So that's the end of this fascinating, entertaining, topsy-turvy, shocking, surprising 2018 World Cup. It was certainly the right kind of showpiece, with terrific strikes, own goals, and some good old VAR controversy thrown in there for good measure. France were ultimately worthy winners today. It's been a great month - thank you for your company today, and over the past four weeks. See you next time.
Lots of tears all over the pitch, both of jubilation and disappointment. It's pouring with rain and Didier Deschamps is still having his suit soaked with a bottle of water squirted at him by his celebrating players, who then pick him up and throw him into the air.
The France squad run on to the pitch to celebrate, but of course don't forget their sporting responsibility to shake hands with their vanquished opponents.
FULL-TIME. France are WORLD CUP WINNERS!
This is still extremely end-to-end stuff, this, as you can probably tell.
The free kick is in towards Pogba, and he just doesn't seem to see it properly - does it take a touch from Vida's arm?
- Yellow cardŠime VrsaljkoCroatia
Vrsaljko takes Griezmann out, putting him over the proverbial Row Z.
Pogba is raging with himself for overthinking his counterattack down the right.
Five minutes to be added on here.
Brozovic concedes a free kick and then kicks the ball across the field. That's excellent thinking there, wasting time Croatia need to get two goals back.
Into the last minute now.
Rakitic has a very optimistic dig from range, but Lloris is always confident that's high and wide.
Croatia are packing the box now as they look for another two goals to take this into extra time.
Subisic claims that one, though, picking it up low. There have been questions over whether he's actually fit today after seemingly picking up a hamstring knock of some type in the semifinal.
Fakir is fouled by Rakitic, and he's looking a bit bemused. Free kick to France. They won't hurry to take this. It's wide on the right and Pogba is preparing to take it.
Rakitic takes an elaborate pratfall after the referee prevents him from taking a quick free kick. When he's finally permitted to whip it in, Lloris claims without challenge.
And Pjaca gets his first touch, running in towards the far post, but his first touch lets him down. Meanwhile, poor Strinic is limping his lonely way round the pitch.
- OffIvan StrinicCroatia
- OnMarko PjacaCroatia
And Strinic is replaced by Pjaca. A change apiece.
Fekir is coming on for Olivier Giroud.
Mbappe on the break again, and Croatia put a stop to it but can't break with the same speed they had earlier - that extra 90 minutes they've played throughout the tournament might be taking their toll.
The official stats now say that Croatia have had 14 shots on target to France's seven.
CLOSE! Rakitic gets his shot through a forest of France legs but wide of the post.
There are now scores of security people lining the perimeter of the pitch after thata earlier invasion.
Modric, bless him, is trying to launch an attack from the back and orchestrate it all himself.
Lovren slips on the touchline and concedes a throw to France.
Is that error on Lloris's mind? He looks reluctant to claim the ball now, and is tentative in the box.
Pogba, who's really grown into the game this second half, gives away a free kick in the midfield, and Croatia are ready to break.
Again, France are trying to slow it down and see the clock run its course.
- OffBlaise MatuidiFrance
- OnCorentin TolissoFrance
Matuidi is replaced by Tolisso.
- OffAnte RebicCroatia
- OnAndrej KramaricCroatia
Rebic is replaced by Kramaric.
That was simply bizarre!
- GoalMario MandzukicCroatia
GOAL! I was literally about to type about France's quiet control at the moment, and then Hugo Lloris fails to deal with a back pass, trying to nick it round Mandzukic and instead only finding the Croatian's right foot. It trickles into the net and that is not good for France.
All the records Mbappe is equalling or exceeding - the first teenager to score in a World Cup final since Pele in 1958, that's a pretty good one.
- GoalKylian MbappéFrance
GOAL! Lovely mazy run from Hernandez, and he passes the ball to Mbappe, who's been kept so quiet this afternoon. The teenager needs little encouragement to shoot from just outside the D - and he gets the ball into the bottom corner, and again the goalkeeper is left to watch the ball fly past his right hand.
There are some very firm challenges flying in now, and the referee is reticent to whistle, which is a sharp contrast to his decision-making in the first half.
CHANCE! Giroud, completely unsighted, tries an overhead kick to cross the ball to Griezmann, and Brozovic gets that out for a corner.
Subisic is left completely wrong-footed, he was about to move to save that first, blocked effort.
- GoalPaul PogbaFrance
GOAL! Mbappe goes on a mazy run into the box, Griezmann is there to help him out, Pogba has a shot which is deflected right back at his feet, and his second attempt leaves the net rippling, a fiery left-footed effort.
Lovren is fouled by Giroud, gets the free kick, and seems very irritated that he didn't also get the booking for the Frenchman.
France need to keep their foot on the ball and slow it down, but there's an element of panic, it seems, under the pressure from Croatia chasing the game, and they keep losing possession.
France counter again and it's Vida who is ready to put a stop to that. France throw near the halfway line.
Brozovic just played a ridiculous cross-field ball towards Strinic, who really had to run to get anywhere near it, but he got there and now Croatia are on the attack once more.
- OffN'Golo KantéFrance
- OnSteven N'ZonziFrance
Kante - who's on that first-half booking - is replaced by Nzonzi.
We get under way again and Mandzukic and Lloris both go for the same ball, with the goalkeeper coming off rather the worse. Goal kick.
Oh. We've got a pitch invasion by a few folk. They are going to be assisted away and out of the stadium.
Mbappe goes down the right wing at amazing speed, and Giroud is ready to pounce, but the young man decides to have a shot of his own which is quickly smothered.
Croatia have really come out with ridiculous energy after the break, and they're just putting their foot on it a bit now to slow down that frantic pace.
Griezmann lumps that clear, and Vrsaljko is lurking on the edge of the box to have a very optimistic shot.
