The visitors were under pressure for much of the match but Italy couldn’t find a goal, with Ciro Immobile missing perhaps their best chance after just five minutes as he failed to hit the target after Rui Patricio could only parry a Lorenzo Insigne drive.
Patricio made a smart save later to deny Immobile, while William Carvalho produced an impressive stop from Gianluigi Donnarumma late on as Portugal grew into the game.
The night was also noteworthy for Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini winning his 100th cap – a feat only six other players have achieved.

TALKING POINT

Chiellini 100 not-out and still going strong. It was a big night for Chiellini and he demonstrated he’s still at the top of his game early on, making a great covering block to deny Bruma. There wasn’t a lot of defending for him to, but what there was he did well and the 34-year-old even tried a few uncharacteristically ambitious things when on the ball. Chiellini was one of only two players in Italy’s starting 11 in his 30s but very much has a role to play in the Azzurri’s future - and a central one at that.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Joao Cancelo (Portugal). He defended well when his team was under pressure for long stretches and was also one of Portugal’s biggest attacking threats, not that that is saying too much.

KEY MOMENTS

5’ – CHANCE! Insigne makes space for himself between the Portuguese lines, drives towards goal and then unleashes a powerful shot that Patricio does well to keep out but the rebound falls to Immobile, who shoots over from close range.
35’ – SAVE! Verratti plays a beautifully-weighted pass in behind the Portuguese defence but Patricio is off his line in a flash to deny Immobile, who tried to chip the goalie.
76’ – SAVE! A Portuguese cross isn't properly cleared and the ball runs to Carvalho, 20 yards out. He hits it low and hard and Donnarumma makes a splendid save to keep it 0-0.
90+2’ – SAVE! Pellegrini is unmarked from a corner but heads straight at Patricio, who makes a comfortable save.
