Ventura happy despite third straight defeat for Chievo

Nov 4 (Reuters) - Chievo coach Gian Piero Ventura was happy with his side on Sunday though he admitted that sounded an "insane" thing to say after the Serie A table-proppers suffered their third straight defeat under his leadership.

The Flying Donkeys went down 2-0 at home to Sassuolo, their situation summed up by an embarrassing own goal by Emanuele Giaccherini who chested the ball into the net in stoppage time.
"I have to look beyond the result and I can say I am satisfied with the performance," the 70-year-old former Italy coach told reporters. "I know that might sound a bit insane after three consecutive defeats.
"We played on level terms with Sassuolo for at least 70 minutes and they are a team who made significant investments in the summer. I think we improved."
Ventura took over last month to replace Lorenzo D'Anna, his first coaching job since he was fired by Italy last November following their failure to qualify for the World Cup.
Chievo have lost their last seven games and have conceded nine goals in their three defeats under Ventura.
With three points deducted for accounting irregularities, they have minus one point and are seven adrift at the bottom.
Federico Di Francesco -- the son of AS Roma coach Eusebio -- ran on to a through ball to put sixth-placed Sassuolo ahead three minutes before halftime before Giaccherini suffered his moment of shame.
The former Juventus, Sunderland and Italy player attempted to chest the ball back to Stefano Sorrentino without noticing that the goalkeeper was stranded on the ground and the ball bounced into the net. (Writing by Brian Homewood; Editing by Clare Fallon)
