Sofiane Boufal struck with three minutes remaining to earn Southampton a replay at Tottenham after a 1-1 draw in their FA Cup fourth-round clash at St Mary's.
Spurs looked to be heading into the fifth-round draw after Son Heung-min struck against the run of play in the 58th minute after fine work from Giovani Lo Celso.
However, Boufal’s brilliant finish denied Spurs their first back-to-back victories since Jose Mourinho's first three games in charge, and ensured the tie will be settled in north London.
Both managers named strong teams, quite unusual at this stage of the competition, but there was no place for Christian Eriksen in the Spurs squad, as a potential move to Inter Milan nears, and the quality of the players out there showed as both teams created openings in the first half, with Son the first to go close, drilling wide from a good position.
Spurs then thought they had taken the lead through Lo Celso, but the linesman's flag denied them, with the Argentine's well-placed finish taking a nick off Son, in an offside position, on the way in. VAR confirmed the decision was a correct one.
Saints then went close as in-form Danny Ings hooked the ball towards goal, only for youngster Japhet Tanganga to get back and head the ball off the line.
After the break, both teams remained evenly matched and it appeared one moment of magic was going to win the contest, and that looked to have come via the drive and determination of Lo Celso, who picked the ball up in his own half, skipped past three strong challenges, the ball found its way to Son who then picked his spot, firing into the bottom corner.
Ings twice went close to a leveller as it appeared Spurs would stand firm, only for Boufal to come off the bench to meet Ing’s pullback to fire his first of the season into the roof of the net to earn Saints a replay that Spurs especially do not nearly need.

TALKING POINT

Missed opportunity for Spurs. Not since Jose Mourinho’s first three games in charge have Spurs won back-to-back matches, but having nervously got the better of Norwich at the weekend, they looked on course to secure an impressive victory against a side who had won six of their last eight in all competitions. With so much still to play for this season – the Champions League returns next month and the top-four is still a realistic target – now would have been the right time to hit top form – for 87 minutes, Spurs looked to have got the job done, but Saints late equaliser further emphasises just how much work is still to do.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Giovani Lo Celso. Once again, the Argentine is the standout Spurs star. His drives from midfield are behind so many Spurs attacks, with his strength and power, for one who appears not all that imposing, particularly impressive. Spurs simply must take up the option to make his stay in London permanent, before other swoop in.

KEY MOMENTS

8’ - WIDE! So close from Heung-Min Son! Great hold-up play from Dele Alli before he plays a delightful pass through to Son. The angle is tight, Son goes for the far corner, but drills just wide.
28’ - OFFSIDE! Lo Celso has the ball in the net but it is ruled out for offside. We go to VAR... NO GOAL! It is unlucky for Spurs as Lo Celso's well-placed finish from the edge of the box just clips the heel of Son on its way in, with the South Korean in an offside position.
33’ - SAVE! What a save from Gunn! Alli threads a lovely pass through for Lucas, the Brazilian looks certain to score, fires for the bottom former, but Gunn sticks out a leg and just gets enough on it to divert the ball wide.
35’ - OFF THE LINE! Tanganga to the rescue for Spurs. Ings hooked the long bouncing ball towards goal after rounding Hugo Lloris, but the youngster was back on the line to head clear.
54’ - CLOSE! Just wide from Ings. Obafemi again with the low cross, Ings just gets a flick on it with his right boot, but the ball fizzes across the face of goal and wide.
58’ - GOOOOOOAAAALLLLLL!!! Southampton 0-1 Tottenham. Somewhat against the run of play, on the counter, Son gives Spurs the lead.

63’ - CLOSE! Almost an amazing goal as Lo Celso clips a sumptuous pass onto the right boot of Son, who volleys just over.
83’ - WIDE! As good a chance as Ings has had all match. Redmond with the cross from the right, Ings gets up highest, but cannot find the target with his head.
87’ - GOOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLL!!!! Southampton 1-1 Tottenham. Boufal smashes a wonderful finish into the net to level things up here! It had been coming. Ings in the thick of it again as he pulls wide, picks out the run of Boufal with an excellent pullback, with the Moroccan firing high into the net with his left foot. His first goal of the season.
