Nations League, Johan Cruyff Arena - Netherlands 3 (Van Dijk 30', Depay 86', 90') Germany 0.

Germany’s dismal run of form continued as rivals Netherlands inflicted a 3-0 defeat on Joachim Low’s side.

It was the heaviest defeat ever inflicted on Germany by the Dutch and Netherlands first competitive win over Die Nationalmannschaft since 1992. Although the result could have been very different had Germany taken their chances.

Virgil Van Dijk gave the Dutch the lead in the first half, heading into an empty net after Ryan Babel had hit the bar from a corner kick. From there, though, it was the visitors who dominated, with Thomas Muller and Leroy Sane both spurning golden opportunities to equalise.

Memphis Depay made sure of the points late on, getting on the end of a cross on the rapid counter attack before striking the crossbar as Germany lost all shape and discipline. Georginio Wijnaldum rubbed salt into the wounds in stoppage time, firing past Manuel Neuer to cap a memorable night for Netherlands.

TALKING POINT - From the ashes a new Oranje generation is rising

Things have been rather bleak for the Dutch national team in recent years. They have failed to qualify for the last two major tournaments and looked to be at something of a nadir in their recent history. From the ashes a new generation is rising. In the likes of Matthijs De Ligt, Denzel Dumfries, Virgil Van Dijk, Marten De Roon, Frenkie De Jong and even the revitalised Depay, Netherlands boast a host of promising youngsters who will surely light up the European game for years to come. The future’s bright… you know the rest.

MAN OF THE MATCH - Memphis Depay (Netherlands)

His career looked to be on the decline after leaving Manchester United as a flop two years ago, but Depay showed just how good he can be with this performance. The winger now has seven goals in his last 10 appearances for club and country and is returning to the top of the game. He scored late on to secure the win for the Dutch, but even before then Depay was the creator in-chief for a side that looked rampant in the final third.

17’ Werner wide! That's the first real sight of goal either side have had! Werner gets away from Van Dijk and bursts through on goal. Cillessen comes out of goal and Werner skews his shot wide.

19’ Brilliant save! Germany are cranking up the pressure. This time Kroos plays the ball back for Muller, who takes aim from eight yards out. Cillessen makes an excellent save, though.

30’ GOAL! Netherlands 1-0 Germany: It's the Dutch that have the lead! Neuer misjudges the corner kick, Babel smashes a header against the crossbar and Van Dijk was on hand to head home into the empty net! His second goal for Oranje!

33’ How did that stay out?! Dumfries puts in a wicked low cross to the back post where Babel was ready to knock into the net, but Ginter's slide clearance puts it away for a corner. Wow!

38’ What a chance! That should have been the equaliser for Germany. Netherlands were sleeping at the back, with Muller allowed through, but his shot only finds the side netting!

65’ Sane should score! A golden opportunity for the Man City winger. Kimmich's pass opened up the Dutch defence, but clean through Sane managed to shoot wide of the target.

87’ GOAL! Netherlands 2-0 Germany: That's the goal that should seal it! Germany give the ball away in the middle of the park, get caught out on the counter attack with the ball played across the box for Depay, who takes two touches before finishing.

91’ Off the crossbar! Depay was clean through after Germany tried to play him offside. But the Lyon winger smashes his effort off the crossbar! Close to a third for the Netherlands.

92’ GOAL! Netherlands 3-0 Germany: It's three for the Dutch! What an emphatic victory! Germany give the ball away and Wijnaldum goes past two defenders to finish into the far corner of the net! What a goal from the midfielder! What a moment!

This was Netherlands’ first win over Germany in any fixture since 2002 and their first competitive win over their rivals since 1992.

Germany have now failed to score in three fixtures (South Korea, France, Netherlands) for the first time ever.
