Well, this was a bit of a reality check for Russia. They will likely face Spain in the last 16, while Uruguay, who have won their first three games at a World Cup for the first time, will probably come up against Portugal. This was a statement win for the South Americans. They were great. Russia, not so much.

- End of 2nd Half
FULL TIME: Uruguay 3-0 Russia
- OffEdinson CavaniUruguay
- OnMaximiliano GómezUruguay
A late change for Uruguay, with Cavani coming off to be replaced by Gomez.
Four minutes of stoppage time to be played at the end of the match.
- GoalEdinson CavaniUruguay
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Uruguay 3 (90 mins - Edinson Cavani) Russia 0. There's the goal Cavani has been desperate for all afternoon! Akinfeev makes the save to prevent a header Godin finding the net, but Cavani was on hand to bundle home the rebound. Three goals to the good.
Russia have really lacked a final product to their play this afternoon. They have looked dangerous at times, but the last pass or cross has been dreadful. They must improve on that.
AKINFEEV TIPPED AWAY! It appeared that the Russian goalkeeper was going to get caught out with an in-swinging corner kick over his head, but he manages to tip it away.
CAVANI... DEFLECTION! It looked like the Uruguay striker was going to get his goal, there. But he took too long to get the shot away and the effort was deflected behind for a corner.
MUSLERA SAVE! Smolov beat his man at the byline, had time to get his head up and look for teammates in the middle, but in the end the cross is gathered on the dive by Muslera.
Russia have pretty much checked out of this game. They will have to put this performance behind them before the last 16. They have been so careless with some of their play.
CACERES CHANCE! Another opportunity for Uruguay, who have ramped things up in the last few minutes. Caceres was free from a corner kick, but he completely misses his header.
AKINFEEV SAVE! That could have been another for Uruguay. Suarez takes the shot from distance, but the Russian goalkeeper is behind the effort and makes the punching save.
The views of an Arsenal fan...
JUST TOO FAR! Suarez was desperate for his strike partner to get a goal there. He could have taken the shot on himself, but sought to set up Cavani, with the pass too strong.
For the first time, some whistles from the home fans towards their own team after a pretty pitiful throw in that gifted the ball straight back to Uruguay. Until now the support has been great.
Torreira looks to have taken a knock. That will be of concern to Tabarez and Uruguay. The Sampdoria midfielder has made a real impact since coming off the bench in the last game.
Although it should be noted that this result was always likely to be warped by the fact that both teams were already through to the round of 16 before the match had even started.
Russia will want to forget this match and move on to the next game, which wil likely be against Spain in the last 16 of this World Cup. They need to come up with a better game plan.
A CHANCE WASTED! Uruguay give the ball away cheaply inside their own half, but Dzyuba sends his left-footed strike well wide of the target after cutting inside. Oh dear. Russia needed that.
- OffNahitán NándezUruguay
- OnCristian RodríguezUruguay
A change for Uruguay and Rodriguez comes on for the South Americans.
Dzyuba has gone down inside the penalty area after a clash with a Uruguay defender. He is implying that there was an elbow in there, but the referee isn't falling for it. Neither is VAR.
This has been the perfect game for Uruguay in this second half. They have taken their foot off the gas and have focused on keeping their shape and holding Russia at arm's length.
CAVANI WELL WIDE! The PSG striker creates the shooting opportunity for himself on the edge of the box, but in the end he slices his effort well wide of the Russian goal.
You have to question the Russian approach of slinging cross after cross into the Uruguay penalty area. Even if the deliveries were good, they have Godin in there.
Why didn't Cavani just turn and take the shot with that last opportunity? Instead, he threw out a leg in the hope that he would be caught and that a penalty would be awarded.
PENALTY CALL! Cavani was played through by Suarez, he turned and falls to the ground after a challenge from Ignashevich, but the referee waves away the claim. Correct call.
