It's all over in Rennes as the spoils are shared in a pulsating opening game of this Europa Conference League group. Spurs are perhaps a tad fortunate to leave France with a point after a night that did little to answer the questions from the loss to Crystal Palace. It finishes 2-2.

94'

Laborde volleys a cross into the box, a stunning bit of skill, but none of his team-mates had anticipated it and Spurs survive.

94'

One last chance for Rennes as the red shirts pour forward. The crowd roar their side on.

93'

Dele Alli has done well since coming on put his foot on the ball and get Spurs into some dangerous areas.

91'

Spurs whip a cross into the box after working a free-kick wide, but Rodon can't quite turn his header on target.

90'

There will be five minutes of added time. More than enough for one of these teams to grab a winner.

87'

Spurs do well to clear their lines from the set-piece and win a foul to try and take the sting out of the game as it nears its conclusion. This has been a fascinating match, and a very worrying one for any watching Tottenham fans.

86'

A shot from range is deflected wide and Rennes throw bodies forward for the corner.

80'

The game is wide open now, with space at both ends. There are going to be more chances, of that there's little doubt.

79'

Ndombele’s race is run and on comes Dele Alli.

78'

Emerson bursts down the right and shoots over from an angle.

  • Pierre-Emile Højbjerg

75'

Rennes go close again as Guirassy shoots over from an angle. Spurs are in trouble here.

  • Gaëtan Laborde
GoalGaëtan LabordeStade RennaisGOOOAAALLL!!! Rennes have the lead and you can’t say it’s undeserved. A Sulemana shot from distance is parried straight back into trouble by Gollini and Laborde tucks home into an empty net. 2-1!

GOOOAAALLL!!! Rennes have the lead and you can’t say it’s undeserved. A Sulemana shot from distance is parried straight back into trouble by Gollini and Laborde tucks home into an empty net. 2-1!

70'

That’s a chance! Emerson flicks on a looping ball on the edge of the box and it drops on the volley for Hojbjerg who shoots straight at the keeper.

68'

A teasing cross from Gil almost meets Scarlett on the run, who is just sandwiched out by two defenders. That’s good from the youngsters. A goal-kick is given, incorrectly.

66'

Again that should be a goal. Rennes rip Spurs open and Laborde flashes over. He probably should have squared that, there were players over.

65'

Big chance for Rennes as a whipped cross picks out Sulemana but he can’t get his header on target.

64'

Emerson is caught on the ankle out on the touchline and the Spurs players are unimpressed that a card isn’t shown. The referee has been extraordinarily lenient this evening.

62'

A beautiful ball over the top almost catches Spurs out but Gollini is alive to the danger and collects on the edge of the box.

59'

Emerson Royal is being deployed on the right of the front-three here, which is an interesting role for a natural full-back. He’s pushing very high, but what it will do will offer Doherty some protection, which he has really needed.

57'

Gil goes for goal from a very narrow angle and holds his head in his hands. That’s a bit of a waste, it was a great position for a whipped cross into the box.

56'

Emerson is caught trying to burst towards the byline down the right and it’s a free-kick in a very dangerous area for Spurs.

Lucas Moura’s night is over, he’s not able to continue after that knock to the ankle. On comes young Dane Scarlett.

53'

Close to a second for Rennes. Guirassy gets across his man at the front post, but Rodon does just enough to pressure him into turning his shot wide.

51'

Outstanding from Ndombele who links up with Kane and skips into the box, forcing a sharp save at his feet. It’s a goalkick, but the intent from that move was mightily impressive.

49'

Lucas is back on but he’s not moving well. Perhaps it’s just a little knock that needs to be shaken off, we’ll see.

47'

This isn’t great. Lucas is caught late and he’s hurt his ankle here. It looks very unlikely he’ll be able to continue, meaning that both of Spurs’ wide forwards will have been forced off.

45'

Spurs get the game back underway and have made no additional changes at the break.

The whistle goes to bring a pulsating first period to an end. Catch you in 15.

45'

Rennes have been outstanding since the Lucas opener in this first half and probably deserve to be ahead at the break. They almost are as a deep cross is met by the flying Sulemana with a lower header that he can’t turn on target.

42'

Harry Kane lets fly through the legs of a defender and forces a smart save out of the goalkeeper.

41'

Kane wins a free-kick out on the Spurs right by inviting the foul, which duly comes from an overly eager defender. The set-piece comes to nothing however as Rennes clear.

38'

That’s good work by Lucas, who darts back to rescue a loose ball after Ndombele is barged over.

35'

Spurs have regathered their composure and are trying to take the sting out of the Rennes game. It’s intriguingly poised this match right now.

32'

Doherty gives the ball away and Rennes work it in-field for another shot from range. It looks like they fancy testing Gollini from distance as often as possible tonight.

Gil will move into the front three and Hojbjerg comes on for Bergwijn to try and give Spurs a bit more solidity in the middle of the park, where they have lost control in the last ten minutes or so.

