TUESDAY’S BIG STORIES

Neymar admits…well, he admits something

Humility and self-awareness aren’t two things you associate with Neymar. Humility and self-awareness aren’t two things that he has really expressed here, but it’s pretty much as close as you’re going to get from him.
He pretty much went to ground after the World Cup, taking the holiday that anyone who’d worked for a high-pressured month deserves, but here he is, back and defending himself. Defending his performances in Russia, defending how he conducted himself, and explaining a little bit too. He said:
Kick in the spine. Stomp on the foot. You may think I overreact, and sometimes I do. But for real? I suffer on the pitch. But you have no idea what I go through outside of it. When I leave without talking to the press it’s not because I only like winning but because I still don’t know how to disappoint you. When I act like a brat, it isn’t because I’m a spoiled child but because I still haven’t learned to deal with my frustrations. There’s still a boy inside of me. Sometimes it dazzles the world. Other times, it pisses every one off. And my fight is to keep this boy alive. But inside of me, not inside the field.”
Some of which is fair enough. And this admission was quite interesting too:
You may think I’ve fallen too much. But the reality is I did not fall, I crumbled. And that hurts more than anyone stepping on your post-op ankle.”
Still, then we move into self-pitying territory…
I took time to accept your criticism. I took time to look at myself in the mirror and become a new man. But now I’m here, with my heart wide open. I fell. But only those who fall, can get up. You can keep throwing rocks at me. Or you can throw your rocks away and help me get up. Because when I do get up, buddy, the whole country gets up with me.”
But you can’t have everything.
And then comes the startling revelation that this is all part of an advert for a popular men’s grooming company. Which doesn’t exactly do anything for the idea that Neymar will just say anything he’s told to or anything that’s convenient for him.

The promoted teams are going to win the league

Well, maybe not quite that. But boy they’re looking in pretty good shape. Wolves have tapped up Uncle Jorge Mendes and signed Rui Patricio and Joao Moutinho, Cardiff are managed by Neil Warnock and frankly anything could happen there, and now Fulham are making their moves.
Following Jean-Michael Seri and Andre Schurrle through the door is Aleksandar Mitrovic, returning to the club on a permanent basis after winning their hearts on loan last season. And following him will be Alfie Mawson, set to sign for a relative song (£15m) from Swansea, meaning they’ve already had a pretty good transfer window indeed.

“I’m happy to the moon and back,” Mitrovic said. “I’m very glad and happy and proud to finally be here. I have love for the fans. They’re amazing and I have a really good connection with them. This is a big club and last year we made history. We want to keep making big things, and I think we can go far.”
Remarkably, it’s not out of the question that at least two of the promoted clubs could finish in the top half. That being remarkable is a sad indication of how things are in modern football, but here we are.

He’s here

The news that Cristiano Ronaldo has arrived for training at Juventus should really just be ‘man shows up for work’, but it’s notable because a) it’s Ronaldo and b) this still doesn’t feel entirely real.
Still, that’s not half as weird as it will be when he actually plays a game.

IN OTHER NEWS

Leo Messi teasing his dog. A thousand Spanish defenders sympathise.

HEROES AND ZEROS

Hero: Anderson

Sometimes careers just don’t go to plan. That might not necessarily be the fault of the person in question. Sometimes, players get unlucky. Anderson, for example, probably didn’t expect to be 30 years old and playing for Adana Demirspor in the Turkish second division, but here he is. And, quite understandably, he’s not exactly delighted by it, but we do have some respect for him quite clearly displaying his not delightedness here. Good luck mate, hope it’s tolerable.

Zero: Charlie Stillitano

Charlie Stillitano, the chief executive of Relevant Sports, the organisers of the International Champions Cup and therefore the bloke running Manchester United’s pre-season tour, might be forgiven for feeling a little irked that Jose Mourinho basically told people not to watch any of the games. But no.

“I understand his point,” he told ESPN FC. “He wants even his players who have personal commitments to be here. And I read into that he wants the best for the fans and the best for us and of course the best for him. He wants his full team.”
CHARLIE. MATE. DON’T INDULGE HIM. DON’T GIVE HIM THE IDEA THAT ANY OF HIS WHINGING IS JUSTIFIED. JUST DON’T. PLEASE.

HAT TIP

I think it was mixed. If I look back, I think I will be disappointed in my performances but I think for my first year, if you look at the whole, I didn’t do too bad. I scored goals, I helped the team, I played a lot and I felt like an important player. But I also know I can take my game to the next level and there’s a lot more for me to give. I already feel a million times better this season. I understand what the coach is saying and what’s required. It took a lot of energy last season: the language, settling in and the style of play.
Toni Duggan was one of a few England players to move abroad in the last year. She talks to Samuel Marsden over on ESPN about her first year with Barcelona.

RETRO CORNER

A very happy 42nd birthday to Paulo Wanchope. Here he is saying hello to the Premier League by absolutely mugging off Manchester United, in one of those goals where he runs a long way but doesn’t actually really beat anyone in particular.

COMING UP

Couple of Champions League qualifiers for all you completists out there: Hapoel Beer Sheva play Dinamo Zagreb, for example. But, yeah, just hang on for another few days.
Tomorrow’s Warm-Up will be brought to you by Alex Chick, who never misses Hapoel Beer Sheva v Dinamo Zagreb.
