FULL-TIME: Athletic Bilbao 4-0 Barcelona

Three minutes of stoppage time to be played at the end of the match.

Barcelona had built something of a head of steam in their search for a goal that would at least give them a lifeline, but they have run out of ideas now. This game has been dead for a long time - in terms of the outcome.

YELLOW CARD: Carlos Gurpegi (Athletic Bilbao)

Athletic sub: Markel Susaeta OFF, Boveda ON.

Barcelona have endured a poor pre-season and after spending the season jetting all over the world playing games, they look tired. And they play their first league game next week!

Can Barcelona find a goal in the final few minutes of this game to at least give them some sort of lifeline heading into the second leg on Monday? They are coming forward on the attack.

Suarez is furious with the referee! He was appealing for a handall inside the area, but the handball is actually awarded against the Barca striker. How are those anger management classes going, Luis?

YELLOW CARD: Javier Mascherano (Barcelona)

This is what happens when Barcelona play Vermaelen. He's had a year-long pre-season since making the move to the Camp Nou. He's still not up to speed on this showing.

Of course, it should be noted that Barcelona have to come to the San Mames again to face Athletic Bilbao on the opening day of the Liga season in just a week's time. That'll be interesting.

Looks like Valverde might be settling for just the four goal lead. He has brought off Eraso - who has been very impressive - and has put on Gurpegi - a defender - in his place.

Athletic Bilbao sub: Javi Eraso OFF, Carlos Gurpegi ON.

Wow, even Messi is having an off night. Sandro manages to thread through the Barcelona number 10, who has time for the shot... but Laporte comes across to make the thumping block.

YELLOW CARD: Markel Susaeta (Athletic Bilbao)

This is damage limitation for Barcelona now. They have taken off Pedro surely to keep him good for the second leg, when they will need all the attackers that they can get!

Barcelona sub: Pedro Rodriguez OFF, Sando ON.

If Barcelona have hopes of overturning this defeat in Monday's second leg, they must probably score a goal before this game is out. A four goal deficit might be too much, even for Barca!

This is a disaster for Barcelona. Enrique is slumped in his chair. There are real problems at the back with this Barca team at the moment. They have conceded EIGHT goals in their last two games.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Athletic Bilbao 4 (70' - Aduriz) Barcelona 0. Athletic Bilbao are just scoring at will now. Aduriz sticks away the penalty, sending Ter Stegen the wrong way and he has his hat-trick!

PENALTY KICK TO ATHLETIC CLUB! Alves goes crashing in with an arm on his marker, and the home side have the chance to score a fourth against Barcelona! Incredible.

Athletic Bilbao sub: Sabin OFF, Inigo Lekue ON.

Barcelona have conceded seven goals in their last two games and look like they could concede an eighth in this game! Athletic are ripping them to shreds pretty much every time they come forward.

This has been a crazy game! The team that Enrique picked simply hasn't worked! They have been terrible at the back. The central defensive pairing of Bartra and Vermaelen have been awful.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Athletic Bilbao 3 (64' - Aduriz) Barcelona 0. So, err, where are Barcelona? Athletic Bilbao are running riot! A cross is poorly dealt with and Aduriz sticks the finish away. They have a three goal lead!

Barcelona sub: Sergi Roberto OFF, Ivan Rakitic ON.

The thing about this contest at the moment is that Athletic Bilbao look more likely to score a third than Barcelona look in scoring one! They have been so good on the rapid counter attack.

Enrique is in talks with his coaching staff on the Barcelona bench? How do they turn this one around? Their central defence has been terrible, but they need goals - so maybe Ivan Rakitic?

Tell you what, Pedro has to be careful here. He's already on a booking and he has come close to picking up another yellow card a number of times. He doesn't want to go out with a defeat AND a red card.

This would be the first time that Athletic have beaten Barcelona in Bilbao since 2006. This might be something of a glorified friendly match, but this win would go down in the history books.

