Match report
Tottenham won the League Cup final against Chelsea 2-1 thanks to Jonathan Woodgate's header in extra-time at Wembley.
The Blues took the lead late in the first half from Didier Drogba's curled free-kick before Dimitar Berbatov's calmly-taken penalty levelled matters on 70 minutes.
Spurs attacked Chelsea from the start and were given a helping hand for their first chance only seconds in when Juliano Belletti passed to the unoccupied middle of the pitch.
Robbie Keane raced onto the ball and flew towards goal before striking a shot that returning Chelsea captain John Terry dived to block and divert just past the post for a corner.
The team in white enjoyed the ball for the first half-hour and struck the woodwork on nine minutes when Aaron Lennon's deep corner was headed back across goal by Chimbonda. The ball looped up and back down onto the bar.
Seconds later another cross found Berbatov completely unmarked in the centre of the box, but the Bulgaria striker headed wide of the mark.
Malbranque hit a shot wide before a trio of free-kicks for Chelsea, the first of which from Frank Lampard was blocked by Woodgate.
Drogba took over for the next effort, curled half-a-foot wide of the post, but minutes later had another chance from the same distance after Didier Zokora fouled him and earned a booking in the process.
The Ivory Coast striker left the recalled Paul Robinson standing with his shot, whipped low inside the post to stun the buoyant Spurs fans into silence.
The goal signalled the success of Chelsea's policy of nullifying Tottenham's pacy moves forward and earning greater territorial possession for the Blues.
Keane immediately found space in the penalty area at the other end but saw his shot blocked by Petr Cech and Spurs went in at the break a goal down after Berbatov lost his footing late in the half, allowing the Czech to gather.
The second half did not initially possess the same fluidity as the first as Chelsea's slick outfit again did their job well.
The first chance fell for them when Lampard tackled Jenas and the ball flew out to Drogba on the left, whose cross was just too high for the unmarked Wright-Phillips on the right and Nicolas Anelka could only direct the final header into Robinson's arms.
Chelsea
Petr Cech
Still at Chelsea, but isn't guaranteed to start this match ahead of Thibaut Courtois. Not sure how longer he will at Stamford Bridge if he continues to play reserve behind the Belgian goalkeeper. Made an error in coming off his line as Jonathan Woodgate headed the winner in extra-time in 2008. Will hope to avoid a repeat this time. If selected.
Juliano Belletti
The right-back spent three years at Chelsea between 2007-2010 after leaving Barcelona. Retired in 2011 after a spell with Brazilian side Fluminense. Won the Premier League, FA Cup and Community Shield at Chelsea. Was also a runner-up in the 2008 Champions League final when Chelsea lost on penalties to Manchester United. At least he scored his.
John Terry
Like Cech, continues to produce some of his very best form for Chelsea. The Chelsea captain, 34, will lead them in Sunday's final. Already likely to extend his stay at the club for another season. Terry has already won the League Cup twice at Chelsea. And is bidding for a third here under Jose Mourinho.
Ricardo Carvalho
Now 36, the central defender can be found at Monaco these days. Has enjoyed a stunning career with Porto, Chelsea and Real Madrid.
Wayne Bridge
The left-back retired from football aged only 34 last summer after a season with Reading. Spent six years with Chelsea between 2003-2009 before spells with West Ham, Sunderland, Brighton and Reading. Also won 36 caps for England, but is infamously recalled for an alleged incident involving former team-mate Terry and his old girlfriend.
John Obi Mikel
Still at Chelsea, but is injured with a knee injury for this final. Joins Nemanja Matic in a viewing capacity. Matic is suspended for Jose Mourinho's side. Still only 27, Mikel joined the London club in 2006.
Frank Lampard
Club legend Lampard departed Stamford Bridge last summer as the club's top goalscorer with 211 goals in 13 years at the club, but returned to haunt them when he scored for Manchester City against them earlier this season. Set to join Major League Soccer side New York City at the end of the season.
Michael Essien
The Ghana midfielder is playing for Milan at the moment after making 168 appearances for Chelsea between 2005-2014. Was loaned out to Real Madrid for the season 2012/13 season before making permanent his switch to Italian football a year ago.
Shaun Wright-Phillips
Joined Chelsea from Manchester City in 2005 after six years with City. Rejoined City in 2008 for three years before agreeing a deal with QPR. Now 33, the former England winger is struggling to hold down a game with QPR. But has apparently rejected loan moves to Blackburn, Bolton and Charlton.
Nicolas Anelka
Last linked with a club in Indonesia, but Anelka, now 35, turned out for an astonishing 13 clubs after making his debut for Paris Saint-Germain in 1996. Like Terry, failed to score in the penalty shoot-out with Manchester United in the 2008 Champions League final.
