Full-time: AC Milan climb back up into second, temporarily at least, with this comfortable victory.
Castillejo rolls the ball into the path of Rebic, but he's immediately swarmed and eventually loses out before he can think about shooting.
- Yellow cardSamu CastillejoAC Milan
Yellow card! Totally needless, Castillejo is booked and that means he's suspended for the match at Juventus next week.
There will be FIVE minutes of added-time to play. This one is as good as over, surely.
Diaz almost marks his cameo with a goal but can't find the bottom corner he was looking for with a well-struck effort.
The ball strikes the arm of Ibrahimovic inside his own penalty as the veteran forward blocks a shot, but despite strong appeals for a spot-kick the referee isn't interested.
Milan sub: Brahim Diaz comes on for Calhanoglu for the last few minutes.
Oh, that is clever from Ibrahimovic. He flicks the ball over his head to find Castillejo, but he can only force a corner.
Benevento, to their credit, aren't prepared to give this up just yet. They're still pouring numbers forward in search of a goal, but they're just lacking that little bit of quality in the final third.
No penalty! Calabria is straight into the action and almost concedes a penalty for a clumsy challenge inside the penalty area, but he gets away with it.
- OffRafael LeãoAC Milan
- OnAnte RebicAC Milan
Treble Milan sub: Saelemaekers, Theo Hernandez and Leao are replaced by Samu Castilljeo, Davide Calabria and Ante Rebic.
There's one or two signs of fatigue setting in amongst the visiting players. Milan are preparing to bring on a couple of fresh faces as they look to put the gloss on a pleasing display.
As it is, Benevento are heading for their 17th defeat of the season. But one goal could change the complexion of the game and they still have 17 minutes to get it.
As it stands, Milan will move back up to second, pushing Juventus down to fifth. It's a really intriguing finale in Serie A in terms of the race for the top-four.
Benevento go close! It's not the visitors' night in front of goal as Insigne curls a shot just over the bar.
Lapadula heads agonisingly wide, but it wouldn't have counted as the offside flag is up.
That should do it, surely. Benevento have played well tonight but now find themselves with a mountain to climb.
GOAL! AC Milan 2-0 Benevento (Theo Hernandez): Ibrahimovic is repelled by Montipo for what feels like the 100th time this evening, but this time the visiting shot-stopper can only parry the shot into the path of Theo Hernandez, who is left with the easiest of finishes.
Saelemaekers swings and misses with an effort, he gets a second bite of the cherry but then scuffs an effort straight at a defender.
There's a concern over Montipo after making that save as he appears to have hurt his knee... but I think he's going to be OK.
Glorious chance for Ibrahimovic! A lovely little touch from the Swede takes him past a defender as he closes in on goal but again there's no way past Montipo, who saves with his knee!
Milan chance! This is a really open contest at the moment and you simply can't take your eyes off it! Calhanoglu goes close now, searching for the top corner he just gets too much curl on his strike as it drops wide.
Not far away for Benevento! Iago Falque with a fine strike... Donnarumma is at full stretch but the ball drifts wide of the far post.
Milan win a corner, it's flicked on by Ibrahimovic and Tomori heads straight at Montipo.
He's back on his feet and it's not nearly as bad as it looked. Replays show he was caught by the ball and not Lapadula's boot as first thought.
Hernandez is down - for the third time this evening - but this one looks quite serious. Lapadula tries an audacious overhead-kick but catches Theo in the face - and the shot went wide.
Another chance for Ibrahimovic! Having been denied by Montipo's left foot in the first half, Ibrahimovic now sees his powerful effort saved by the Benevento's right foot immediately after the restart.
Kick-off! The second half gets underway!
Before he's potentially sent off, Bennacer is replaced by Tonali at the break.
- End of 1st Half
Half-time: For all of their chances, Milan have just one goal to show for it and they hold a slender lead at the break.
Ibrahmovic is denied! A great chance for the Swede as he gets in behind the visiting defence but can't beat Montipo as the Benevento goalkeeper saves with his foot!
Milan find themselves in a five-vs-two situation on the break, as Bennacer sprints into space, he spreads it wide to Calhanoglu and his shot is deflected back into the path of Bennacer. His first-time effort is blocked. They ought to do better there.
Three minutes will be added on at the end of the first half.
Bennacer, already on a yellow card, clatters into Dabo and is fortunate not to receive his marching orders. He tries to pull out of the challenge early but can't avoid the collision.
The ball is set up perfectly for Depaoli to have a shot. His effort takes a heavy deflection, it could end up anywhere but it goes behind harmlessly for a Benevento corner.
- Yellow cardIsmaël BennacerAC Milan
Yellow card! Bennacer is booked for a cynical foul on Lapadula.
Save! A run on the overlap creates the space for Hernandez to shoot, he gets plenty of power in his effort but Montipo pushes it wide with a strong save.
