Full-time: The referee calls time on a dramatic match at Old Trafford where everything that could have gone wrong for Manchester United ultimately did. Not only is their unbeaten league run over, but they've also lost Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire to injury - and Bruno Fernandes also missed a penalty in stoppage-time!

Fernandes misses! He skies it over the bar and Villa remain 1-0 ahead! What drama at Old Trafford!

Yellow card! Fred will be walking on eggshells for the remainder as he cynically fouls McGinn.

Pogba has come alive and is trying to make something happen. He rides a couple of challenges but can't beat Martinez with the shot.

Pogba pokes an effort wide as another United chance comes to nothing.

Here come United on the counter, but Greenwood has few team mates in support and has to go it alone, eventually dragging a shot wide.

De Gea save! Villa break after Doulas Luiz wins the ball in the middle and ushers through Watkins. He checks onto his right foot and launches a shot that De Gea does well to save.

Yellow card! McGinn's frustration boils over as he takes a swipe at Fenandes and gives the referee no choice.

A promising move from United ends in frustration. Fred wins it in the middle and Fernandes finds Greenwood, but his shot is straight at Martinez.

No penalty! It's United's turn to appeal for a spot-kick. Konsa appears to have a hold of Maguire's shirt and the fact the United defender goes to ground gives the referee a decision to make, and the decision is no penalty.

Maguire, who is still on the pitch by the way, appears to drag McGinn to ground but the referee allows play to continue. The Villa forward could have been through on goal and he's asking if VAR is having a look.

Over! United create their first chance since the restart as Ronaldo bursts into the box, rolls it to McTominay, who lays it into the path of Pogba and his first-time curler is just over the bar.

Fernandes is well placed to clear Douglas Luiz's corner delivery at the near post.

Things are simply not clicking for United right now. De Gea's pass is straight to Ings but Varane deflects it behind for another corner.

No penalty! McGinn rolls a cross into the feet of Watkins, but he goes down after minimal contact from Wan-Bissaka. The referee isn't moved by Villa's appeals.

Lindelof is preparing to come on for Maguire as the United captain is unable to continue. This is another blow!

A huge concern for Man United as Maguire is down injured with what looks to be a calf injury. After losing Shaw in the first half, Solskjaer cannot afford another absentee.

McGinn's cross is headed on by Watkins, Ings looks to be fouled by Maguire inside the penalty area, but thankfully for United the offside flag goes up to frustrate Villa.

Jeers from the home supporters as Cash takes his time with a throw-in. It's worth the wait however as Douglas Luiz floats a dangerous cross into the box Varane deals with.

  • 2nd Half

Kick-off! The second half is underway at Old Trafford! We've had plenty of chances, who will draw blood first?

  • End of 1st Half

Half-time: It's all square after an entertaining first half at Old Trafford.

Close! Fernandes delivers and the unmarked Pogba glances a header agonisingly wide!

McGinn brings down Pogba and concedes a free-kick. Ronaldo slams the resulting set-piece into the wall and Greenwood forces a corner

Good save! Fernandes' free-kick delivery is sent to the back post where Maguire is unmarked. HIs powerful header looks destined for the top corner but Martinez spreads himself to make an excellent save! That's the closest United have come.

Hause commits a foul on Ronaldo and United have a chance to get the ball into the box.

Another Villa chance! Konsa climbs higher than Wan-Bissaka to meet Douglas Luis' corner but can't keep his header down!

Maguire, in the United wall, gets his head to Douglas Luis' free-kick attempt and Villa win the corner.

United are struggling to get to grips with the game following the injury to Shaw, and now Fernandes concedes a cheap foul on Douglas Luiz.

Sub: Shaw, who has looked off the pace from the start, limps off the pitch and is replaced by Dalot.

The hosts are going to be forced into an early sub as Shaw is back on the floor and won't be able to continue. Dalot is preparing to come on.

United have had plenty of attempts so far but Martinez has only had to make one routine save.

Greenwood puts the burners on to get away from his marker and drill a low cross into the box, searching for Ronaldo at the far post. But Mings is alert to the danger.

