Jose Mourinho: Manchester United players showed lack of class and desire

When asked if he got the reaction he wanted from his players, following the midweek's 2-1 defeat to Sevilla in the Champions League, he said:

"No. I didn't like the game... We didn't play the way I want the players to play. I didn't have a reaction from all of them, I had a reaction from some of them."

Mourinho said he was disappointed in the showing from the majority of his team, and subbed Luke Shaw off at half-time. He said his players had failed to heed his instructions in training on the pitch:

"When you don't have a minimum of six, seven players wanting to play, wanting responsibility, wanting to have the ball, to have the desire, really to play. One thing is to want to play, the other is to be on the pitch. It's difficult to have a good performance so I'm not happy with the performance at all.

"Attacking players hiding behind defenders, not wanting the ball in between the lines. Defenders playing square passes and taking 10, 12 passes to go from one line to another line, I have to feel frustrated."

Mourinho reserved praise for Scott McTominay, who he said worked for the team despite losing possession, and Nemanja Matic, contrasting his qualities with the rest of the side.

"I wanted more personality in the team. I felt Matic was an island of personality, of desire, of control, surrounded by... lack of personality, lack of class, lack of desire."

The criticism came after a press conference where he criticised United's recent past, and again singled out only Romelu Lukaku, David de Gea and Matic for praise..
