Well, that was tough for all concerned. Colombia will be gutted to go out after making such a fight of this, but England were over the course of the 120 minutes the better team and they will face Sweden in the quarter finals of the World Cup. They made it tough for themselves, but man, what drama that was.

ENGLAND SCORE! Great spot kick from Trippier. He finds the far corner of the net. Ospina couldn't do anything about it. Colombia 3-3 England after eight pens.
COLOMBIA MISS! Uribe strikes the underside of the bar and it bounces away. Back on serve, so to speak. Colombia 3-2 England from seven pens.
ENGLAND PENALTY SAVED! Ospina guessed the right way and makes the stop. It was a good penalty by Henderson as well! Colombia 3-2 England from six.
COLOMBIA SCORE! Cool from Muriel. He waited for Pickford to dive and then sent the ball into the opposite corner. Colombia 3-2 England from five pens.
ENGLAND SCORE! Emphatic spot kick from Rashford. He smashes it into the bottom corner of the net. Colombia 2-2 England from four pens.

COLOMBIA SCORE! That was decisive from Falcao! He fires right down the middle and Pickford dives the wrong way. Colombia 1-0 England.
- End of E.T 2nd Half
FULL TIME: Colombia 1-1 England. We're going to a penalty shootout to decide this one!
Just one minute of stoppage time to be played at the end of extra time.
- Yellow cardJuan CuadradoColombia
That was a wild challenge from Cuadrado, who sees yellow for halfing Rose down the left wing.
That should have been a corner kick for Colombia. Dier quite clearly flicked it behind for a corner, but the referee has given the goal kick and Falcao is incensed by that.
- OffSantiago AriasColombia
- OnCristían ZapataColombia
Zapata comes on for Colombia. Is Pekerman now making changes with the looming shootout in mind?
FREE HEADER! Oh that was a chance for Dier. A real chance. He was free about eight yards out, but he got his leap all wrong and heads over the crossbar. He should have hit the target.
LINGARD... CLOSE! A great pass gets Vardy in behind down the right side, he crosses to the near post where Lingard was making the run. But Colombia put it behind for a corner.
INCHES WIDE! So close to a second goal for England! Rose got in behind the Colombian defence, good pass by Henderson, and he sends his low drive right across the face of goal and wide of the far post.
This is better from England. It has taken them 23 minutes of the extra time period, but they are finally stringing some passes together on the edge of the Colombian penalty area.
It must be said that the changes from Southgate haven't worked at all. The England manager got some praise for his subs in the Tunisia game, but they have cost his side here.
Vardy has at least given Englan some fresh legs in the final third of the pitch. He is chasing everything, but the Leicester City striker is lacking quality when it matters most.
England are just trying to regain some composure and knock the ball around, but the problem they now have is that the Colombian players are right on top of them at every opportunity.
England have gone to pieces, mentally. They look drained by what happened right at the end of the 90 minutes. They haven't started this extra time period yet. How will they face penalties?
VARDY OFFSIDE! The flag was eventually raised, but that looked like being a chance for Vardy. He was in behind, got the shot away, but Ospina makes the comfortable save.
- E.T 2nd Half
The second period of extra time is under way! It's still 1-1 between Colombia and England.
- End of E.T 1st Half
HALF TIME IN ET: Colombia 1-1 England.
FALCAO WIDE! The Monaco striker got in behind the two England centre backs, but Maguire put just enough pressure on him and Falcao heads wide from a dangerous cross.
England haven't really offered much in this first period of extra time. They still look to have that late equaliser in their minds. They need to shake that from their thinking. Quick!
- OffAshley YoungEngland
- OnDanny RoseEngland
A change for England and it's Young who comes off to be replaced by Rose.
Dier looks pretty uncomfortable out there. He was brought off the bench to see the game out for England, but now he isn't really needed as his side needs a goal. They need to move forward.
That wasn't quite the run that Kane was expecting. He played a ball over the top looking for Vardy, but his teammate actually make a diagonal run while he was going over the top.
KANE INJURY? Uh oh. The England striker seems to be limping. Not sure what has caused it, but he's definitely limping. He's going to try and run it off here. Not too serious, he hopes.
It's Colombia who are now on the front foot. England look shell-shocked by what happened right at the end of the 90 minutes. They haven't quite gathered themselves yet.
The Colombian fans are making some noise inside the Spartak Stadium. They have been loud throughout, but now they have cranked things up after that equalising goal.
The other thing to consider is that England now have Vardy on the pitch. That change was made to stretch the field and see the game out. Now England need another goal.
England will be gutted that they conceded that goal so late on. Until then, Colombia had hardly posed a threat on their goal. They were cruising and seeing out the game.
