KICK OFF! Liverpool get this tie underway.
Villa U23 coach Mark Delaney: "There are excited boys in there. They're looking forward to it. This is the biggest opportunity you can have.... We're missing some of the under-23 players who were training with the first team."
One for Villa fans to enjoy: match report from the last time at Villa Park against the Premier League champions.
More from Klopp on Jota and Matip: “It will still take time. He (Jota) is still wearing a brace, so that means he is still a few weeks away from team training.” And on Matip’s race to be fit for the Man United PL match: “Until the United game we still have nine days around about, so we try. He is in a good way but if it will be United or a few days later, I don’t know. After the United game we will obviously play every three days again, so I think that’s pretty sure, but for the United game, we will see.”
Some words from Jurgen Klopp below. He is claiming Liverpool are unlikely to sign a central defender in January as cover amid an injury crisis at the Premier League club.
In contrast, Liverpool name a relatively strong line-up. There are six changes from the loss at Southampton with Caoimhin Kelleher given a run out in goal. However, Mo Salah, Sadio Mane, skipper Jordan Henderson, Georginio Wijnaldum and Fabinho are all included.
As has been heavily reported, Villa are almost unrecognisable. Their starting XI contain seven U23 players and four U18s. The hosts have had to go with their youth after nine senior players and five staff tested positive for Covid-19.
