England get the job done in the end. In truth, they should have finished off Switzerland in 90 minutes and then certainly in extra time, but Southgate will look at this as another opportunity to gain some experience ahead of next summer's European Championships.

PICKFORD WINS IT FOR ENGLAND! At long last, Southgate's side have won this Nations League third place playoff! Pickford guesses the right way and saves from Drmic! England win on penalties.
PENALTY SCORED ! Switzerland 5-6 England: Dier is next up and gets his spot kick, which wasn't the best, past Sommer in the Switzerland goal.
PENALTY SCORED ! Switzerland 5 -5 England: Schar gets a little lucky. Pickford went to his left first then very nearly made the save. But Shar squeezes it home.
PENALTY SCORED! Switzerland 4-5 England: PICKFORD takes England's fifth penalty kick and slams home a finish from 12 yards out! Well that was weird.
PENALTY SCORED ! Switzerland 4-4 England: Mbabu takes the fourth Swiss penalty kick and finds the corner of the net despite Pickford guessing the right way!
PENALTY SCORED! Switzerland 3-4 England: Sterling grabs the ball and smashes home the strike! That was a big penalty kick for Enland and the Man City forward. He delivered.
PENALTY SCORED! Switzerland 3-3 England: Akanji didn't look that comfortable, it was a strange run up, but he sends his effort into the top right corner of the net!
PENALTY SCORED ! Switzerland 2-3 England: Sancho is next up for England and just about squeezes his spot kick past Sommer! That wasn't the best, but got the job done.
PENALTY SCORED ! Switzerland 2-2 England: Xhaka takes the second Switzerland penalty and rolls it into the corner of the net with Pickford diving the wrong way.
PENALTY SCORED! Switzerland 1-2 England: Barkley is next up for England. It's a short run up from the Chelsea midfielder and he converts the Panenka!
PENALTY SCORED ! Switzerland 1-1 England: Zuber takes the first Swiss penalty kick and sends his strike into the top left corner!
PENALTY SCORED ! Switzerland 0-1 England: Maguire steps up to take the first penalty kick for England and he smashes it home, with Sommer diving the wrong way. England have the advantage.
- End of E.T 2nd Half
FULL TIME: Switzerland 0-0 England. Yup, we're going to a penalty shootout.
It's fair to say that Switzerland have rode their luck at times this afternoon. Nonetheless, we are just seconds away from a penalty shootout to decide this Nations League playoff.
Crashed off the crossbar! England have hit the woodwork for the FOURTH time this afternoon! This time it's Sterling who smashes a freekick from the edge of the box off the crossbar.
Xhaka is shown a yellow card for bringing down Sterling right on the edge of the penalty area. This will be an opportunity for England to grab a winner right at the end of extra time.
Just kidding. It's my job to provide you with updates of this game, no matter how unnecessary it may be. Still nothing really happening to be honest. There will surely be a shootout.
- OffHaris SeferovicSwitzerland
- OnNoah OkaforSwitzerland
Okafor is the youngest player in the Nations League and comes on for the last five minutes.
Shall we just reconvene for the penalty shootout? Okay, there's time to go make a cup of tea and come back. Shall we call it 16:30 to meet again? Right, that's settled. See you then.
Switzerland don't want to be here. At least England are showing some urgency and will to find a winning goal, but the Swiss have been coasting through this since about the 70th minute.
Sancho should at least give England some fresh energy in the closing stages of this extra time period. He could and perhaps should have scored in the semi final against Netherlands.
Are we destined to head to a penalty shootout here? England have had so many chances to settle this game and yet we are still, after 110 minutes, waiting for the breakthrough.
England were in! Alexander-Arnold was in behind down the right side, but the pass into Wilson wasn't great and Switzerland get back to make the intervention and prevent the goal.
- OffFabian DelphEngland
- OnRoss BarkleyEngland
In fact, it's a double change and Barkley comes on for Delph.
- OffJesse LingardEngland
- OnJadon SanchoEngland
Another change from Southgate and Sancho comes on for Lingard.
- E.T 2nd Half
The second half of extra time is under way between Switzerland and England! Still 0-0.
- End of E.T 1st Half
HALF TIME IN EXTRA TIME: Switzerland 0-0 England
One minute of added time to be played at the end of the first half of extra time.
Alexander-Arnold and Walker have been switching back and forth between the left back and right back positions. It's been interesting to watch and you'd have to say that it was worked!
Wilson has at least given England more of a threat in the final third since coming on. He has been more willing to sniff out the scraps than Kane was when he was on the pitch.
