2 Brighton. What a half of football for the Seagulls. They are flying! The only regret Potter will likely have is that his team haven't scored more than two!
Wilson has barely had any service this afternoon. The new Newcastle United striker made a scoring start to the season last week against West Ham, but he has barely had a sniff today.
Bruce has some work to do at the half time interval. This has been a poor half for Newcastle United. They have been distinctly second best and should be more than two down.
Cross into the box! Fraser has time and space to get a delivery into the area from the left side, but he only had Wilson in the middle to aim for and Ryan makes the punched clearance.
There will be five minutes of stoppage time played at the end of the half.
A decent spell of pressure from Newcastle United at the end of the first half, but Brighton pose such a threat on the counter attack. This hasn't been a good tactical match up for the Magpies.
That's Newcastle United's first shot of the game, and it was barely a shot. It was an effort from distance from Shelvey which was blocked. The Magpies have been so toothless.
Trossard effort from distance! Once again, Newcastle fail to close down a Brighton player 20 yards out and they are lucky again that the shot flies over the crossbar. Decent chance.
- Yellow cardJamaal LascellesNewcastle United
Now it's Lascelles who enters the book for a bad tackle on Maupay.
Newcastle United have settled down a little bit in the last 10 minutes. This has been a poor first half, but Brighton looked set to run away with things after the opening 25 minutes.
Look who's at the game...
That injury to Saint-Maximim perhaps explains why he was struggling so much to get back and defend against Lamptey. Will Fraser stand a better chance against the young full back?
- OffAllan Saint-MaximinNewcastle United
- OnRyan FraserNewcastle United
Indeed, there's the change for Newcastle. Fraser comes on for Saint-Maximim.
It looks like Newcastle United are going to be forced into a change here. Saint-Maximim is down on the turf and Bruce has already prepared Fraser to come on. He's on the touchline.
Lamptey is back on his feet and will be fine to continue. The Brighton right back has been everywhere in this first half! He has been the best player on the pitch by some distance.
Lamptey injured? This is a bit of a concern for Potter. Lamptey might just have injured himself in making that sliding tackle on Wilson. The medical staff are on the pitch seeing to him.
What a tackle! It appeared Wilson was clean in on goal, but Lamptey showed incredible pace to get back and make the crucial sliding challenge on the Newcastle United striker! Incredible from the youngster!
- Yellow cardJamal LewisNewcastle United
Lamptey beats Lewis to a ball over the top and the Newcastle man goes through him. Booking warranted.
It almost feels like Newcastle United are being out-numbered all over the pitch. This is a credit to the Brighton system. the 3-4-2 shape that they are using is really working today.
Shot over the bar! Bissouma had so much space to get the shot away from 20 yards out, but the Brighton midfielder could only shoot over the crossbar. He should have done better.
Wilson is given his first opportunity inside the box, but it was excellent defending from Webster who just stood up to the Newcastle United striker and made the block. Solid.
Bruce needs to do something about the left side here. Saint-Maximin has no idea how to defend against Lamptey. It's as if the Brighton full back has the full wing to himself.
Shelvey has the chance to swing a freekick delivery into the Brighton box, but Ryan makes a clear shout and claims the ball cleantly. Newcastle need to make use of set pieces.
What a start to the season Lamptey has enjoyed. He was fantastic against his former team Chelsea last weekend and he's been the most dangerous player on the pitch today so far.
This was the second goal!
Lamptey in behind again! Newcastle United just can't handle the young Brighton full back at the moment. This time his cross is deflected into the hands of Darlow. So much pace!
White plays a wonderful cross-field pass out to Connolly on the left side. That's something the young defender showed he could do on loan at Leeds United last season.
The intensity and speed of Brighton's play in the opening 15 minutes of this match has been too much for Newcastle United. Some of their players are already looking pretty gassed!
Brighton counter attack! Lamptey has a whole half to sprint into, but Newcastle have two players getting back with him and Manquillo makes the crucial challenge to stop the youngster.
- Yellow cardJonjo ShelveyNewcastle United
Frustration from Shelvey and that's a yellow card for the Newcastle midfielder.
Bruce is out on the touchline and looks suitably concerned by what he has seen from his side in the opening 10 minutes or so. Newcastle look well off the pace. Brighton are so much sharper.
This was the first goal!
- GoalNeal MaupayBrighton & Hove Albion
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Newcastle United 0 Brighton 2 (9 mins - Neal Maupay). After a lengthy VAR check, the goal is given! What a start for the Seagulls! Trossard got down the right side and crossed for Maupay to finish. It was a very nice, side-foot finish from the Brighton striker! Is there any way back for Newcastle?
VAR check ongoing! This actually could be tighter than it initially looked. Trossard was the one who looked offside, but the officials are taking their time over this. Very, very close.
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO... NO! Brighton think they have scored a second, with Trossard crossing for Maupay to finish, but the flag is up for offside and it's chalked off!
The Magpies putting on a show for their beloved owner...
You have to feel slightly sorry for Saint-Maximim. He was trying to help out defensively and actually won the ball, but he went through the back of Lamptey. That's why it was a penalty.
- Goal by penaltyNeal MaupayBrighton & Hove Albion
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Newcastle United 0 Brighton 1 (4 mins - Neal Maupay). Brighton have an early lead at St James' Park! The VAR decided that it was indeed a penalty kick, with Saint-Maximim coming through the back of Lamptey, and Maupay converted from 12 yards out, slamming his shot into the back of the net.
PENALTY KICK TO BRIGHTON! Saint-Maximim brings down Lamptey inside the area and the referee points to the spot!
Newcastle United started their Premier League campaign with a good away win over West Ham. Can they build on that with another win this afternoon? This could be a good season for the Magpies.
