Fiorentina captain Davide Astori died of a sudden illness on Sunday morning, passing away in his sleep at the team's hotel.
The 31-years-old leaves behind long-term girlfriend Francesca Fioretti and a young daughter Vittoria.
"Fiorentina are heartbroken to announce that club captain Davide Astori has passed away suddenly," said a statement released by the club on Sunday morning.
"Out of respect for Astori’s family, we ask for privacy at this tragic time."
Italy's Serie A football league subsequently postponed all of Sunday's matches.
The Italian was staying with his team ahead of their scheduled away game at Udinese when he passed away.
During his career Astrori won 14 caps for his country and was a member of the 2013 Confederations Cup squad.
Following a six year spell as a Cagliari player, and after loan stays at Roma and Fiorentina, Astori moved to Florence two years ago.