Calhanoglu takes a beautiful touch to get the ball out of his feet, he looks up and floats a cross to the far post. Leao is the target but the ball skims the top of his head and goes out for a goal-kick.
Benevento find space down Milan's left but once again the delivery is dreadful. With just 10 minutes until half-time, Pippo Inzaghi will be pleased with how his side have performed, even if they have conceded a soft goal.
Set-pieces represent Benevento's best chance of a goal this evening and they win a corner. The delivery is beaten away at the near post by Donnarumma.
Hernandez is back on the pitch and immediately back on the ball - he drives forward down the left flank but is robbed by Glik, who makes a perfectly-timed challenge.
Hernandez is down again as Milan put the ball out of play. He's certainly been in the wars this evening - this time he's got a knee complaint.
If he nets today, Ibrahimovic would become the first player to score against 80 different teams in the top five European leagues since 2000.
Ibrahimovic is constantly drifting into a wide position, where Milan really don't need him. Having failed to get involved in the game so far, he's growing frustrated.
Opta stat: Calhanoglu is the fourth Turkish player able to score 50 goals in the top five European leagues since 1/1/2000, after Mevlüt Erdinç (92), Nihat Kahveci (76) and Halil Altintop (67).
After a frenetic opening, the game has slowed a little. It allows everyone to catch their breath.
Chance for Milan! Milan break - led by Kessie - but as they pour numbers forward, Leao fires straight at Montipo. He had a lot of the goal to aim at but he's clearly lacking in confidence and it was a really poor finish.
Save! Donnarumma, with his fingertips, denies Ionita's shot from distance. That was a good effort and is another warning shot to the hosts.
Chance for Milan! Montipo makes a fine save from Dalot's shot and Ibrahimovic scuffs the rebound straight at the goalkeeper. The Swede ought to have passed but was greedy and chose the wrong option.
That was Calhanoglu's ninth goal of the season, by the way. It's an important one.
Chance for the visitors! A first sighting of goal for the visitors, as a simple ball opens the Milan defence. Hernandez plays Lapadula onside but under pressure from the onrushing Donnarumma, the Benevento forward can't apply the finish!
It's a great start for Milan, but remember they took the lead against Sassuolo last week - a match they would go on to lose.
- GoalHakan ÇalhanogluAC Milan
GOAL! AC Milan 1-0 Benevento (Hakan Calhanoglu): The deadlock is broken! Kessie feeds Saelemaekers and continues his run, he lets the exchange pass run and Calhanoglu makes no mistake, slotting it past the visiting shot stopper.
A nervous moment in the Milan defence as Lapadula receives the ball left of the penalty area but his cross is so, so poor. The visitors need to make the most of such opportunities if they're to have any chance.
Benevento have five wins on the road this season and could prove a tough nut to crack this evening.
Milan have picked up just 11 points at home this calendar year. While their away form has been truly excellent, it's at the San Siro where they have struggled.
Kick-off! Benevento get us underway at San Siro, but after just 20 seconds, the referee calls play to a halt to allow Theo Hernandez to receive treatment after taking an elbow to the stomach. He will be fine, Pioli hopes.
FIVE minutes until kick-off! It's AC Milan versus Benevento in this crucial Serie A game for the Rossoneri. It's LIVE and it's NEXT!
With their rivals not in action until Sunday, Milan have the opportunity of reclaiming second place with a victory. Anything else would spell danger for their top-four hopes.
Pioli has been having his say regarding speculation of his future at the club: "The support from the technical area has never waned," he told the official club website. "We're talking about people, who know football and what a busy and long season can do, and that these difficult comes do come along. The board's presence helps us to keep our concentration. I've always had the support of the Club, of the owners and of the technical directors. Our aim is to do quality work and attain great results. We'll only take stock once the season is over. I'm convinced with our good work, by the team and by the support of the Club."
Did you know? AC Milan have lost each of their last two Serie A games and have not suffered three defeats in a row in the competition since September 2019.
Inter's victory officially ends Milan's Scudetto dream.
Pioli on Milan's current form, per the official club website: "The debates are ongoing and it's right that this is the case. We were brilliant for half a season and haven't been as good in the girone di ritorno. Right now, we need more attention and determination. We're conceding too many goal and scoring less than we should. This team has always shown that it is hungry to improve. A group as young as ours has to show hunger and a capacity to react in these difficult moments. "
Benevento coach Pippo Inzaghi returns to the San Siro searching for just a third win this calendar year. He will hope former Milan forward Gianluca Lapadula can produce the goods on a huge night for the relegation-threatened club.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic returns for Milan and boy do they need him at his best. Mario Mandzukic drops back to the bench and is joined by Ante Rebic, while Rafael Leao is restored to the team. Alessio Romagnoli makes his first start in two months.