Enrique didn't wait long into the second half before bringing on Iniesta, but in the end it didn't really matter. Within a minute or so of him coming on Aduriz doubles his side's advantage.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Athletic Bilbao 2 (54' - Aduriz) Barcelona 0. And there's the second goal! Sabin gets down the left side and crosses for Aduriz, who powers home a header past Ter Stegen.

Barcelona sub: Rafinho OFF, Andres Iniesto ON.

And now Iraizoz is called upon to make the low save from Messi! That was an outstanding stop from the Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper. Although Messi probably should have scored.

PEDRO OFF THE CROSSBAR! A loose header from Laporte sets the Manchester United target through on goal, but the ball wouldn't come down quick enough for him and he strikes his shot off the underside of the bar.

Barcelona have to scramble their defence together to prevent San Jose and Athletic Bilbao from scoring a second goal! It's the freekick into the area that cause them the problem once again.

How much longer will Enrique wait before throwing on Iniesta off the bench? They need a spark in the area, because at the moment they have nobody to provide the ammunition.

Barcelona just didn't look very Barcelona-like in this match. There has been a real lack of creativity in their midfield, and how many times have we said that over the years? Well, maybe a few times when Alex Song was there.

Pique was out really early for the start of the second half. He must have gulped down his half-time tea and rushed out to contemplate things ahead of the restart. Ponderous.

The second half is under way at the San Mames! Hopefully we have more goals from the halfway line to look forward to.

What did you make of the first half? Does Enrique need to make changes at the break? Is it time for Iniesta to come on? Can San Jose better himself by scoring from his own box? Tweet me!

HALF-TIME: Athletic Bilbao 1-0 Barcelona. San Jose's thunderthronker of a strike is what separates the two teams at the break, but Atheltic have been the better of the two sides. It wasn't a total fluke.

Great save from Iraizoz! Messi gets his freekick up and over the wall, with his effort heading for the top corner, but the Athletic gets over and does what the Sevilla number one couldn't do midweek, and makes the stop.

YELLOW CARD: Benat (Athletic). Pedro surges through the middle (yes, he's still a Barcelona player) and wins the freekick on the edge of the box. Freekick, and you know who is going to take it.

YELLOW CARDl Javi Eraso (Athletic Bilbao)

Adriano fires a cross into the box, but that wasn't really aimed at anyone and that somewhat sums up how Barcelona have played in this first half. Really shoddy stuff from them.

Valverde has a wry smile to himself as Barcelona play the perfect offside trap against his side. When the freekick came in, the entire team ran out leaving every Athletic player offside. Thankfully Ter Stegen stayed on his line this time.

YELLOW CARD: Pedro Rodriguez (Barcelona)

Maybe this performance from Athletic Bilbao shouldn't be too surprising. They had a great end to last season, undefeated in their last seven games, so this is them picking that form up again.

The tackle comes crashing in on Roberto, with the Barcelona player pleading for a freekick. But there was nothing wrong with that. The ball was won clearly. The San Mames loved that!

Deliveries into the penalty area from Barcelona have been poor too. This time Messi doesn't even get his cross past the first man. This has been a dismal half for the Liga champions.

It's almost as if Barcelona are too reliant on Messi... just putting it out there. I mean, he was involved in the Copa America all the way to the final, and this is already about his 100th game of the new season.

Oooft Suarez got clattered by his own goalkeeper there from a corner kick. And the former Liverpool striker isn't too happy with Ter Stegen about that! He has some choice words to say.

Barcelona just aren't getting the ball to their front three at the moment. Has Messi touched the ball more than five times? I wouldn't say so. Where's Pedro? Or Suarez for that matter?

This might be little more than just a glorified pre-season friendly, but it's certainly not being played like one. The intensity of this match has been frenetic, with both sides going for it.

Ah, it would seem Mascherano really has taken on the Busquets role. He's in the referee's ear at every opportunity trying to get opposition players booked. That's not very sporting, Javier.

If only Aduriz had six foot legs. The striker manages to take the cross down by De Marcos, but he can't quite gather the ball for the shot and Barcelona get back to make the challenge.

Athletic Bilbao are looking really good on the counter attack. Barcelona look as vulnerable as they have looked since Fernando Torres scored against them for Chelsea.