The England supporters aren't happy. Alexander-Arnold sends a freekick into the wall and one of the Swiss players has gone done. The referee has stopped play despite it not being a head knock.
Alexander-Arnold has, by a long distance, been the best player on the pitch this afternoon. He has created about three or four clear scoring opportunities with his crossing.
Southgate has his hands on his head on the touchline. He can't quite believe that England, given the chances they have created this afternoon, still haven't found the back of the net.
What a double save! Alexander-Arnold gets another exceptional cross into the middle, Alli forces the stunning save from Sommer and then he gets up quickly to make the save from Sterling on the rebound.
It seems that a lot of the fans at this game in Guimares today have tickets for the final between Netherlands and Portugal in Porto this evening. So they have had to head off. Amazing.
Sterling should score! A wonderful ball from Alexander-Arnold finds Sterling at the back post, but the England attacker somehow manages to head away from goal rather than on target! Strange.
This hasn't been a classic, it's fair to say, but there are still medals up for grabs. Bronze medals for the inaugural UEFA Natons League. If that doesn't get you going, nothing will.
It seems that a lot of the fans inside the stadium in Guimares have actually left at the end of the 90 minutes. Remind me again... why are we having this extra time period?
- E.T 1st Half
Okay, it's the start of the first period of extra time. Still goalless between Switzerland and England.
- End of 2nd Half
FULL TIME: Switzerland 0-0 England
Nope, it seems that we are destined for an additional 30 minutes at the end of what has already been a long, long season. Well done everyone involved. This is what we all wanted.
Maguire is staying up as something of an extra attacker as England look for the goal that would see them finish third in the Nations League and avoid an extra time period of 30 more minutes.
Alexander-Arnold was played in behind down the left side, he had Wilson in the middle waiting for the low delivery, but the England full back just couldn't wrap his foot around that one.
Four minutes of stoppage time to be played at the end of the 90 minutes.
Is there one last chance left in the 90 minutes for England? They have had so many opportunities to score and yet here they are, 89 minutes played with the score still goalless.
- OffRicardo RodríguezSwitzerland
- OnJosip DrmicSwitzerland
Drmic comes on for the final few minutes of normal time, although we might now be heading to extra time.
GOAL CHALKED OFF! Well, well, well. England have been here before. Just as happened against Netherlands, England have had a potential winner chalked off. There was a pull from Wilson.
VAR check! Uh oh! The officials are going to have a look here. Was there a pull from Wilson in the box before the ball was played into the middle? The England players hold their breath!
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Switzerland 0 England 1 (84 mins - Callum Wilson). It's a late goal and that could be a winner for England! Sterling gets to the byline and crosses into the middle. Alli was on hand to head against the crossbar and then Wilson was on hand to bundle into the net from close range. Will that be enough for England?
It;s difficult to imagine where the winner is going to come from in this match. The second half has been a bit of a non-event after a first half that England dominated and should have scored in.
There are just 10 minutes to be played for one of these two teams to score a winner to avoid this match going to extra time. That's something that nobody wants at this stage of the season.
The freekick was played to the back post for Maguire. It was a very deliberate ploy from England, something they had worked on, but Maguire couldn't get over the header and heads well over.
Zuber gets the shot away! The Switzerland substitute found himself in a good shooting position, but his effort is scuffed and Pickford is comfortable in watching the ball dribble wide of the post.
No penalty! The officials had a look at the incident involving Sterling and they have decided that it didn't warrant a spot kick. That was probably the correct decision. No real contact.
- OffHarry KaneEngland
- OnCallum WilsonEngland
Kane is the one to come off. He hands the arm band to Delph as Wilson comes on in his place.
VAR review! England want a penalty kick! Sterling believes that he was fouled as he went up for a header from an Alexander-Arnold cross into the box. The officials are going to check this one.
Wilson is stripped and ready to come on for England. What a season he has had. Can he score one more big goal in the final 15 minutes of this match? Will he come on for Kane?
Chance for Sterling! Oh dear. It hasn't been Sterling's day in front of goal. Alli picked him out, he had space to run into on the edge of the box, but a dreadful first touch allows Switzerland to recover and make the tackle.
- OffDanny RoseEngland
- OnKyle WalkerEngland
It's Walker who comes on for Rose. Does that mean a change of shape for England?
Here we go. Looks like Southgate is about to make a change. England could use some fresh energy because they have allowed their intensity to drop once again in the last 10 minutes.
