Dominic Calvert-Lewin header hands Everton win at Tottenham

Dominic Calvert-Lewin headed the winner as Everton eased past lacklustre Tottenham 1-0 to kick-start their Premier League campaign with three points.

The Toffees made a bright opening and looked comfortable with a midfield packed with impressive debutants James Rodriguez, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Allan.

And they were almost rewarded when Richarlison latched on to a sloppy backpass by Ben Davies, rounded Hugo Lloris before shanking over an open goal.

Spurs eventually grew into the game and both Dele Alli and debutant Matt Doherty forced smart saves from Jordan Pickford, but there was little to separate the two sides as they went in goalless at the interval.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side continued to impress in the second half and took a deserved lead when Lucas Digne curved in a magnificent ball, met by the leaping Dominic Calvert-Lewin who powered a header past Hugo Lloris.

Mourinho’s men looked lifeless and bereft of ideas, and failed to create a single clear chance in the second half as Everton continued to press.

Richarlison spurned three chances to kill the game but his wayward finishing will be forgiven by his teammates as they coasted to their first win over Spurs since 2012 and their first away a win at a ‘big six’ side since 2013.

Mourinho, meanwhile, must reflect on why his side showed so little in their first match of the season.

Everton and Spurs look worlds apart. There was just one goal in this but the gap is far bigger behind the scenes. Everton have made three excellent signings that slipped into this game and dominated a ‘big six’ side. James, Allan and Doucoure were all brilliant and should have Toffees fans very excited. Carlo Ancelotti has done great business off the pitch and delivered immediately. His influence is clear. Everton never dared to drop off after they went ahead and were unlucky they didn’t double their lead.

Spurs on the other hand looked insipid, with the big names like Son and Kane going missing entirely. Moura kept running but it was nowhere near enough, and after Everton’s goal they failed to create anything at all. Mourinho chopped and changed things but there was little he could do from the sidelines to rally a team that looked uninterested in playing football, let alone winning.

James Rodriguez (Everton). The Colombian was in imperious form on his debut as the Toffees dominated Tottenham in midfield. He ran the show alongside fellow debutants Doucoure and Allan, three reasons for Everton fans to be very optimistic.

17’ - WHAT A MISS! Richarlison is through after a very shaky backpass by Davies. He sweeps past Lloris and the goal is wide open but it's tough on the angle and he shanks it over. A gift of an opening and they've spurned it.

43 - GREAT SAVE! Doherty is denied a dream debut goal as he plays a one-two with Kane, the striker lifting the ball over the top only for the right-back to find Pickford's right boot. Lovely pass.

55 - GOAL! Spurs 0-1 Everton (Calvert-Lewin). Everton have the lead! Digne curves in an absolute masterpiece of a free-kick and Calvert-Lewin is there to head home. What a cross that is.