Bentancur has been shown a yellow card. Not sure what that was for. Must have been pulled back for something.
This is much better from Russia in this second half. The energy has returned to their play, but time and time again they have been let down by their final ball. That's what is lacking.
- OffAleksey MiranchukRussia
- OnFedor SmolovRussia
Russia make a change as they look for a way back into this game.
Just for a moment, it looked loike Fernandes had opened up the space for a shot on goal from the edge of the box, but he played one pass too many out wide and the chance broke down.
The final ball from Russia has been lacking all game. They have worked their way into dangerous positions, but the cross or pass through has been a disappointment every time.
Cavani looks a frustrated figure. The Paris Saint-Germain striker hasn't enjoyed the best of World Cups so far. His scoring record for Uruguay is very good, but he is struggling here.
Having said that, one goal would change the dynamic of this match. There is a great spirit to this Russia team and a foothold in the game could give them a chance of a comeback.
One wonders if Russia might take their foot off the gas in this second half. As in, might they just sit back and absorb pressure rather than chasing the game? They look beaten.
No changes made by either side, but Uruguay already have a freekick in a dangerous position. Cavani strikes the set piece right into the Russian wall. He'll be disappointed with that.
- 2nd Half
The second half is under way in Samara! Uruguay are 2-0 up against 10-man Russia.
What did you make of the first half in Samara? Have Russia lost this already, down to 10 men and two goals behind? How many can Uruguay rack up here? Tweet me!
- End of 1st Half
HALF TIME: Uruguay 2-0 Russia. The South Americans deserve to be ahead against the hosts who have shot themselves in the foot more than once over the course of 45 minutes.
The thing about this Uruguay performance is that while they have played well in this first half, they still haven't managed to get the best out of Cavani and Suarez. Capable of so much more.
In the other game in this group, the oldest player in World Cup history has just saved a penalty.
Russia need to get into the dressing room at half time and come up with a new game plan. Although this might already be about damage limitation for the host nation.
Uruguay are now taking the chance to knock the ball around the midfield, taking a break. It's understandable. They are well on top and in all likelihood have the points in the bag here.
- OffDenis CheryshevRussia
- OnMário FernandesRussia
Russia make a change after the sending off, with Fernandes coming on. Cheryshev is the one coming off, though. Which is strange.
That was madness from Smolnikov. He didn't need to make that tackle in that area of the pitch. It was a really bad challenge. Completely deserving of a second yellow card.
Well, this is already looking like a write off of an afternoon for Russia. They are two goals down and now they will have to play 60 minutes of this match with only 10 men.
- Red cardIgor SmolnikovRussia
SENT OFF! It goes from bad to worse for Russia. Smolnikov is shown a second yellow card for a very late tackle on Laxalt.
Torreira has made quite the impression for Uruguay in this first half. The Sampdoria midfielder has been linked with a move to Arsenal in recent weeks. On this showing, that would be a good signing.
Can Russia find a way back into this game before the break? They have worked their way into dangerous positions in this first half, but they look so vulnerable at the back.
This has been so much more expansive from Uruguay. They registered narrow 1-0 wins in their first two group games, but they could have had three or four in this first half so far.
SUAREZ WAS THROUGH! A long ball from deep releases Suarez through on the Russian goal, but Ignashevich does really well to get back and make the last-gasp tackle.
GREAT CHANCE FOR URUGUAY! That probably should have been a third goal for the South Americans. Akinfeev makes the save from Bentacur and Cavani was robbed of the rebound.
- Yellow cardIgor SmolnikovRussia
Cavani is clattered into and Smolnikov and is shown a yellow card.
Russia have actually played quite well in the opening 25 minutes of this match, but Uruguay have made the most of their chances. Russia need to be better from set pieces.
In the other game being played in this group right now, Salah has given Egypt the lead over Saudi Arabia. Of course, that doesn't have any real effect on the outlook of the standings.