BAD TACKLE! Young went over the top in the tackle with Barrios there. Both players went in hard, but it was the England left back who seemed to cause the most damage.
That late goal for Mina has completely changed the complexion of this match. We are now 30 minutes away from a penalty shootout. Can either side find a winner before then?
- E.T 1st Half
The first half of extra time is under way! It's 1-1 between Colombia and England.
- End of 2nd Half
FULL TIMEl Colombia 1-1 England. We're going into extra time! Mina's late goal has saved Colombia. At least given them a lifeline.
- GoalYerry MinaColombia
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Colombia 1 (94 mins -Yerry Mina). Colombia have scored a stoppage time equaliser! Sensational! The goalkeeper was up from the back, Mina got above his marker and squeezes the header off the underside of the bar, over Trippier and into the back of the net.
WHAT A STRIKE, WHAT A SAVE! Incredible! Uribe has just struck a snapshot from about 30 yards out! But Pickford has clawed out a magnificent save to deny him! What a stop.
It actually took 86 minutes for Colombia to draw a save from Pickford. They have carried very little threat. Still a few minutes for them to change that, though. Three minutes to play.
There's still time for Colombia to find an equaliser to take this game to extra time. In truth, they have disappointed this evening. England haven't had much trouble defending them.
Five minutes of stoppage time to be played at the end of the match.
- OffJuan Fernando QuinteroColombia
- OnLuís MurielColombia
Colombia will also make a change with Muriel coming on. Can the Sevilla striker make the difference?
- OffRaheem SterlingEngland
- OnJamie VardyEngland
A change for England and it's Vardy who will come on for Sterling for the final few minutes.
There's a real tension to this match now. England have remained positive, but there's still a feeling that this is a rather open match and Colombia could create a chance at any moment.
FALCAO CAN'T HIT THE TARGET! That was a very good cross into the England penalty area from the left side, but Falcao just couldn't get over Henderson and he heads over.
MAGUIRE... OVER! It was a good ball to the back post by Trippier, finding Maguire. However, the Leicester City centre back couldn't get his header back across goal and i goes over.
WASTED CHANCE! Lingard was played in behind, with Sterling and Kane in the middle for him as options. However, his touch let him down and eventually gave away the foul.
You get the feeling that was a big moment in this game. Walker's mistake was a bad one and Colombia probably should have made him pay for it. The shot from Cuadrado was wild.
BIG LET OFF FOR ENGLAND! Walker was too complacent on the ball. He got caught out dithering and Cuadrado is presented with the shooting chance! He fires over the target, though!
- OffDele AlliEngland
- OnEric DierEngland
Indeed, here's the change and it's Alli who will come off for his Spurs teammate Dier.
Looks like England are also getting ready to make a change here. Dier is stripped and ready to come on. This suggests Southgate wants to tighten things up in the middle of the pitch.
It's amazing that Sanchez actually lasted as long as he did. There were signs that he was going to do something rash all game long and he eventually gave away the penalty.
- OffCarlos SánchezColombia
- OnMateus UribeColombia
Colombia make a change and it's Uribe who comes on to replace Sanchez who gave away the spot kick.
PENALTY CLAIM! Lingard believe that he should have been awarded a spot kick. It was a great break from England, with Sterling playing through Lingard. He went down in the box, but nothing given.
I might have jinxed England. Since I said they were being positive, Colombia have started to crank up the pressure and now England are quite happy to sit back and defend.
This is pretty positive from England. They are keeping their foot on the pedal. Instead of choosing to go negative and hold what they have got, they are searching for a second goal.
MAGUIRE HEADER OVER! Just for a moment it looked like Maguire had got free of his marker from the corner kick, but the ball was slightly over him and the header lands on the roof of the net.
ALMOST THROUGH! All that was needed was one more pass. Lingard tried to find Kane in the middle. He was unmarked, but the tackle was made to cut out the final ball.
Will we see Rashford shortly? The Manchester United forward has the ability to put this game to bed for England. He can play on the counter attack and get in behind opponents.
England wanted a freekick for what they saw to be a foul on Trippier. They actually stopped waiting for a freekick that never came and that disrupted their passing momentum.
- Yellow cardJesse LingardEngland
Now it's Lingard who enters the book. Some of the England players are starting to react.
Will Southgate make some changes? His team seems to be in control at the moment, but this game has got wild since the goal. There's a sense that anything could happen.
YOUNG INJURY? The England left back is down on the ground after getting caught by Arias as he swung a cross into the box. Young will be fine. He'll get up off his feet shortly.
- Yellow cardCarlos BaccaColombia
Bacca is the next player to enter the book for a late tackle. The yellow cards are mounting up.
- Yellow cardRadamel FalcaoColombia
Falcao enters the book and the Colombian players are losing their heads here. They are right in the referee's face.
