Will Grigg's late winner sent Wigan Athletic into the quarter-finals of the FA Cup with a 1-0 win over Manchester City.
City and Wigan Athletic enjoyed an even, frenetic first half with both sides enjoying chances, with Grigg, Ilkay Gundogan and Sergio Aguero all going close.

At the end of the half, Fabian Delph saw red for a wild lunge on Max Power, raising his foot. The sending-off led to a confrontation between both sets of players, carried on into the tunnel.
In the second half, City laboured in their attempts to break down Wigan, who seemed to recommit to the idea of simply keeping out their opponents.
With just over 10 minutes of normal time remaining, Grigg seized on a dreadful error from Kyle Walker, and fired an excellent low shot past Bravo as City's hopes of an quadruple were killed off.
It was as big an upset as Wigan's 1-0 win over City in the 2013 FA Cup final.

FA Cup quarter-final draw

  • Sheffield Wednesday or Swansea City v Rochdale or Tottenham Hotspur
  • Manchester United v Brighton & Hove Albion
  • Leicester City v Chelsea
  • Wigan Athletic v Southampton
Ties to be played March 16-19

TALKING POINT Guardiola has to agree it was a red card

It would be a risible, self-serving disgrace if Pep Guardiola complains about the red card that Fabian Delph received. Delph's studs were up, and it was a reckless, violent challenge. This is precisely the kind of challenge that Guardiola claims should be stamped out of football. In this game, it was.

MAN OF THE MATCH: Dan Burn (Wigan Athletic)

Everyone played their part, especially Grigg with his superb late intervention, but Burn was the man at the back who kept Wigan in the game throughout. It was a team achievement, but Burn led by example and kept his opponents at bay.

KEY EVENTS

  • 12' - GRIGG SAVE - Grigg is slipped in down the inside left, who scoots past Stones, and fires a rising shot into the side-netting. The crowd on one side of the stadium briefy think he's put them ahead.
  • 35' - GUNDOGAN CHANCE - Danilo flicks a clever ball to Gundogan, who spins his marker, and fires a shot just over the crossbar from a tight angle.
  • 45+1' - WALTON SAVE - Aguero takes a touch around a defender, leaving Burn behind, and into the box. He slams a shot across Walton, and he palms it behind for a corner.
  • 45+2' - RED CARD! Power breaks from deep, and Delph flies into him with a wild lunge. It's not too awful, but the ref changes his mind and goes from yellow, to give a red card. Guardiola can't complain - all he talks about it protecting players.
  • 73' - DANILO CROSS - Gundogan backheels for Danilo's run into the box, the full back drives it across goal, and Aguero is just too far away.
  • 79' - GOAL! Wigan Athetic 1-0 Manchester City. Grigg scores - Grigg is released down the inside left. Walker lifts his foot off the ball and allows Grigg a free run. The striker fires a low shot from the edge of the box past Bravo.
