Gareth Southgate picked the youngest England team to play in a competitive international since 1959, and they emerged with a stunning win - against a team who had not lost in a meaningful match at home for 15 years - after an inspired first half.
And captain Kane insisted that despite history being against them, and a 2-1 defeat to the same side at Wembley in September, his team believed a positive result was on the cards.
"We knew we could beat them," he told Sky Sports.
We played well at Wembley and came out of the blocks firing. I thought we defended well and soaked up the pressure.
"It's tough to come here and win and we've done that. I enjoyed it, it was a great performance, everyone dug deep. We deserved it and played well."
Kane, who did not score, but provided assists for both Raheem Sterling and Marcus Rashford, added: "People always talk about goals and if I don't score I don't play well - but I've contributed to the team and that's important to me.
I love scoring goals but winning feels even better.
Sterling, who scored his first goals for England in three years, was also delighted. He told Radio 5 live: "It's an incredible night."
"The boys showed real confidence to go out there against a really good side and not just play, to compete. We had a good World Cup and could have done even better but we are going in the right direction.
"I haven't scored for a while for England so it was frustration, all the pressure, it all comes out in the celebration. There is nothing better than scoring in an England shirt.
"We showed energy, effort and courage to get on the ball. As a forward you go through patches but I am forgetting about looking nice, getting in behind and causing havoc."

'We are encouraging them to take risks'

Southgate also praised the courage of his young side. "The players should be incredibly proud of their performance," the England boss told Sky Sports. "We spoke to the forward players before the game to remind them what a threat they are and they were outstanding, causing all sorts of problems.
"Then it was up to the rest of the team to be brave and we did that really well at times. We are encouraging them to take risks.
"The young players put on a mature performance and withstood pressure really well."
