FULL-TIME: Wolves 1-1 Southampton

A strong last 20 minutes to the game for Wolves after the introduction of Neto denies Southampton the win after Walcott's opening goal, but they will be rueing the one-on-one he missed shortly afterwards that potentially cost them the win. In the end though a draw is a fair result for a match in which no team really imposed themselves.

CLOSE!! What a chance for Wolves to equalise! It's a well-worked free-kick that finds Jimenez beyond the Saints defensive line but he miscontrols the ball and it rolls out for a goal-kick. He would've been in a fantastic position to shoot if he brought that down better.

65'

SOO CLOSE!!! What a pass from Adams, who lofts a ball from deep in midfield to put Walcott through on goal. He has plentiful time and space but puts the ball marginally wide of the goal and the onrushing Patricio.

  • Theo Walcott

53'

CLOSE!! Ait-Nouri involved again as he crosses into Jimenez from the left but the Mexican striker is unable to connect with the ball cleanly and it's a missed opportunity to compensate for his lack of involvement so far this evening.

52'

SAVED!! McCarthy is in red-hot form this evening! Podence drills a shot at the near post after being fed through by Ait-Nouri and beating Vestergaard but McCarthy palms it away.

51'

That's the Traore we know! He storms forward down the right, leaving Bednarek in his wake and floats in a cross trying to find Podence by the far post on the left but there's too much on it and it goes out for a goal kick. Hasenhuttl is fuming on the touchline because he believes there was a foul on Walcott in the build-up.

49'

Moutinho's free-kick finds its way to Dendoncker who awkwardly hits the ball wide. The flag is up though and he's offside anyway.

Back underway with the second half now!

Southampton have looked much better on the ball but perhaps more exposed in defence. Overlapping runs on either wing seem to be creating the majority of their chances but Wolves have done well to remain compact defensively and pack their box with bodies.

Lots of Wolves fans upset with the slightly cautious style of play on show, with Southampton dominating possession and Wolves looking to win the ball and use their pace to attack on the counter.

Some controversy over refereeing decisions too as many understandably feel that Romeu and Vestergaard's two fouls that led to free-kicks were not much better than the fouls Neves and Traore got yellow cards for late on in the half.

Will be interesting to see if the game opens up a bit more in the second half!

HALF-TIME: Wolves 0-0 Southampton

Not an awful game of football so far but the chances have been fairly limited although Patricio and McCarthy both deserve credit for keeping it even as both 'keepers made some brilliant saves in that half. It was definitely a midfield battle though - you can see why Nuno Espirito Santo decided to play with a back 4 and 3 centre midfielders because it stifles Southampton's midfield threat at times and makes the high press slightly less effective. The home side will surely be looking to get the ball to Traore more often though because on the one occasion he had the chance to run at Vestergaard, the Danish centre back was forced to give away a foul.

36'

SAVED!! Lovely delivery from Moutinho and Podence is free to glance a header goalwards that McCarthy manages to tip over the bar!

35'

First time this game we've seen Traore be direct with his running, launching into a sprint before being clipped by Vestergaard and it will be a free-kick to Wolves.

32'

CLOSE!! A great passing move starts with Romeu near the centre circle as he darts a pass into Adams who promptly puts Armstrong through a goal, but the Scot is stretching for the ball and although he manages to poke it past Patricio, the ball trickles past the wrong side of the post.

30'

Traore picks Romeu's pocket in midfield and weaves his way through a couple defenders before deciding to shoot from range due to a lack of teammates in space but his deflected shot is saved with ease by McCarthy.

28'

Bertrand passes the ball into space for Djenepo to make a run to the byline and his eventual cross sails across the face of goal without managing to find a teammate.

25'

Wolves have a free-kick near the corner spot and once it's delivered there's a bit of head tennis in and around the box before Boly heads the ball well wide of the post.

23'

Walker-Peters does well to win a free-kick after a mazy run forward and Ward-Prowse's resulting free-kick is headed promisingly into the box before Neves and Semedo manage to hoof it away.

19'

Podence struggles to control a long pass from Ait-Nouri on the edge of the box and Ward-Prowse clears the ball forward quickly.

14'

SAVED!! Armstrong thinks about a shot before playing a clever pass through to Walcott. It's at a slight angle but he's close to goal and he just doesn't get enough on the shot that he's trying to guide towards the far corner and Patricio makes a comfortable save.

6'

DOUBLE SAVE! The free-kick goes straight into the wall but Semedo and Dendocker have two shots well saved by Alex McCarthy shortly after. The Saints goalkeeper is perhaps unfairly ignored in the England 'keeper discussion.

5'

Romeu lucky not to get carded there after Bednarek messes up a clearance and he cynically hacks Podence down just outside the box. Will still be a free-kick for Wolves in a potentially dangerous position though!

3'

Wolves appear to be lining up in a slightly different shape than usual as they're currently playing with a back 4 rather than back 5, with Dendocker currently in midfield with Neves and Moutinho. Unsure whether it's a temporary switch or more permanent one for this game.

2'

Bertrand produces a brilliant cross from the left and catches Adams slightly by surprise as he probably expected Boly to get to it first. Still so much to do if he made contact with it but a decent opportunity nonetheless.

KICK-OFF: The match gets underway

19:53

Adama Traore's lack of first team action this season has been a major talking point considering his strong form last season and recent caps for Spain, Diogo Jota's departure and the key fact that new contract discussions are currently hanging in the balance.

19:48
19:31

HEAD TO HEAD

When these two teams last met in January, Wolves ran away 3-2 winners. In the two previous Premier League games these sides have played against each other at the Molineux, Wolves won one of them 2-0 and the other was a 1-1 draw.

So matches between both these teams often tend to be close encounters!

19:25

WHAT AN ACHIEVEMENT

It is the first time he has not started for Wolves in a league game since September 2017 and agonisingly, he was only 6 games behind Phil Parkes' club record of 127.

19:13

SAINTS TEAM NEWS

Southampton went 6 games unbeaten before the international break and they will be looking to continue that form tonight, only changing one player from their 2-0 home win against Newcastle thanks to Ryan Bertrand's return from injury that sees Jack Stephens back on the bench.

As their talisman Danny Ings is still out injured, Che Adams once again leads the line with Stuart Armstrong and Theo Walcott in behind him in manager Ralph Hasenhuttl's typical 4-2-2-2 formation.

19:07

WOLVES TEAM NEWS

The West Midlands side make two changes to the XI that started in their defeat to Leicester on 8th November. The first of those is Joao Moutinho coming in for captain Conor Coady who had to withdraw from the England squad after coming into contact with someone who has Covid-19, thus requiring him to self-isolate. Dendoncker will move back into central defence to fill in for him, while Moutinho will replace the Belgian in central midfield.

On the right wing in their 3-4-3 formation, Adama Traore will be making his first Wolves start since September, with Pedro Neto dropped to the bench to accommodate him.
