Corinne Diacre sacked by French Football Federation due to ‘irreversible damage’ four months ahead of Women’s World Cup

The French Football Federation have sacked Corinne Diacre just four months ahead of the Women’s World Cup. A rift between Diacre and several of France’s leading names saw captain Wendie Renard, Kadidiatou Diani and Marie-Antoinette Katoto announce they would not represent their country at the World Cup, which takes place in Australia and New Zealand from July 20 to August 20.

Corinne Diacre has been sacked as France national team manager, just four months ahead of the 2023 Women’s World Cup.

The announcement comes two weeks after several top players, including captain Wendie Renard, revealed they would not play for their country at the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

Paris Saint-Germain stars Kadidiatou Diani and Marie-Antoinette Katoto also stated they would follow Renard in not representing France.

A statement from the French Football Federation said the relationship between the payers and Diacre was at the point of “no return” and the damage done was “irreversible”.

“In view of these elements, it was decided to put an end to the mission of Corinne Diacre at the head of the French women's team,” added the statement.

“This change of coach is part of a new global ambition led by the FFF in favour of the development of women's football and the performance of the French team, which will have to achieve high objectives during the 2023 World Cup and the 2024 Olympics.

“Philippe Diallo asked the commission to audition, as soon as possible, the candidates for the post of head coach and to formulate its recommendations.”

Since becoming head coach in 2017, Diacre fell out with Renard in her first year as manager, stripping her of the captaincy.

The FFF has also criticised players for using social media to announce their boycott, stating it will “no longer be acceptable in the future”.

France play Jamaica in their opening game on July 23, before facing Brazil on July 29 and Panama on August 2.