ALLI HEADER OVER! Good cross to the back post and Alli gets on the end of the delivery. However, he couldn't quite direct the header on target and it flashes over.
Of course, that goal means that Kane now has six goals for the tournament. He is leading the Golden Boot leader as things stand, scoring all three of his penalty kicks.
So how will England approach this game now? They finally have the lead. Will they continue to push for a second goal? Or will they sit back a little and attempt to see this out?
- OffJefferson LermaColombia
- OnCarlos BaccaColombia
Change for Colombia. Lerma is being replaced by striker Bacca. The South Americans are going for it now.
England just need to keep their cool here. The Colombian players have riled up by the award of that penalty kick and now they are trying a few tricks. England have the lead. They need to remember that.
- Yellow cardJordan HendersonEngland
Henderson was actually booked before the penalty kick was taken for his role inthe scuffles.
- Goal by penaltyHarry KaneEngland
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Colombia 0 England 1 (57 mins - Harry Kane). Such composure from Kane! He had to wait such a long time to take that penalty kick, but when the time came he calmly sent his shot right down the centre of the goal and Ospina guessed the wrong way.
The referee is allowing himself to be dominated by the Colombian players, who are still surrounding him as the VAR review continues. Some of them have even scuffed up the penalty spot.
- Yellow cardCarlos SánchezColombia
Sanchez has been booked for the foul on Kane. The Colombian players are having a real go at the referee.
PENALTY KICK TO ENGLAND! The referee has pointed to the spot for some holding from Sanchez on Kane. What was the Colombian doing?
GOOD DEFENDING! Good delivery from Young looks set to find one of either Maguire or Kane at the back post, but Sanchez gets a glancing header to it to send behind for a corner.
- Yellow cardSantiago AriasColombia
Arias enters the book for going into the back of Kane as the two players challenged for a header.
Mina and Sanchez have been tough to break down at the back. Mina has looked a little flustered at times, but for the most part the Barcelona man and the Spurs defender have been solid.
One wonders how long Southgate will stick with Alli for? He looks to be playing with a knock that was aggrevated at the end of the first half. Loftus-Cheek to come on for him?
Of course, the main flashpoint of the first half came in the clash between Barrios and Henderson. The Colombian was shown a yellow card for a headbutt, which was a weird call.
England must remain calm and keep doing what they are doing. They look comfortable on the ball. Colombia haven't offered all that much themselves, so no real reason to panic.
England were probably just about the better side in the first half, but in truth they must create more in the final third. There was only one half-chance for Kane with a header.
Some stats from the first half...
Somewhat surprising that Alli is back on for the start of the second half. The England midfielder looked to be struggling right on the stroke of half time, but he's managed to shake the problem off.
- 2nd Half
The second half is under way in Moscow! It's 0-0 between Colombia and England after 45 minutes.
What did you make of the first half at the Spartak Stadium? Should England be pleased with how they have played? Will Colombia get better? Tweet me your thoughts!
- End of 1st Half
HALF TIME: Colombia 0-0 England. Still waiting for the deadlock to be broken in Moscow, although Southgate will be relatively pleased with how his England side started the game.
LINGARD OVER! Sterling forces the Colombian defence to make a clearance, with Barrios' header less than convincing. Lingard followed it up, but fires over. It was an awkward height.
QUINTERO ON TARGET! The Colombian midfielder has had a few testers in this first half, but this time he gets his shot away on target. Pickford was right behind it, though.
Three minutes of stoppage time to be played at the end of the first half.
Is there one last chance before the half time break for either of these two teams to make the breakthrough? England have probably edged it, but Colombia have improved with time.
TRIPPIER... JUST WIDE! Not too far away from the target, but Ospina wasn't too worried about it. Trippier strikes the freekick right on the edge of the box. It flashes wide of the post.
- Yellow cardWílmar BarriosColombia
A yellow card... for a headbutt? That's a strange one. Barrios enters the book. He is lucky there.
HEADBUTT? So the England players are calling for the VAR to be used. They are suggesting that Henderson was headbutted by Barrios. They are going to review this.
Kane has actually dropped a little deeper in the last few moments of the match. He's looking for runners ahead of him and Lingard and Sterling are willing to go beyond him.
The positive start has kind of faded for England. They are struggling to make their play count in the opposition half while Colombia are growing in confidence. Dangerous combination.
This has turned into a more even game in the last 10 minutes or so. Colombia are seeing more of the ball and England are having to do some defending of their own.
QUINTERO STRIKE! That was a half chance for the Colombian midfielder. England gave up the ball inside their own half from a throw in, but Quintero scuffed his effort well wide.
Maguire and Cuadrado square up to each other off the ball. There was also a minor incident between Falcao and Trippier. Tensions are starting to rise between the two teams.
