World Cup winner Diego Maradona has stressed the importance of VAR despite scoring one of the most controversial goals in the history of football.
Maradona’s goal against England in the 1986 World Cup, since referred to as ‘The Hand of God’, would have been ruled out if VAR, set to debut at the World Cup this summer, had been in place.
When asked by Omnisport how he would have felt if that goal would have been ruled out Maradona said "Nothing. I would play against the VAR!"
However in general Maradona expressed his support for VAR, saying that keeps football in touch with the changing nature of modern society.
"I think there must be technology in football," he added.
And football can't be disconnected from technology because it is everywhere.
"I think VAR is something really good because it reflects what happens on the field. It is not just about recognising a goal or an offside."
The game against England also contained another memorable Maradona moment, with his second goal labelled the Goal of the Century as he beat six players before scoring.
"I think the second goal is the one everyone dreams of since we were children," Maradona commented.
"I can say this for sure because it is a dream that became a reality and that's why I celebrated so much.
"I think the whole country celebrated and remembers that."