- Own-goalDenis CheryshevRussia
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Uruguay 2 (23 mins - Diego Laxalt) Russia 0. Uruguay have scored a second! A corner kick was half-cleared to the edge of the box, but Laxalt was on hand to send a shot towards the goal. His strike picked up a huge deflection, completely wrong-footing Akinfeev. Russia have it all to do.
However, there have been questions posed of the Russian team. They have covered more ground than any other side at this World Cup, and by some distance. Some have questioned that given the country's recent history of doping in sport.
You have to admire the tenacity with which Russia chase the ball when they are out of possession. They are right on top of Uruguay as soon as they lose it. No time for them to settle.
HEADER OVER! Dzyuba gets on the end of a corner kick and heads towards goal. But he directs his effort down into the ground and the ball bounces over the Uruguay crossbar.
Cheryshev is once again the main man for the Russians. The Villarreal winger has been in great form over the past two games and has started well once again this afternoon.
It will be interesting to see if Uruguay now try to suffocate this game as they normally do. Or whether, with their last 16 fate secure, they will attempt to be slightly more expansive.
Fair play to Russia, they have responded well since losing that opening goal. They are flooding forward on the attack whenever they get the ball past the halfway line. Very open game.
This might be something of a dead rubber, with both teams already qualified for the last 16, but this match is being played with a great intensity and tempo. Entertaining stuff so far.
BIG CHANCE! That might have been a Russian equaliser. Cheryshev sends a half-volley towards goal from the edge of the box, but it's straight at Muslera, who makes the save.
Suarez's freekick was a good one, but the wall didn't seem to be in the right position. There was far too much space for he Uruguay striker to get his shot on target from the edge of the box.
- GoalLuis SuárezUruguay
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Uruguay 1 (10 mins - Luis Suarez) Russia 0. Uruguay have taken an early lead and it's Suarez! The Barcelona striker sends a low freekick around the Russian wall and finds the far corner of the net. Akinfeev couldn't get a hand to it and Suarez has his second goal of the World Cup.
- Yellow cardYury GazinskyRussia
Bentacur is brought down right on the edge of the box and Gazinsky is booked.
One of the factors in this game is the heat. It's very, very hot in Samara. Will that have an effect on the performance of these two teams? Even in the shade, it is blistering according to those there.
Uruguay have one of the best frontlines in the World Cup, with Cavani and Suarez leading the line, but so far they haven't been allowed to express themselves. Will that change here?
Russia are now just getting a feel for the ball after a strong start to the match by Uruguay. The home fans inside the stadium in Samara are making a right din. Very, very loud.
NOT FAR WIDE! Torreira gets a shot away on goal, but Akinfeev is fairly comfortable in watching that strike flash wide of the target. Good try from the Arsenal transfer target.
Here's a stat for you - Uruguay are known for their defensive, physical style of play. But they are the only team at this World Cup to have picked up a single yellow card so far.
- 1st Half
The match is under way in Samara! It's Uruguay against Russia in Group A of the 2018 World Cup.
The atmosphere in Samara looks great. Thousands upon thousands of Russian fans have turned up for this one. There's a healthy contingent of Uruguay supporters as well.
Just to recap - Russia scored five in their first game against Saudi Arabia and then three against Egypt last week. They look on fire in the attacking third. But Uruguay are strong defensively.
Russia have been the surprise package of this World Cup so far. Cheryshev has been the star man for the hosts and the former Real Madrid winger will be hoping to add to his tally here.
Gimenez has suffered an injury and so he has been left out of the Uruguay side for this game. Tabarez has shifted to a back three to compensate for the absence of the Atletico Madrid man.
Cavani and Suarez are both starting up front for Uruguay. Russia have impressed at this World Cup, but this will present them with a test they haven't faced at this tournament so far.
There are a few changes for both teams ahead of this final group game. Of course, both Uruguay and Russia are already qualified for the last 16, but they'll want to keep momentum going.