That was an opportunity for Alexander-Arnold to get a cross into Kane at the back post, but this time the right backs gets his angles wrong and sends his delivery over the Swiss crossbar.
Surely Southgate will make an attacking change here? Will Kane last the full 90 minutes? He has barely had a touch of the ball in this second half. Could Wilson come on?
- OffXherdan ShaqiriSwitzerland
- OnSteven ZuberSwitzerland
Zuber is the replacement for Shaqiri who hobbles off with a slight knock.
Shaqiri injury! It looks like the Liverpool winger will have to come off here. He is looking at his calves and indeed Switzerland will make a change. Shaqiri won't play the full 90 minutes.
Southgate must be frustrated by what he has seen from his England team this afternoon. They have played well and have created chances, but are still being held by Switzerland.
- OffEdimilson FernandesSwitzerland
- OnDenis ZakariaSwitzerland
Indeed, there's the change from Switzerland and Fernandes comes off.
Switzerland injury! This could be a problem. Fernandes has fallen to the floor and it looks like the Switzerland midfielder will have to come off for the final 30 minutes of the match.
Might Southgate be tempted into a change soon? It's in the midfield where England could maybe use some fresh legs. Could we see Henderson come on for either Delph or Dier?
After a slow start to the second half, the tempo and intensity of this game has picked up in the last few moments. You get the feeling that neither team wants to face extra time here!
Pickford saves from Xhaka! That's the best opportunity that Switzerland have created this afternoon! Shaqiri's pass picked out Xhaka who was free 20 yards out, but his shot is saved by Pickford! Good chance.
England have so much quality in the full back areas! If it's not Alexander-Arnold on the right side getting crosses into the box, it's Rose on the left side getting forward on the attack.
Off the post! England strike the woodwork for a second time! Rose's low delivery was a nightmare for Schar, whose outstretched leg diverted the ball on to the far post. Sommer might have got a fingertip to that!
Kane header... offside! Alexander-Arnold swings a wonderful cross into the box, with Kane getting on the end of the delivery. He heads wide, but the flag was up on the near side for offside!
Alexander-Arnold is pulling the strings for England... from his position as a right back. The sky is the limit for the youngster. He is already one of the very best full backs in the game.
Kane started the match well, but he has since faded. This is a guy who really needs a long break. He's basically been playing for two seasons solid. Injuries have been a consequence of this.
PICTURE: Alli should have scored in the first half.
Switzerland are a solid team with a background of grinding out results, but you'd have to say that they have been second best so far this afternoon. Somewhat fortunate to still be level.
England have been the better team so far, but they haven't made the most of the chances they have created. They must show more of a cutting edge in this second 45 minutes.
- 2nd Half
The second half of this Nations League semi final is under way! It's 0-0 between Switzerland against England.
What did you make of the first half in Guimares? Should England be ahead given the chances they have created? Are changes required in the centre of midfield? Tweet me!
- End of 1st Half
HALF TIME: Switzerland 0-0 England. Still waiting for the first goal in this Nations League third place playoff, but there have been chances. England will feel that they should be ahead.
Just one minute of stoppage time to be played at the end of the first half.
The tempo has dropped out of the match in the last 10 minutes. It has started to feel like the dead rubber that many predicted before kick off. A lack of intensity after a quick start.
How will Southgate approach this half time team talk? England have created opportunities, so will he ask for more of the same? Or will he be a little firmer with them?
The back four has worked quite well for England in this first half. You have to wonder if this is the natural shape for this group of players and not the three-at-the-back system Southgate likes.
That was a disappointing delivery. England had players up from the back for the corner kick, but the cross doesn't even beat the first man and Switzerland can comfortably clear the danger.
England really should be ahead by now. They have created three or four really goo opportunities to find the back of the net, but Switzerland are also capable of causing problems.
Seferovic in behind! Delph gets the offside trap wrong, allowing the Swiss striker in on goal. However, Maguire makes the ground up on Seferovic and makes the late tackle to block the shot!
What an incredible crosser of the ball Alexander-Arnold is. People were raving about Trippier's deliveries at the World Cup last summer, but TAA has to be England's best crosser since Beckham!
Alli should score! Another exceptional cross from Alexander-Arnold picks out the run of Alli in the middle, who was completely free. But the Spurs midfielder sends his powerful header over the crossbar!
There's a lack of urgency about this match at the moment. This is perhaps what we expected before kick off, but the game started at a good pace. It has dropped off since then.
Alli has been quiet in this first half. Lots of movement between him, Kane and Lingard, but the Spurs man has been left frustrated in his search to get on the ball running towards goal.
