The Rossoneri were looking for consistency and were unbeaten home and away against the Flying Donkeys since December 2005, winning 15 of the last 16 meetings.
Mattia Destro prodded a volley straight at Albano Bizzarri, who also smothered a Daniele Bonera finish from a charged down Alex free kick. Sergio Pellissier was skipped past Salvatore Bocchetti, forced Diego Lopez to parry and Luca Antonelli eventually had to clear off the line.
Riccardo Montolivo’s snapshot was going off target and Destro redirected it from close range. Montolivo was replaced by Keisuke Honda after the restart and the Japanese international made an immediate impact, smacking a fierce strike against the crossbar after just two minutes.
Chievo also threatened, as a Pellissier cross took a huge deflection off Alex and bounced inches wide of the far post.
Destro had timid penalty appeals for a Federico Mattiello nudge as he tried to reach a Jack Bonaventura cross, but Ezequiel Schelotto’s fine effort from a tight angle was palmed out from the near top corner.
Mattiello on his first Serie A start was decisive in preventing a Menez counter from being tapped in by Giampaolo Pazzini.
Moments later, Nigel de Jong sprinted back to fling himself in the path of a Riccardo Meggiorini strike, then Alberto Paloschi’s deflected attempt was fingertipped over the bar.
De Jong went off with a muscular problem, as did Montolivo earlier, and Alessio Cerci tested Albano Bizzarri at the near post, but Milan are still without an away victory since October 19.
