Arkadiusz Milik's retaken penalty earned Poland a 1-1 draw in Portugal, a result which condemned Germany to Pot 2 for Euro 2020 qualifying.
With Portugal already qualified for the summer's Nations League finals, the onus was on Poland to take the game to the Group A3 winners as they chased a draw or better that would secure them a place in Pot 1 in the Euros qualification process, but Andre Silva headed the hosts in front in the 34th minute from a Renato Sanches corner to make Poland's task all the more difficult.
However, after Danilo hauled Milik down in the box in the 65th minute, earning the Porto defender a straight red card as he was adjudged to have been last man, Milik overcame the pressure of having to retake his penalty after his team-mates encroached on the first spot kick to earn Poland that ever-so-crucial point.
Before their trip to northern Portugal, Poland sat in the bottom two teams in the A Groups, and were they to lose to Portugal, they would have joined Iceland in dropping into the group of second seeds for Euro 2020 qualifying. However, their draw moved them above Germany, meaning Joachim Low's side are in Pot 2 for the draw in December.
Without captain Cristiano Ronaldo, who remains on a self-imposed exile from the national side, the game started a very slow pace, with the odd Renato Sanches long-range effort as close as we came to a goal, before the Bayern Munich man turned provider for Andre Silva to glance in the opener for his 15th international goal.
After the break, Portugal took their foot off the gas, with Danilo caught out by Milik, who broke clear, before being pulled back. The referee had no hesitation in brandishing the red card, before angering the Polish players for forcing Milik to retake. The Napoli hitman kept his cool to earn his side what could prove to be a crucial point.

TALKING POINT

A 2018 to forget for Germany. Low's side came into the year on a 22 match unbeaten run, as world champions. In less than 12 months, they have been humiliated at the World Cup, lost six times - more than they have ever lost in calendar year - before slumping to Nations League relegation. Poland piled the misery on their neighbours with a battling point, something that could provide a real boost for new Poland coach Jerzy Brzęczek.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Arkadiusz Milik. Throughout, as his team-mates struggled to create openings of note, Milik's movement and intelligence kept driving Poland forward. The composure he showed when twice having to score from the spot deserves the utmost acclaim, too. His injury woes seem to be well and truly a thing of the past.

KEY MOMENTS

34' - GOOOOOOOOAAAALLLLLLL!!!! Portugal 1-0 Poland. Andre Silva's 15th international goal breaks the deadlock here. Good news if you are a Germany fan. A very simple goal, with Silva climbing highest from a Sanches corner to head home his third of this Nations League campaign.
37' - WOODWORK! Tomasz Kedziora wastes a glorious chance to equalise after losing Danilo from a free-kick, but his header comes out of the crossbar, before Beto is fouled when attempting to punch the rebound clear.
39' - SAVE! Poland are really pressing now, and Portugal have Beto to thank for keeping them in it, as he races from his line to smother a Frankowski shot from a tight angle.
62' - PENALTY TO POLAND! Danilo hauls down Milik in the box. Lifeline for Poland! RED CARD FOR DANILO! It gets worse for Portugal, as Danilo is adjudged to have been last man. Double jeopardy, no?
66' - GOOOOOOOAAAAALLLLLL!!!! Portugal 1-1 Poland. Milik steps up, at the second time of asking, to equalise. Remember, this result will see Poland seal a place in Pot 1 for the European Championship qualifiers, at Germany's expense.
88' - SAVE! Bereszynski carries the ball towards goal, fires a fierce strike for goal, but Beto is equal to it, beating the ball away with two hands, before Kadzior fired just wide moments later.
