Football news - Paper Round: Chelsea reject Willian offer from Barca, Arsenal want Suarez and Banega
Chelsea have rejected a bid from Barcelona for Willian whilst Arsenal want Denis Suarez and Ever Banega. It's Friday's Paper Round.
Chelsea reject Barca offer for Willian
We begin with a report from The Telegraph that says Chelsea have rejected a bid worth £50 million for Willian from Barcelona. It was widely reported on Thursday evening that the Spanish champions had offered a deal containing winger Malcom and cash which equated to £50 million. However the Telegraph report says that Chelsea have rejected that as they feel the Brazilian is worth more.
Paper Round's view: This is an understandable move from Barcelona: they don't have much money but they have an asset they want to get rid of. However Chelsea have a winger arriving in the summer in the shape of Christian Pulisic, the cash would be far more useful for them.
Arsenal want Banega and Suarez
We now have a second report from The Telegraph which says Arsenal are interested in signing Denis Suarez and Ever Banega on loan in January. The news comes after Unai Emery admitted the club would have to sign players on loan rather than buy permanently.
Paper Round's view: This is a tough situation for Arsenal at the moment. They've made some big financial decisions in the past few years and now they're paying the price for it. Signing Suarez and/or Banega on loan would address an immediate need (but they would still need a centre-back) and could potentially avoid making an expensive January mistake.
Man Utd increasingly open to Solskjaer long-term
Meanwhile it is reported in The Mirror that Manchester United are increasingly open to the idea of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer managing the team long-term. Solskjaer initially took the job on an interim basis but he has impressed thus far. The club still want Mauricio Pochettino as their first-choice but are more open to Solskjaer.
Paper Round's view: This is hardly surprising after such a good start for Solskjaer. However there is still a long way to go in this experiment and the picture will be much clearer after Sunday's game with Tottenham Hotspur. Win that and things might start to really shift...
City want £50m Rice
And we end with a report that says Premier League champions Manchester City are interested in signing Declan Rice from West Ham. City boss Pep Guardiola is wary of Fernandinho's ageing legs and wants to freshen up his midfield. He has watched Rice and considers him an option although West Ham could demand £50 million.
Paper Round's view: Rice is a very talented young player but it would still be a huge ask for him to come straight into this team and replace a player as crucial as Fernandinho. In the future he could certainly do it but right now that would be a big step. It would be very interesting to see him try and tackle that.
