Fulham 2-1 Leeds United: Visitors' rotten run in Premier League continues after Illan Meslier errors

Leeds United remain in a perilous position in the Premier League table after losing 2-1 at Fulham. The Whites stay two points above the drop zone, but the three teams directly below them – Everton, Nottingham Forest and Leicester City – all have a game in hand later on Saturday. Leeds have lost their last three games by an aggregate of 13-3 after a miserable spell of form.

'I can't love these players more' - Arteta after dropped points in title race

Two Illan Meslier errors proved crucial as Fulham claimed a deserved 2-1 victory over relegation-threatened Leeds United.
Harry Wilson half-volleyed the Cottagers in front just before the hour mark after the French keeper could only paw Willian's cross to the Welsh winger at the back post eight yards from goal.
The advantage was doubled when Antonee Robinson drove a cross into the six-yard box and the Leeds stopper could only push the ball into the path of Andreas Pereira, who gleefully slammed the ball home.
Leeds were given a lifeline when Patrick Bamford's close-range shot was deflected into his own goal by Joao Palhinha 12 minutes from time, but they never really looked like grabbing an equaliser.
The deficit could have been greater as Fulham hit the woodwork with two free kicks in the second-half from Pereira and Willian, with the latter's effort brilliantly pushed onto the crossbar by the beleaguered Meslier.
The result sees Leeds remain two points and two positions above the bottom three, while Fulham rise above neighbours Brentford into ninth.

TALKING POINT

If Leeds stay up it will be due to the similarly poor form of others - This is a side with very little going for it. The return of Liam Cooper to the defence makes them far more solid at the back, giving them the opportunity to grab points, but wins are going to be hard to come by. There seems little system in their attacking movement and the skillful attackers they have look bereft of confidence. Most damningly, Fulham and fellow West London sides Brentford and Chelsea are the three clubs with nothing to play for in the last month of the season, yet Leeds showed nothing to suggest they had a greater desire to grab the three points than Marco Silva's side.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH

Joao Paulhinha (Fulham) - As important as spearhead Aleksandar Mitrovic is to Fulham, the success they have had in his recent absence perhaps is indicative of the status of Palhinha as their most important player. He disrupts opposition possession - stunting attacks - and then plays the ball and creates space for the club's silky forwards to cause damage in the opposing third. It seems harsh to deny him the award for the unlucky own goal.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

58' GOAL FOR FULHAM! Fine run from Robinson to the edge of the area before he fed Willian on the left flank and his cross could only be pawed away to the right-hand side of the area by Meslier where Wilson swivelled and fired a half-volley in off the bar.
64' OFF THE BAR! It looked the side of the box for a left-footer but Pereira took the kick and it had Meslier beaten, but smacked the face of the bar.
72' GOAL FOR FULHAM! Robinson drove in a cross from the left and Meslier could only push the ball into the path of Pereira, who controlled on his knee before smashing into the net.
78' GOAL FOR LEEDS! A strange goal which Bamford flicked in after Summerville saw a backheel from Cooper's low cross blocked.
83' GREAT SAVE FROM MESLIER He will receive criticism over the two goals, but he saved a goal there diving to his left and tipping Willian's free kick onto the crossbar.
