And that's full-time!

Scotland rallied late on and almost produced a rousing comeback but Japan hold on for a big win which gets their campaign started after they drew a blank against Argentina.

90+2'

Great save!

Far from looking to defend what they have, Japan are going for a goal which would seal the victory, with Alexander forced to make a fine stop from Sugita.

GOAL!

Scotland's pressure has paid off! Ichise plays a terrible ball under no pressure straight to Clelland, who goes for goal and finds the back of the net from the edge of the box. Scotland are back in it!

84'

Terrible, terrible decision.

Cuthbert brings the ball under control in the box but is under close attention from Shimizu, who appears to punch the ball away. Somehow the referee is unmoved and declines the opportunity to double-check her decision on VAR. Baffling.

83'

Evans takes a dip from distance this time but Yamashita gets two solid hands behind it to make a routine save.

83'

Shimizu has an effort from way, way out which flies over the bar.

79'

Penalty shout for Scotland!

Cuthbert goes down under a challenge from Ichise and is appealing for a spot kick. The referee is unimpressed, however, and on viewing the replay, it appears to have been a good tackle.

77'

So close!

Off the post! Weir sends in a free kick which Beattie nods down at the far post. Cuthbert sticks out a boot and sends the ball against the woodwork. Was that Scotland's best chance of getting back into the box?

76'

Ichise again!

A poor pass out of the back allows Scotland to work the ball to Cuthbert, who shoots Ichise is there to make another fine goal-saving challenge.

71'
64'

Yamashita comes charging out of her goal to deal with an overhit cross from the Scotland left but her decision was a good one and she helps deal with the danger.

What a save!

Nakajima skips inside from the right and lets fly with a wonderful left-footed effort which looks destined to nestle in the bottom corner but Alexander gets down low to her right to parry it behind.

57'

What a tackle!

Little dribbles well towards the box and looks to feed Evans but Ichise gets across to remove the danger with a superb challenge.

56'

Chance!

The corner comes in from the right to Kumagai, who can't get enough on it and the ball goes harmlessly behind for a goalkick.

55'

There's yet more lax defending from Scotland and the ball almost falls to Sugasawa, but Beattie gets across to make a fine tackle and put it behind for a corner.

51'

Weir looks to test Yamashita from distance but the effort is very tame and gathered easily. Scotland have had three efforts of note, all from way out.

49'

This has been all Japan so far. They've not created anything yet but the omens are bad for Scotland.

46'

And we're back. Japan get the second half started as they look to seal a crucial win.

  • End of 1st Half
45+1'

And that's half-time.

Japan have a commanding 2-0 lead they thoroughly deserve in Rennes, with Iwabuchi and Sugasawa netting the two goals. The latter went down very easily for the penalty but there can be no denying that the Japanese have been far superior.

45+1'

Off the bar!

Sameshima gets down the left well and cuts the ball back to the edge of the six yard box. It's slightly behind Sugita, who does well to get a left boot to it and the ball ballons up and hits the woodwork. Alexander was beaten there, and Scotland were nearly dealt a fatal blow.

45'

Scotland have certainly improved since they fell 2-0 down and are enjoying a fair amount more of the ball in the Japan half. Cuthbert tries an angled cross from the left but it's gathered easily by the goalkeeper.

42'

Decent effort from Scotland - their best so far!

They are camped outside the Japan box but the favourites do a good job of stifling and harrying the attackers. But the ball is eventually worked to Cuthbert, who gets the ball out of her feet and lets fly but it's a foot or so over the bar.

Off the line!

Alexander comes and fails to gather a cross the ball looks to be heading in after a scramble but Kim Little is there to head it off the line.

27'

There's absolute pandemonium in the Scotland box. Iwabuchi has a dig after seizing onto the loss ball following a cross but Beattie makes a fine block. The ball falls to Endo, who tries her luck but Corsie is there this time to get in the way..

  • Mana Iwabuchi

SAVE!

Iwabuchi does brilliantly as Scotland dawdle in possession at the back, stealing the ball and shooting from a narrow angle. Alexander gets behind the ball well, though, and makes the save.

12'

This time the angled ball over the top does find Ross. She does well to hold the ball up and forces it back to Lauder, who tries to bend a shot but doesn't get enough on it and it's an easy save.

10'

Scotland get the ball up the field for the first time as they look to play in Ross over the top but it's gathered easily by Yamashita.

7'

Japan begin to probe for the first time.

Sugasawa springs the offside trap and played a decent ball to Nakajima, who drags her first-time left-footed volley narrowly wide. Alexander didn't look overly worried but good play nonetheless.

4'

Japan seem happy to concede possession in the early stages and try to press Scotland into a mistake at the back.

1'

Nakajima gets down the right well on the overlap but the danger is soon dealt with. Eventually the ball does come into the box but Alexander makes an easy save from the loose ball.