  • Luke Shaw

Villa break, but Shaw takes one for the team by hauling down Cash, with the referee immediately going to his pocket to produce the yellow card.

Shaw is fine to continue and back into the action.

A pause in play allows us a chance to take a breather as Shaw requires treatment for a knock, just moments after Fred blazed over.

You can't take your eyes off this one! Fernandes pulls it back for Pogba, who drops a shoulder and shoots from inside the box, but Cash makes a crucial block to deflect it behind for a corner!

United get away with one! Maguire's back pass is awkward for De Gea, who has to stretch to keep it out and his clearance lands straight at the feet of Watkins, who shoots straight at the United goalkeeper!

Fernandes bends a cross to the back post, searching for the darting run of Ronaldo, but the 36-year-old can't quite reach it.

Shot! What an open game we're having here at Old Trafford, and it's United's turn to threaten. Fernandes feeds it to Greenwood inside the penalty area, he checks inside but fails to generate the power in his shot needed to beat Martinez.

Villa should score! Shaw is caught sleeping as McGinn's through ball finds Cash in behind. He rolls the ball across the face of goal, it looks a simple tap-in for Targett but he skies it over the bar!

Villa tiptoe forward in possession, Cash delivers a cross but it's away by Maguire. With the visitors committing players forward, United are intent on playing on the counter.

Pogba is looking for Ronaldo with a first-time cross but it evades everyone in red.

Fernandes collects De Gea's clearance on the left flank and finds Ronaldo in space, who has a pot-shot from 20 yards but he drags the effort well wide.

United make a mess of the resulting corner as Shaw is caught offside as he collects the return ball.

Ings is pressed and harried on the edge of the United penalty area, losing possession. The hosts break rapidly as Greenwood looks to create the opening but an excellent tackle from McGinn means United have to settle for the corner.

Fernandes and Ronaldo combine to usher in Greenwood, but the United forward makes his run a fraction too early and is caught offside.

It's Fernandes, believe it or not, but it's a tame free-kick which the Villa wall easily blocks.

Right then, United have a free-kick in shooting territory. Fernandes and Ronaldo are over it, who will win the debate?

Villa's front two of Ings and Watkins already looking sharp, particularly the former.

Kick-off! We're underway in Manchester!

Just five minutes until kick-off now at Old Trafford! Can Villa win their first match against United since December 2009?

Manchester United have won 18 of their last 21 home league games against Aston Villa (D2 L1), failing to score on just one occasion in that run.

20 minutes to kick off. How're you feeling, United and Villa fans?

AVFC: Martinez, Cash, Konsa, Hause, Mings, Targett, Ramsey, Luiz, McGinn, Watkins, Ings.

Man Utd: de Gea, Wan-Bissaka, Varane, Maguire, Shaw, Fred, McTominay, Pogba, Fernandes, Greenwood, Ronaldo.

Half an hour to kick off. Here are the team line-ups if you missed them...

For Dean Smith, a back five, we believe. Three centre-backs ahead of Emi Martinez: Kortney Hause, Ezri Konsa to the right, and captain Tyrone Mings to the left. Wing-backs Matty Cash and Matt Targett will stay wide and look to create overloads on the flanks, isolating their opposing full-backs, Youngster Jacob Ramsey keeps his place in the engine room alongside workhorse duo John McGinn and Douglas Luiz, and Ollie Watkins and Danny Ings will look to stretch the home defence with their pace in behind on the counter attack.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer springs no surprises here. His strongest line-up, bar a certain midfield pairing, which is sure to anger United fans yet again with Scott McTominay and Fred babysitting each other as two cautious yet energetic sixes. Cristiano Ronaldo leads the line, supported by Paul Pogba on the left, Mason Greenwood off the right, and Bruno Fernandes the ten. The back five remains the same as usual; Raphael Varane alongside Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka providing defensive width.

Let's dissect these teams, shall we?

Here's the visitors' line-up...

Could they be the pantomime VILLAINS today?