STERLING RUN! Great play from Sterling to turn his marker and drive towards goal. He had runners ahead of him, but decided to take the shot from 18 yards out. It's blocked.
The final pass is all that's missing from England's play. They have worked their way into dangerous positions throughout this first half, but they just can't thread through that pass.
There have been times in this first half when Mina has looked a little flustered, as if the occasion is getting to him, but he has also made a number of key interventions, like that header from a corner.
There's so much holding inside the box at every set piece. The referee Geiger implies that he is watching it, but he is letting so much of it go right under his nose. Very physical.
Kane has been lively for England, but he hasn't had much in the way of service in the opening 25 minutes or so. He's had that one headed chance and that's about it for the England number nine.
This is much better from Colombia now. They were always likely to come into the game at some point and now they are dictating things while England stand off them for the moment.
Colombia starting to cause England more problems on the attack now. They very nearly managed to play Falcao through there, but Walker was on hand to cut out the forward pass.
HALF CHANCE! Cuadrado takes aim from distance, with the ball spinning through to Falcao. The Colombian couldn't get it under control, though, and Stones makes the intervention.
The movement from Alli, Lingard and Sterling around the attacking third of the pitch in the early stages of this game has been excellent. They're all swapping and changing constantly. So difficult to mark.
Pickford is th youngest goalkeeper England have ever taken to a major tournament. Some predicted that the Everton man might struggle, but he has been solid up until now. Probably jinxed him now.
Quintero was looking for the run of Falcao from deep, with the ball played over the top for the Monaco striker to chase, but it bounces through to Pickford. No problem for England there.
For the first time in the match, England are now sitting back and inviting some pressure on top of themselves as Colombia knock the ball around. Very strong start by England.
KANE... ROOF OF THE NET! Great movement from Lingard and England opens up space for Trippier to get the cross to the back post, but Kane couldn't quite direct his header on target and it loops on to the roof of the net.
Some had suggested that Rose might start over Young at left back having played the game against Belgium, but Southgate clearly values the set piece deliveries from the latter.
Southgate must be pleased with how his team have started this game. Colombia are being reduced to playing on the counter attack. It's England who look the better side right now.
STERLING SHOT! The ball fell at the feet of Sterling on the edge of the box. He turns and takes a shot, but Mina charged it down to make the block. England are on the front foot.
England have looked sharp when they have the ball. They are dominating the possession, but Colombia carry some real threat when they get numbers forward on the break.
Colombia might be without James this evening, but Quintero has been their main man through the middle at this World Cup. A standout star of the tournament. Loves to pick a pass.
Lingard was free there! The Manchester United attacker had made a good run through the middle and Sterling tried to flick the ball to him, but it was just cut out by the defender.
Very good pace to this game in the early stages. First, it was Sterling who got in behind, with Mina making the challenge. Then Colombia come forward on the counter through Arias, of all people!
Good little spell for England. Of course, set pieces will be key for them this evening, as they have been for the whole tournament up until this point. Ospina has dealt well with the crosses so far.
YOUNG FREEKICK! Sterling won a freekick down the left side. Young took the set piece. There were plenty in the box waiting for the cross, but Ospina has to punch clear the shot.
Both sides have had a good period with the ball in the opening five minutes. Colombia started better and then England found a way out on the counter attack. Nothing of any note yet, though.
Because of the way the draw has opened up this feels like the most important game England have played at a major tournament for a long, long time. What a chance this is for them.
The England fans are heavily outnumbered by the Colombian fans in the Spartak Stadium in Moscow. About 80% of the crowd are in yellow, booing England when they have the ball.
So here we go. This will be a real gauge of where this England team is at the moment. Are they genuine contenders for this World Cup? Or are they still the England of old? We'll find out.
- 1st Half
The match is under way in Moscow! It's Colombia against England in the World Cup round of 16!
Southgate has stuck with the team that he picked for the opening group game against Tunisia. England played quite well in that match even if they needed a stoppage time winner.
England's recent record in knockout games of major tournaments isn't good. This will be a real test for this group of players. Colombia are a good side and they will put up a fight.
There was some doubt over the fitness of Alli, but the Spurs man is back in the side for this game. England could do with him finding his score touch this evening. Sterling too.
Of course, as you'll have heard, this side of the World Cup draw has opened up for both of these sides. A quarter final against Sweden awaits for the winner of this round of 16 tie.
For England, there are a few selections to focus on. Young has kept his place at left back, with Henderson picked to play in midfield and Alli back in the lineup after missing the Panama game through injury.
The big team news for Colombia is that James is missing. The Real Madrid playmaker, who spent last season on loan at Bayern Munich, picked up an injury in the last group game against Senegal.