Switzerland have kept England at arm's length for much of this match, but they have struggled to create chances of their own. This time a move breaks down after a wayward Fernandes pass.
PICTURE: Eric Dier is in the England team this afternoon. Opportunity.
Another chance for Sterling! England have had three big chances in this first half. This time, Alexander-Arnold puts the low ball into the near post, but Sterling, in behind his marker, misses his shot.
England are seeing plenty of the ball at the moment. Maguire steps forward into midfield, but doesn't see much in the way of options ahead of him. Switzerland are well organised.
- Yellow cardJesse LingardEngland
Lingard becomes the second England player to pick up a yellow card.
Xhaka... woeful! We know that the Arsenal midfielder can strike them from distance, but he gets it all wrong this time, sending a low effort dribbling wide of Pickford's near post. No drama.
Just a reminder that this match will go to extra time and penalties if the two teams cannot be divided after 90 minutes. I'm sure that's what all these players want at the end of their season...
Kane has looked sharper in the opening exchanges of this match than he did for Spurs in the Champions League final when, to be frank, he just wasn't fit enough to start a match of that magnitude.
- Yellow cardDanny RoseEngland
Rose becomes the first player to enter the book for a lunge on Mbabu.
This is the chance that Sterling should have scored.
This has been a decent opening 20 minutes from England, but Southgate will be a little worried that they haven't taken the lead against a Swiss side that can be difficult to put away.
That was harsh on Delph. The Manchester City midfielder-turned-full back slid in on Schar and won the ball, but the referee wasn't too keen on it and awarded Switzerland the foul.
That chance for Sterling came from Alexander-Arnold's movement down the right side. This is a good opportunity for the youngster to show why he deserves to be first choice for club and country.
Dier gave away the ball in a bad area and this is what has been talked about a lot since the semi final defeat to Netherlands. England just don't have players to control the game through the centre.
England have created the best two opportunities through Kane and Sterling. Switzerland are renowned for their organisation, but England are having joy cutting them open at the back.
Sterling should score! That was a golden opportunity for the England forward! Alli and Kane combined to set up Sterling for the shot six yards out from goal, but Sommer makes the low save.
There are a good number of England fans in Guimares for what is essentially a meaningless game. It feels like a lot of them expected to be in the final later this evening.
Shot at Pickford! That was very easy for Switzerland to play a ball right through the middle of England. Freuler gets the shot away on the bounce, but his effort is straight at Pickford.
Alli tries to pressure Mbabu as the Swiss full back heads back towards his own goal, but the England attacker is a little too eager and gives away the freekick when he didn't really need to.
PICTURE: The England team starting against Switzerland.
This isn't the match that England wanted to be playing today. However, they have started quite sharply so it would seem that they want to use this as an opportunity to make an impression.
Of course, while Switzerland might not have many superstars, they are a solid team and showed that last summer by making the knockout rounds of the World Cup. They aren't beaten often.
Delph and Dier are both decent players, but their selection in the centre of the England midfield demonstrates the problems Southgate faces in finding players who can control a game.
Switzerland have responded well to that early England opportunity. They have taken control of things in the centre of the pitch, but England look dangerous whenever they win it back.
The pre-match scene...
That would have been a magnificent way to start for England. Kane's finish would have been a beauty. He was unfortunate to see his effort come off the woodwork. England on top.
Off the crossbar! Almost an early opener for England! There have been questions over Kane's fitness of late, but he very nearly put England ahead there as he chipped Sommer from a through ball by Lingard!
- 1st Half
The match is under way! It's Switzerland against England in this UEFA Nations League third place play-off!
Okay, here we go. We're about to get started in Guimares. Kick off is just moments away.
There are a number of players in that England team who will be looking to make an impression here. Seven changes from the side that faced Netherlands.
What sort of performance will England turn in today? It's very warm out in Portugal. Will that affect the display of some of the players?
I'm Graham Ruthven and you can catch me on Twitter ahead of the game to let me know your thoughts! Should Alexander-Arnold have started against the Dutch? Can Switzerland win this? Tweet me!
Defensive change! Southgate has switched to a back three for this match with Stones dropping out of the team. Gomez comes in for him. Of course, it was Stones who made the mistake against Netherlands.
Damp squib! Of course, this wasn't where England wanted to be today. They were up against Netherlands in the semi final, but allowed their lead to slip and now face this playoff game.
Kane is back! The Spurs forward was left out of the lineup for the Nations League semi final against Netherlands, but Kane, who has been struggling with injury, is back in the team for this one!
