Barcelona suffered an astonishing 4-0 thumping against Athletic Bilbao, with Mikel San Jose’s strike from the halfway line the highlight of a momentous affair at San Mames.
But it was striker Aritz Aduriz who inflicted most damage on the Catalans, incredibly netting an hat-trick within 15 second half minutes to humiliate Barcelona, who conceded four goals in a match for the second time in four days.
Luis Enrique’s side came into the Super Copa first leg having beaten Sevilla 5-4 in Tuesday’s European Super Cup and the centre-back pairing of Thomas Vermaelen and Marc Bartra did nothing to solve those defensive issues, only heightening their backline insecurity.
Pedro started the match - amid continued speculation linking him with a move to the Premier League - but failed to make much of an impression alongside Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, as the European and Liga champions were overpowered by a rampant home side.

KEY EVENTS
12’ KEEPER MISTAKE: What was Ter Stegen doing? He fancies him as something of a Neuer-lite, but you'd never catch the Bayern man doing that! He scoops it high into the air and Eraso has his shot saved at the near post.
14’ GOAL! Athletic 1 Barcelona 0: UNBELIEVABLE! Ter Stegen comes off his line to head clear, but San Jose hits the strike from the halfway line and smashes a finish into the net with the keeper missing!
46’ GOOD STOP: Great save from Iraizoz! Messi gets his freekick up and over the wall, with his effort heading for the top corner, but the Athletic gets over and does what the Sevilla number one couldn't do midweek, and makes the stop.
51’ WOODWORK: PEDRO OFF THE CROSSBAR! A loose header from Laporte sets the Manchester United target through on goal, but the ball wouldn't come down quick enough for him and he strikes his shot off the underside of the bar.
54’ GOAL! Athletic 2 Barcelona 0: And there's the second goal! Sabin gets down the left side and crosses for Aduriz, who powers home a header past Ter Stegen.
64’ GOAL! Athletic 3 Barcelona 0: So, err, where are Barcelona? Athletic Bilbao are running riot! A cross is poorly dealt with and Aduriz sticks the finish away. They have a three goal lead!
70’ GOAL! Athletic 4 Barcelona 0: Athletic Bilbao are just scoring at will now. Aduriz sticks away the penalty, sending Ter Stegen the wrong way and he has his hat-trick!

TALKING POINT - Luis Enrique must be concerned by his side’s start to the season
Barcelona have conceded eight goals over the course of their last two matches, with the central defensive pairing of Marc Bartra and Thomas Vermaelen falling flat on its face at San Mames. So how concerned should Enrique be about his side’s defensive frailties ahead of their Liga bow next week? What can he do to stop the rot that seems to have infected his side over the summer?
MAN OF THE MATCH - Aritz Aduriz
When Mikel San Jose found the net from the halfway line - making the most of an ill-judged Marc Andre Ter Stegen foray off his line - it seemed unlikely that anyone would upstage him. But that’s exactly what Aritz Aduriz did, scoring a hat-trick against the best team in Europe. The striker gave Barcelona problems throughout the match and could have had even more than three goals.