Good chance for Suarez! The former Liverpool man and serial biter gets in behind the Athletic backline, drawing the keeper off his line. But he can't quite squeeze his shot past Iraizoz.

Oh, there's Messi. He tries to dribble around several Athletic Bilbao players, in that way that he tends to, but Balenziaga stands up to the Argentine and makes the well-timed challenge.

Many claim that Barcelona's weakness is from set pieces, but they didn't concede from a single corner kick in La Liga last season. That's right. Not a single one. So, err, is that really a weakness?

It's Bartra and Vermaelen at the centre back positions for Barcelona tonight, which means that Mascherano is the one who is playing in what is known as the Sergio Busquets role.

Enrique does have Iniesta on the bench, and the way things are going now it might not be long until Enrique calls on the Spanish international to help turn this game around.

How much are Barcelona missing Xavi Hernandez? He only played a bit-part role at the club last season but it was an important one. Who do they have to take a grip of games like this now?

I'm not even sure if I have mentioned Lionel Messi's name? Have I? I don't think I have. I'm not entirely sure that he has touched the ball, actually. Utterly anonymous so far, is the Argentine.

Of course, it should be noted that Athletic Bilbao are a very good team. They are especially good at home and so they will have fancied their chances of taking a result here even before San Jose's stunner.

Enrique looks restless on the touchline. His team really haven't picked up where they leave off. They look tired, which might be down to the fact that they were playing at 2am on Tuesday night!

Barcelona just can't get going here. They are being really sloppy on the ball and have been lazy in their passing. Are we really sure that this is a Barcelona team we're watching right now?

What was Ter Stegen doing, though? He is known for coming off his line to act as something of a sweeper keeper but he didn't need to come out that far to make the header.

What do Charlie Adam and Mikel San Jose have in common - other than their natual Iberian good looks, of course? They have both scored stunners from the halfway line against their country's champions.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Athletic Club 1 (14 mins - Mikel San Jose) Barcelona 0. UNBELIEVABLE! Ter Stegen comes off his line to head clear, but San Jose hits the strike from the halfway line and smashes a finish into the net with the keeper missing!

Good chance for San Jose! The Athletic player is up for the corner kick and has a header cleared away just when it appeared to be creeping through on goal. Good stuff from Athletic.

What was Ter Stegen doing? He fancies him as something of a Neuer-lite, but you'd never catch the Bayern man doing that! He scoops it high into the air and Eraso has his shot saved at the near post.

Vermaelen - yes that's right, he is actually playing a game of football - takes a sore one in the back of the head from his own teammate, Bartra. Clearly trying to put him back on the stretcher - eliminate the competition.

Yikes! That was a big shoddy from Roberto in the centre of midfield. It's actually quite surprising that he's still at Barcelona this season, and that was a nervous pass from the youngster.

Ooooooh that had to be rather close. Adriano picks out the movement of Suarez, who tries to bend his run behind the Athletic backline - but he can't quite stay in line and the flag goes up.

Neymar is still out with a case of the mumps, and so that explains why Pedro has been selected in attack. Although Enrique opted for Rafinha in the European Super Cup game during the week.

I think that's the first time Athletic Bilbao have actually touched the ball. That's right, there is another side in this game. And with the match being played at the San Mames, they will fancy their chances too.

Of course, much of the focus on the Barcelona starting lineup will fall on Pedro Rodriguez - who may well he making his last appearance for the club tonight. Man Utd have dibs on him.

Barcelona are wearing that new away shirt of theirs which is pretty much fashioned out of a Catalan flag. I can't imagine they sell many of those in mainland Spain. Not a top seller.

And so Barcelona's defence of absolutely EVERYTHING starts. Luis Enrique's side were utterly sensational last season, but how can they possibly improve on that this term?

And we're under way at the San Mames! It's Athletic Bilbao against Barcelona in the first leg of the Spanish Super Copa.

Pre-match odds: Athletic Bilbao 6/1, Draw 7/2, Barcelona 9/20.