Matuidi shields the ball away for a corner, and Modric is ready to take yet another one.
Varane takes a smart touch of the ball away from Perisic, and Lloris is quick out of his box to sweep up.
Slightly deeper corner from Modric, and it falls once again to Rebic, who stabs it out for a goal kick.
CLOSE! Rebic sneaks in round the back, hits it first time, and it's a tremendous finger-tip save by Lloris.
The players are back on the field - ready for another 45 minutes?
Incidentally, that opening France goal might have got a touch off Mandzukic, but it was surely going directly into the net without his assistance. Maybe someone can take a look at that during half-time.
HALF-TIME. France 2-1 Croatia. Well, what an incident-packed first half. An own goal, an equaliser, a lengthy spot of VAR, and then that penalty to put France ahead once more. Can they hold on for another 45 minutes? What's your prediction?
Modric is fouled once again - he's really taking some punishment today, and it's another free kick. It's swung in towards Perisic who just doesn't get that final touch, and has to chase it down, committing a foul of his own in response.
A long ball forward from Mandzukic, and Rebic isn't quick enough off the mark.
Another corner, taken by Rakitic, and Vida can't connect properly.
Umtiti gets some treatment and is helped off the field of play.
Umtiti is a crumpled heap in the middle of the box and play is continuing around him.
This one bobbles about until Pogba and Giroud combine their efforts to clear.
Rakitic takes the corner, which is deflected out for another.
Pogba blocks Lovren's shot, and it's out for a corner as a thunderstorm begins to make itself known around the stadium.
Umtiti pushes Mandzukic to the ground, and it's another free kick to Croatia, who push all their players forward.
Mbappe is trying to use his pace but is out-thought here by Vida, who ushers the ball away from him.
- Yellow cardLucas HernándezFrance
Too much to keep up with! A booking for Hernandez, who looks disgusted with the decision, but that was a sliding challenge from behind.
Croatia are all set to counter again, and are quick off the mark to regroup.
So France edge ahead once more - can Croatia level up again?
- Goal by penaltyAntoine GriezmannFrance
GOAL! What a calm penalty from Griezmann, sanguinely stroking that low to the keeper's right.
Oh, my goodness. I suppose it's right that the World Cup Final should have a VAR-assisted penalty.
IT'S A PENALTY TO FRANCE!
The referee watched it, started to walk back on the field - and went back and watched it again.
The players are using the break in play to have a bit of hydration.
It's an accidental touch by Perisic, it looks like - but the referee has been called over to the area of Official Review.
It's a corner to France, taken by Griezmann, and the France team are calling for handball. Time for VAR, methinks.
Strinic is making a dangerous-looking run on the left towards the back post, but Rebic can't deliver the final ball from the other flank, and that's gratefully gathered by Lloris.
Brozovic and Rakitic combine to burst through the centre but no final ball transpires. Things are all square and looking fascinatingly poised.
Mbappe is being kept very quiet so far this afternoon - and he's muted once again as the assistant referee lifts his flag against him.
- GoalIvan PerišicCroatia
GOAL! Modric takes the free kick, getting it in towards the back stick, and after four headers bouncing across the face of goal, Perisic just smashes it home from the edge of the box, assisted by a tiny deflection.
- Yellow cardN'Golo KantéFrance
Kante brings down Perisic - and gets the first yellow card of the final. It's another Croatia free kick, about 30 or so yards out, and central.
Griezmann spread it out to Pavard on the right, but he can't then link up with Mbappe, and Croatia break.
France are starting to assert themselves a little bit more in the middle of the park now, and beginning to level things up in terms of possession, revitalised by that goal. Brozovic muscles in to break things up.
It's punched away by Lloris, not as decisive as one might wish. There's all sorts of pushing and bodychecking going on in the box, and everybody thinks they deserve a free kick. Eventually Lloris gets the chance to get it away with a goal kick.
Pavard brings Rebic down on the left - it's a foul but also a dramatic landing. Croatia fans pump up the volume again ready for this free kick on the left, again to be taken by Modric.
Giroud thinks he's on the break, but the referee is again quick with the whistle - nobody seems quite sure why.
CLOSE! Modric is fouled on the right, and swings in the free kick himself towards the head of Vida. The ball bounces off his skull and over the bar.
GOAL! Griezmann gets the ball swung in, and it takes a brush off the head of someone in there - maybe Mandzukic?
Free kick to France as Griezmann is upended by Brozovic in the centre of the park - contact is minimal but the referee is decisive.
The first glimpse of Mbappe as he takes possession in the Croatia box but his attempted cut-back is a messy one. France need to get him on the ball more.
An incident off the ball as Ante Rebic goes to ground after a collision with Theo Hernandez. Not much in it, as the replay shows. As an aside: remember when they used VAR at this tournament? It seems to have been abandoned for the knockouts.
Another big chance for Croatia. Perisic is causing havoc so far and again he gets away from Benjamin Pavard at right-back. He rolls a low pass into the4 box but can't find Mandzukic.
France fans have been muted in these early exchanges but have just upped the volume, urging on their team.
France have seen no joy in the final third so far. Griezmann has barely featured and Kylian Mbappe hasn't had a chance to engage that top gear of his.
Again, France come under pressure and this time it's a lofted pass into the box. Again, Croatia can't carve out a proper shot on goal.
Croatia work the ball to Ivan Perisic on the edge of the box and from there he turns the ball along the floor - but France clear. Still, it's been a bright start from Croatia.
Sorry, some technical problems for you there - not ideal timing. Anyway, we are back with the action in Moscow. It's been a pretty cagey start so far. Croatia made some early inroads but didn't get much joy in the final third.
The teams are in!