29'

Bergwijn can’t continue. He was caught flush on the ankle by a late and rush challenge and is in a bit of pain, but is at least back on his feet, hobbling around the outside of the pitch as he heads for the tunnel.

29'

Tait drifts inside and has a go again from range, but this shot isn’t quite up to the standard.

28'

Bergwijn is down and hurt. He’s off the field so play will continue, and I’ll bring you an update about the winger’s condition when there is one.

26'

All of a sudden Spurs are on the ropes. It’s been all Rennes in the short time since the equaliser and the crowd are rocking.

  • Flavien Tait
GoalFlavien TaitStade RennaisGOOOAALLL!!! What a goal that is! Super beautiful interplay on the edge of the box gives Flavien Tait a split-second to look up and pick his spot. And pick his spot he does, curling a lovely shot into the bottom corner to draw Rennes level. 1-1!

21'

I wasn’t expecting the opening group match of the Europa Conference League to throw up such a peach of a game, but it’s been a belter so far. Rennes have opened up massively since the goal and playing some lovely football, as are Spurs in truth.

19'

Should be 1-1. Bourigeaud stings the palms of Gollini with a shot from range, and the Spurs replacement keeper can only palm the ball straight back out into the mixer where Truffert heads over.

18'

Another clever move sends Bergwijn away down the left, but he loses his footing slightly and the chance to burst into the box evaporates.

17'

Rennes have really upped the tempo since going behind and it’s making for an excellent game. There’s tons of space for the visitors to exploit, but it’s a question of getting the balance right and not giving the hosts the chance to counter.

15'

Bergwijn is absolutely clattered in a firm but fair challenge out on the Spurs left. Rennes are attempting to push his buttons but he doesn’t react.

14'

Tempers flare in the Rennes half as Bergwijn and Traore go forehead-to-forehead and there’s some serious words being said. The referee keeps his cards in his pocket, but this game isn’t far away from getting spicy.

12'

The move from Tottenham deserved a goal. It started with a brilliant back-heel from Ndombele on the touchline that took two players out of the game. And then a delightful first-time flicked pass around the corner from Kane set Lucas away. The deflection that sent the ball past a wrong-footed goalkeeper was fortunate, but the work up until that point was top-drawer.

GOOOAAALLL!!! Spurs have the lead and it’s Lucas Moura, courtesy of a huge deflection, that gets it! 1-0.

10'

Ndombele shows impressive intent to chase down a lost cause, controlling brilliantly to keep the ball in and only losing the opportunity to make something of it when the flag goes up for a slightly harsh shoulder barge decision.

7'

It opens up for Rennes for the first time as Guirassy makes a smart run down the inside right channel and looks to cut the ball back. His attempted cross is blocked, but that’s a warning for Spurs about what to expect on the break from the hosts.

4'

Already there’s been more creativity from Tottenham than there was in the entirety of the 90 minutes against Palace. Ndombele is at the heart of an early move, weaving his way through the Rennes midfield and picking a pass out to Bergwijn, whose shot is blocked.

2'

Tottenham are in their all-white European strip, while Rennes are in their usual red with black shorts and black socks.

  • 1st Half

The players are out in France and away we go. It’s a great atmosphere in Rennes, where the fans will be quite interested to see such a relatively strong Spurs line-up.

It’s a big night for the new-look Spurs midfield, with Tanguy Ndombele back in the fray after reportedly pushing for a move in the off-season. But Ndombele is not the player setting Spurs fans pulses racing right now. That honour is held by young Spaniard Bryan Gil, who starts in midfield tonight too. And Eurosport’s very own Graham Ruthven has run the rule over the impact Gil could make on his new club.

These two teams are tipped as the favourites to qualify for the knockout stages, with NS Mura of Slovenia and Vitesse of the Netherlands are the other two clubs in Group F. But clearly the format of the competition means that winning the group has distinct advantages, so a victory here would be a great start for either side.

The format of the competition means that the group winners will go immediately through to the last-16 knockout phase, while the runners-up in each group will face an additional knockout round against one of the eight third-placed teams from the Europa League group stage.

Rennes’ big strength last season was defensively. They conceded just 40 goals in the campaign, a record that only Lille and PSG bettered. And that is not good news for a Spurs side who have struggled to create chances so far under Nuno.

The Ligue 1 outfit have endured a struggling start to the domestic season, winning just one of five. But they played some decent football to finish sixth in the last campaign, finishing outside of the crop of title challengers, but showing enough to suggest they could be a threat to Spurs in Group F.

Harry Kane

That certainly sounded like being the intended strategy from Spurs in this new European competition; using it as a squad development competition at first before taking it slightly more seriously in the latter stages. But Rennes are no pushovers, so Nuno has named a relatively strong side, including Harry Kane up top.

Tonight’s match will give Spurs boss Nuno Espirito Santo a chance to get some good vibes back around the camp, while also rotating his squad and giving some of the squad players a chance.

Tottenham’s season was going so well. But it doesn’t take much for the mood to shift at this stage of a season, and Saturday’s 3-0 capitulation at Crystal Palace was more than enough to remove the glow from three straight wins at the start of the Premier League season.
