- End of 2nd Half
Full-time: Chelsea run out deserved winners thanks to Romelu Lukaku's excellent double. The victory moves Thomas Tuchel's side up to second in the early Premier League table.
- GoalRomelu LukakuChelsea
GOAL! Chelsea 3-0 Aston Villa (Romelu Lukaku): The Belgian is at the double to give Chelsea a rather flattering victory. Azpilicueta races down the right on the counter-attack and pulls it back to Lukaku, who takes a touch and fires it into the roof of the net.
Apologies for the lack of commentary - a slight technical error.
Mendy won't be beaten like that. Watkins, for what feels like the umpteenth time today, gets a shot away, this time from distance, but it's simple for the Chelsea goalkeeper.
- OffDouglas LuizAston Villa
- OnMarvelous NakambaAston Villa
Aston Villa sub: Luiz makes way for Marvelous Nakamba for the last 10 minutes or so.
Villa are still pushing for a way back as they force a corner, but Mendy gathers the ball on the second attempt.
Wide! Alonso nearly gets on the scoresheet but drags his shot wide. That would have killed it!
Traore creates the space to get a shot away and wins Villa a corner. Konsa wriggles free from his marker to meet McGinn's resultant delivery but directs his header straight at Mendy.
Chelsea fans are in buoyant form as Hudson-Odoi provides the trickery, but if Aston Villa get on the scoresheet soon it could make for a very interesting finish.
Aston Villa sub: A frustrating evening for Ings comes to an end as he's replaced by Traore.
Now that he's got the feel for it, Kovacic is on the search for his second as he curls an effort wide from the edge of the penalty area.
Chelsea sub: Cesar Azplicueta comes on for Havertz as Chelsea make a change to their system.
The presence of Jorginho has helped Chelsea in the second half. It is hard to see how Saul gets his place back in the side after today.
Bailey shows some quick feet and trickery to draw the foul from Alonso, who goes into the book for his troubles.
A rare foray forward for Villa in the second half as Watkins' shot is deflected behind for a corner.
- OffJacob RamseyAston Villa
- OnLeon BaileyAston Villa
Leon Bailey replaces Ramsey as Dean Smith desperately tries to turn the tide.
It's all Chelsea now. Alonso races down the left but his cross is scrambled behind for a corner by Mings. Nothing comes of the corner, but the Blues are in total control at the moment.
That second goal has changed things and Chelsea are coasting now, as Havertz creates an opening but drags his shot wide.
Villa fans, look away now...
GOAL! Chelsea 2-0 Aston Villa (Mateo Kovacic): A rare goal by Kovacic doubles Chelsea's advantage! But it's a gift from Mings who sells his goalkeeper short with a back pass and the Croatian makes no mistake with the finish as he grabs his second Premier League goal of his career,
Villa continue to apply pressure immediately after the restart as they force a corner. Mendy comes to claim the delivery but fails to grasp the ball and he's bailed out by a defender.
- 2nd Half
Kick-off! The second half gets underway! No surprise that Jorginho replaced the woeful Saul at the break.
- End of 1st Half
Half-time: Chelsea lead at the break but Aston Villa have been the better side at Stamford Bridge. The visitors have grown into the contest since Romelu Lukaku's opener and should at least be level in the game.
Encouraged to shoot, Rudiger obliges and shoots into row-Z from almost the halfway line. Wild.
Two minutes will be added at the end of an entertaining first half.
Another long throw is launched into the box by Cash but this time it's a straight forward clearance as Alonso gets it away.
Villa nick the ball in midfield once again. Ramsey is allowed space to run into and accepts the invitation to shoot but it's down the throat of Mendy.
Ziyech lets fly from distance but it's routine for Steer. Apart from picking the ball out of his net, the Villa goalkeeper hasn't had much to do.
It has been almost one-way traffic since Lukaku scored - and it hasn't been Chelsea asking the questions...
Saul is really struggling in Chelsea's midfield on his debut as he gifts the ball straight to Ings, who is then fouled by Thiago Silva. Somehow the Brazilian avoids a yellow card.
Double save! How are Villa not level?! Chelsea fail to deal with another set-piece as Mings unloads a powerful shot which Mendy does well to parry. The rebound drops to Konsa but he doesn't get a clean connection and the Chelsea goalkeeper is on his feet to tip it around the post.
There are plenty of gaps in the Chelsea midfield for Villa to exploit as Watkins sees his shot blocked by Thiago Silva. Thomas Tuchel will not be happy with how his side have played since taking the lead.
The referee gives Chelsea a soft free-kick in midfield, prompting a furious reaction from Konsa.
- Yellow cardTyrone MingsAston Villa
Mings goes into the book for a foul on Hudson-Odoi, which is rather harsh.
Chelsea can only clear a cross from the left as far as Watkins, who lays it off to Luiz, but he balloons it way over the bar. Villa may be behind but they're asking plenty of questions of the home side's defence.
So close! Saul losses possession and suddenly Watkins is through on goal as he rounds Mendy but Thiago Silva - as he often is - is in the right place to make a vital block from his scuffed shot.
More good goalkeeping from Mendy as he takes control by punching the resultant Villa corner clear.
Save! But Villa aren't prepared to feel sorry for themselves. Watkins rifles a shot from the left and draws a decent save from Mendy, who pushes it around the post.
GOAL! Chelsea 1-0 Aston Villa (Romelu Lukaku): It had to be him! Lukaku opens the scoring in typical clinical style! Kovacic skips away from a challenge in midfield and sets the Belgian away with a lovely through ball. He sends his marker Tuanzebe for a coffee before sliding it past Steer for his first-ever goal at Stamford Bridge!
There's a concern about Alonso who has been hurt by Cash's tackle. He's going to stay on for now, however.
Off the crossbar! Chelsea go agonisingly close to making the breakthrough! Hudson-Odoi's corner causes chaos and Konsa's clearance bounces off the crossbar and away to safety. That was very nearly an own goal!
- Yellow cardJacob RamseyAston Villa
Ramsey will be walking on eggshells now, though, as he goes into the book for a cynical foul on Ziyech in midfield.
Ramsey snaps into gear with a fine run into the Chelsea box and his low cross is scrambled behind by Rudiger for Villa's first corner.
Villa have their first sight of goal. A free-kick is swung in from the left, Konsa rises tallest but can't steer his header on target.
Another corner comes to nothing for Chelsea following Alonso's deflected effort.
Chelsea waste little time in going on the attack as Rudiger steps out of defence to play a one-two with Havertz before shooting a deflected shot over the bar to force an early corner.
- 1st Half
Kick-off! The players take the knee and Aston Villa get us underway at Stamford Bridge!
Did you know? Chelsea have lost just one of their last 16 home league games against Aston Villa (W11 D4), going down 3-1 in December 2011.
Dean Smith opts to play two up front with Ollie Watkins partnering Danny Ings in attack. Emi Martinez and Emi Buendia are unavailable due to their involvement with Argentina during the international break so Jed Steer takes the gloves. John McGinn is fit again and comes in for Ashley Young.
Thomas Tuchel makes five changes from Chelsea's last outing. Saul Niguez is thrown straight in to make his debut. Thiago Silva has been cleared to play and goes in alongside Trevoh Chalobah. Callum Hudson-Odoi and Hakim Ziyech are also recalled. Andreas Christensen, Cesar Azpilicueta and Mason Mount drop to the bench while N’Golo Kante and Reece James are unavailable.
