Harry Kane, Bernardo Silva and Victor Osimhen: What Europe’s biggest clubs need this transfer window

The European transfer window may not have officially opened yet but that hasn’t stopped some clubs already getting down to business.

The season came to a close on Saturday with the Champions League final but clubs across the continent are now scurrying to get the vast majority of their business done, in order to help new players acclimatise to their new surroundings and teammates.

With that in mind we got in touch with our offices in France, Spain, Germany and Italy to find out what some of Europe’s biggest clubs might need.

Here’s what they said.

League champions Barcelona are a complete unknown at the moment because everything depends on their economic situation. They need to sell a lot to be able to make transfers and contract renewals.

Ansu Fati, Ferran Torres and Ousmane Dembele are the three names that could bring in the most money. Xavi wants a midfielder to replace Sergio Busquets and it seems that Ilkay Gundogan is the one who is most likely to come, but he hasn't said anything about his future yet despite being out of contract with Manchester City. It has not been made official yet but Inigo Martínez will likely also come to strengthen the defence.

Real Madrid have been one of the fastest teams to act and have already announced the departure of several players such as Marco Asensio, Eden Hazard and Karim Benzema as well as the signings of Brahim Diaz, Fran García and Jude Bellingham.

The renewals of Nacho, Luka Modric and Dani Ceballos should be announced shortly and not much else is expected to happen. Madrid need a striker and Harry Kane is the most suitable, but Florentino Perez is not sure about spending 100 million this summer and then again next year to sign Kylian Mbappe who, although he would come for free, must pay him a large salary and bonuses for the signing. There is of course a chance that Mbappe could come this summer but at the moment that doesn’t feel too likely.

Atletico Madrid ended the season in great form with Antoine Griezmann coming off an excellent campaign. Atleti need to strengthen everywhere really because in La Liga they are among the top three, but not able to compete in Europe, so more depth is required.

In attack they have renewed Alvaro Morata and of course Joao Felix returns from his loan at Chelsea, although it is not clear what will happen to the Portuguese forward because Simeone does not seem to trust him. The economic situation is not the best, so if they manage to sell Felix they will be able to try and make a big signing. While there is talk of Lee Kang-in from Mallorca, he would be more of a squad player, and besides he has been heavily linked to Paris Saint-Germain in the past few days.

What Bayern Munich lack most is a world-class striker. After the departure of Robert Lewandowski, those responsible for signings intended to compensate by playing without a classic number nine. But especially in the big games - in which Eric Maxim Choupo Moting was missing due to injury or was out of form - it became obvious how much the Munich team needs a powerful player who is strong in the box.

Serge Gnabry was the best attacking player with 17 goals. The bosses want a striker; most recently Victor Osimhen, Dusan Vlahovic and Kane were names that circulated. But due to what is expected to be a high fee, a transfer could be difficult. A second problem is that Bayern lacks a deep number six, who would close the gaps in front of the defence and allow Joshua Kimmich more space up front. Declan Rice seems to be the chosen candidate but it is unclear whether he wants to leave England.

For Borussia Dortmund, it will be a matter of coping with the bitter disappointment of losing the championship in the last match. It will be a big challenge to replace Jude Bellingham who has been the main leader in the team - it will probably not be possible to find a replacement who can fill the gap.

Felix Nmecha, who has also been linked with a move to England, and Ilkay Gundogan have been considered as replacements. Of course, Gundogan would be a great reinforcement and an emotional return, but a transfer still seems a bit unlikely given his options.

Lionel Messi is leaving, Sergio Ramos also, Neymar may as well. Paris needs a team, a real one, not just a collection of superstars. But, before all that, a coach is required as they don’t have one yet because Christophe Galtier is reportedly on his way out but not yet replaced.

Bernardo Silva and Gundogan would be perfect because they are talented but team players on top of that. Marcus Thuram is also on the list of sporting director Luis Campos, who had a difficult transfer window last year. Will it be better this year? This is the main question and we don’t know the answer yet.

Talking about Napoli is complicated: owner Aurelio De Laurentiis is still looking for a new coach after Luciano Spalletti's farewell. Of course, if Kim Min-jae goes to Manchester United, Napoli will have to find a new centre-back. A new right-back will also be useful for some rotation with skipper Giovanni Di Lorenzo. But this transfer window will logically depend on Victor Osimhen: if he leaves, Napoli will need a new striker as Giovanni Simeone and Giacomo Raspadori will not be enough.

Milan Skriniar could go to PSG, Stefan De Vrij's contract expires on June 30th: so a new centre-back is therefore needed. There are two targets: Kalidou Koulibaly and Yann Aurel Bisseck, 22, of Aarhus.

In midfield the dream is Sergej Milinkovic-Savic but deals with Lazio are never easy. Inter also like Davide Frattesi (seven goals this year in Serie A with Sassuolo). CEO Beppe Marotta will try to keep Romelu Lukaku one more year (there will be talks with Chelsea), Edin Dzeko will leave to join Fenerbahce. The question is: does Inter need another striker? Probably yes, but first they have to sell - Joaquin Correa perhaps?

First of all, AC Milan definitely need a new striker, maybe two because Zlatan Ibrahimovic has already said goodbye and both Ante Rebic and Divock Origi could leave, plus next season Olivier Giroud can't play as much as he was relied upon this year.

There are three main targets at the moment, in this order: Marcus Thuram (priority), Gianluca Scamacca and Mehdi Taremi. Stefano Pioli also wants a new right winger: eyes are on Samuel Chukwueze (Villarreal) and Christian Pulisic (Chelsea). Daichi Kamada should sign soon. Furthermore, due to Ismael Bennacer's injury, AC Milan need a central midfielder (there are some rumours about Ruben Loftus-Cheek). Finally, a centre-back could be useful. A busy summer indeed! And all of this now without sporting director Paolo Maldini.

For Juventus it will be a low-profile transfer window. The Bianconeri are trying to convince Adrien Rabiot to stay (the midfielder's contract is expiring). Angel Di Maria is gone, Dusan Vlahovic has offers from the Bundesliga (Bayern) and the Premier League (Manchester United, Tottenham?), Arkadiusz Milik may not be signing permanently and several top clubs have their eyes on Federico Chiesa.

We could soon be witnesses of a revolution of a sort given the various issues surrounding the club. A defender will also be useful because Daniele Rugani could leave and this will be Leonardo Bonucci’s last season.

Houssem Aouar was Mourinho's first "gift" in midfield, but more will come. The main objective is a striker, for two reasons: Tammy Abraham is injured and will be out for a long time, plus Andrea Belotti is struggling to remain a top-level striker (no goals this year in Serie A).

The Giallorossi are close to Gianluca Scamacca, and are also looking for a centre-back, with the signing of Evan N'Dicka from Eintracht Frankfurt imminent.