Didier Drogba
Another iconic figure at Chelsea who returned to the club from Galatasaray during the close season having left in 2012. Probably won't start, but could well appear from the bench. Will forever be recalled as the man who scored the winning penalty for Chelsea in the 2012 Champions League final against Bayern Munich.
Substitutes:
Joe Cole (replaced Mikel on 98 minutes)
Cole can be found at Aston Villa this weather in the midst of a relegation battle. A natural attacking midfielder, Cole left Chelsea for Liverpool in 2010 and has spent time at Lille and his old club West Ham. Has 56 England caps to his name, but his career has also been blighted by a serious of injuries.
Michael Ballack (replaced Essien on 88 minutes)
Ballack retired from football in 2012 after a golden career in which he won trophies galore with Bayern Munich and Chelsea. Scored 42 goals from 98 games for Germany's national side. Pops up as a pundit now and again on Sky Sports.
Salomon Kalou (replaced Wright-Phillips on 72 minutes)
Made 156 appearances for Chelsea between 2006-2012 before spending two years at Lille between 2012-2014. Now turning out for Hertha Berlin.
Manager: Avram Grant
Led Ghana at the African Cup of Nations earlier this month where his team lost a penalty shoot-out to Ivory Coast in the final. Replaced Jose Mourinho early in the 2007/08 season, but saw his side lose the League Cup final, the Champions League final and the Premier League title on the final day of the season as his spell at Stamford Bridge painted him as a nearly man. Has since managed Portsmouth, West Ham United and Partizan Belgrade.
Tottenham Hotspur
Paul Robinson
Robinson currently plies his trade in goal for Blackburn Rovers. He amassed 41 caps for England and remains a highly popular figure at the Lane. Now 35, he still has a few years left in him – especially considering Tottenham have 43-year-old Brad Friedel in their squad.
Alan Hutton
Aston Villa's Alan Hutton attempts to block the cross from Arsenal's Nacho Monreal
Hutton has had somewhat or a renaissance at Villa this year. He fell out of favour under Paul Lambert but has since emerged as first choice right-back.
Jonathan Woodgate
A lavishly talented defender but horribly injury prone. Left Tottenham for Stoke in 2011 but his injury problems continued. Has since moved to Middlesbrough where he has made 50 league appearances. Injuries continue to blight his career.
Ledley King
Chronic knee trouble meant an early retirement for King but is an ambassador for the club. Was an exceptional player who should have really played for an elite-level club and would have done were it not for the aforementioned knee injuries. King was booked eight times in his whole Tottenham career.
Pascal Chimbonda
Chimbonda’s career has taken on a nomadic turn since the 2008 League Cup final – he has represented seven clubs since then and was briefly on the books of non-league Market Drayton Town in July 2013.
Aaron Lennon
Lennon is still on Tottenham’s books but is currently on loan at Everton. He fell out of favour first under Tim Sherwood and then Mauricio Pochettino after a sustained run in the team under Andre Villas-Boas. A frustrating figure capable of brilliance and inconsistency in equal measure.
Jermaine Jenas
Currently without a club. He suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament during a QPR training session in April 2014 and is currently recuperating. Has 21 England caps to his name and is still only 32.
Didier Zokora
Left Tottenham in 2009 and has since represented Sevilla, Trabzonspor and Akhisar Belediyespor, whose coach is Roberto Carlos. He amassed an impressive 121 caps for the Ivory Coast.
Steed Malbranque
The 35-year-old is currently flying high in Ligue Un with Lyon, who are top and two points ahead of Paris Saint Germain. Has also had spells at Sunderland and Saint-Étienne.
Robbie Keane
Moved to Liverpool in the summer of 2008 but returned to White Hart Lane after one seaosn at Anfield. He struggled to recapture his best form and had loan spells at Celtic and West Ham before moving to LA Galaxy in 2011. Briefly returned to the Premier League with Aston Villa in 2012, where he scored three goals in six games. Has won the MLS Cup on three occasions – 2011, 2012 and 2014.
Dimitar Berbatov
Moved to Manchester United in 2008 for a fee of £30.75 million. Despite scoring 48 goals in 108 league games for United he was never really deemed an automatic starter of a success. Since moved to Fulham in 2012 and then on to Monaco in 2014.
Subs:
Younes Kaboul (Replaced Robbie Keane on 102 minutes)
Still at the club but not first choice despite being club captain.
Teemu Tainio (replaced Steed Malbranque on 75 minutes)
Retired after spells at Sunderland, Birmingham City, New York Red Bulls and HJK Helsinki.
Tom Huddlestone (replaced Chimbonda on 61 minutes)
Moved to Hull City in 2013, where he has become a mainstay in the team.
Manager: Juande Ramos
Sacked after leading Tottenham to their worst-ever start to a league campaign the following season. In December 2008 he became Real Madrid manager as his stock remained high in Spain. However, his deal was a short-term one until the end of the season. Left his position as Dnipro manager at the end of last season.
